2018-2019 Hackensack-Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha tru. Have you heard anything since the acceptance confirmation?
Nope. It’s making me nervous lol. I feel like everyone in the admissions office takes 6 hour lunch breaks or only works 2 hrs a day. No one is ever available to pick up phones or answer emails. Have you heard anything?

Yes that’s concerning to me as well. Haven’t heard a single thing regarding second visit, etc. This is unfortunate because this is my only acceptance so far. What does this say about the program?

Probably under staffed.

Understaffed or making things up as they go. They mentioned that there would be a second look on interivew day but no one had any idea when

Hi everyone, I just received and accepted an interview offer today. To those of you who have interviewed, do you think you could describe the process for me? I have only interviewed at osteopathic schools so far, this will be my first allopathic interview. Thank you in advance!

You’ll walk into the building a little before 10. They’ll lead you to a room to chill and watch a video. Someone will come pick you up and take you for an info session and feed you delicious brownies and cookies. You’ll be introduced to the deans and they’ll have a presentation. Then there’ll be lunch and a student affairs presentation. Then you’ll go interview with 2 people for 30 min each (I forget the exact time). Then you’ll be brought back to the room you were in earlier where you’ll finally get to down the rest of those brownies and cookies while listening to a financial aid presentation. After that is the tour and then you’re done!

I haven't heard anything either. I feel like they're waiting until they make final decisions on everyone to give us more information. I've had luck reaching them at the end of the day, around 4:30-4:45.

Thank you for the information! Were the questions personal like osteopathic interviews or were they more critical thinking based?

It really depends on who you get. Overall they’re more personal but one of my interviewers was better at it than the other. With one, I think we spent a good portion of the interview talking about his wife and the weather 😛.

There probably aren’t many ethical question based ones

Minimal-non existent

I’m sure it’ll be better this time around. Last year they had 3 months to seat a class at the end of the cycle so the ones who got in likely didn’t have other options

Makes sense!

This may be more comprehensive than anything I've seen because I know they presented the list of sites and list of programs separately. But here its combined in a better way

Basically it works like this:

You can find the current offerings here.

HMH Residencies - Seton Hall University

There will be another psych residency opening.
Another EM residency opening.
Another cardiovascular and GI fellowship at HUMC.
The pulm program at Jersey shore is moving to pulm/crit.
There is an integrated vascular surgery program opening.
There is a vascular fellowship opening soon within the network.
The surgery program at HUMC has already received ACGME accreditation and is recruiting for this year's class.

The ortho program that is listed on that webpage is not available.

On interview day they told us that they had all of them/plans for all of them but optho. Any idea about ENT, Neurosurg, radiology, IR, rad onc, Pathology, Child Neurology?

This is a solid list though

I'm surprised that they don't have an ortho program yet. Is that in the works?

There is an ortho program in the works at HUMC.probably will open for your cohort.

Neurosurgery is unique in that it requires a radiology residency to already be in-place. NSG is a strategic interest for the network so I assume those programs will try and get opening as soon as possible. However nsg is a particularly hard program to open because it requires a lot of effort. unclear whether it will be available for your cohort.

IR unclear
Rad onc, maybe in the future but doubtful anytime soon.
child neuro, maybe. but you could match that anywhere with a passing step 1 score.
patho, havent asked specifically
ENT, havent asked specifically. At this point I doubt it anytime soon.

.

Hopefully it'll be open by the time my year graduates. Is there a reason why NSG is so tied to rads compared to other residencies? I would've thought that would be one of the first ones to be opened since the hospital system is known for their neurosurg dept

I was not aware that the hospital was known for neurosurgery. But nonetheless, the nsg at HUMC is supplied by a large private group. In order to run a residency they will have to agree to teach residents, take on extra responsibility, and accept a significant pay cut.

So in the end it is not a simple task

If one was to do a 4th year, you could be considered for out of HMH network residencies correct?

A little upsetting no radiology residency in place.

Anything with oncology?

BTW thank you all for the quick answer to my question!

Ah that makes sense. I'm surprised that NSG is contracted out in a hospital network as big as hackensacks

Anyone accepted get an email about the certiphi background check? Just trying to gage if it's from them, or another school. Thanks!

I just got an interview invite here and had a few questions for people have already gone to the interview! What are the interviews like? Some people from last cycle said one of the two was conversational and the other was more of a proper interview. How many people interview during each day? Does anyone know if there are still spots available for the coming summer or are they interviewing for the waitlist? Thanks in advance!

There was a post earlier on what to expect. No need to scroll too far.

Personally, my first interview was more of a traditional interview with questions along the lines of "why medicine?" "Why Seton Hall?" etc. My second interview was much more informal and it was a great conversation about life in general and certain aspects of life as a physician. We laughed and joked around. It probably depends on your interviewer, but both of mine were extremely nice and easy to talk to.
