2018-2019 TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Submitted my primary this morning! OOS but hoping to get some love!

Same, OOS but I feel like I fit this school's mission. I know there are tons of qualified TX applicants, but hopefully we have a good chance.

Good luck to everyone applying! Sent mine in earlier this morning as well. As a native fort worthian, cant wait to see this school enhance the community.

On the website it says that a C- in prerequisite classes is not accepted. I do not see Chemistry listed as a prerequisite. Would a C- in chemistry prevent me from matriculating?

Biochemistry is the chem topic required and this must be a C/C+ or better.

Gen Chem and O-Chem (and any other Chem related courses) are not specific requirements and therefore, the C/C+ rule does not apply.

@SOM Admissions Do you anticipate that this school will be receptive to non-trads? I know that TX tends to be on the younger side in terms of med school admissions, so was curious about how non-trad candidates might be viewed

Non-traditional means something different to each person, so I will share that our admission philosophy and mission
celebrates the differences in applicants’ personal stories and paths traveled to medicine, and commit to a comprehensive and holistic admissions approach that gives balanced and equal consideration of non-academic and academic factors, as well as the school-specific personal attributes required to be successful as a self-directed adult learner in the unique curriculum of training empathetic scholars. To this end, it is impossible to list the exact ‘recipe’ for admission. However, there are key areas that each applicant should be focused when preparing a competitive application. We believe these areas can be demonstrated throughout the application process in various ways, and encourage applicants to explore these
successful medical school applicant stories
for examples.

@SOM Admissions
Hello, I would be graduating this Fall and was wondering if I would be able to fulfill the Physiology course requirement at a community college? Physiology is not required by my major, nor is it required at other medical schools, so I never thought to take it.
Thank you!

How do you suggest adding work/activities to our application? Will we have a chance to do that on our secondary app? (I have been scribing since I completed my application and would really like to elaborate on my experiences!)

So long as it is completed by an accredited college with a grade of C/C+ or higher and is reflected on a transcript by June 1, 2019.

The secondary will give you several opportunities to draw from these experiences to demonstrate core competency in several areas.

It's official - we are live on AMCAS!

Our office will begin reviewing applications and anticipate, at the earliest, inviting those who meet the minimum thresholds as stated on our website to complete the secondary application later in the week. Even then, we will be conservative in our invitations for the first few days or so to ensure our technology is working to avoid any disruptions for applicants that only cause concern.

Reminders: your secondary application should be approached as if we are sitting across the table from one another. Be genuine, authentic, real and embrace our innovations to identify a future Empathetic Scholar. We are doing something different in Fort Worth, Texas from application through graduation!

Super excited to apply to this school! How does this school view OOS applicants? How large does the initial class expect to be and what is the anticipated breakdown between in state vs OOS?

I applied yesterday morning and AMCAS verified my transcripts yesterday afternoon. So good timing on my part I suppose.

Hopefully getting in early in their cycle helps. I feel I missed on a lot of opportunities in the rest of the state by submitting so late (9/1).

I'm curious as to how the late application availability here affects their student selection. Are those applying competing against a smaller pool of applicants since it's so late? 60 out of 3000 total applicants vs 60 out of 9000. Still slim.

Has anyone received an official "application received" email from TCU/UNTHSC?

UPDATE: We are beginning to process applications and due to the very high volume of applications received in the first 24-hours, it is likely to take the week to send the first communication. We kindly ask that you give us this week without fearing your application was not received. If you added us to your AMCAS, we got it. Data comes in every 15-minutes or so. We appreciate your patience.

Thanks for being so forthcoming with updates here!

Does the physiology class have to be upper division? Physiology was covered in one of my introductory bio classes, as indicated in the course title, and was both human and plant physiology. Would this be okay or would I have to take physiology at a local CC? Thanks!

I'm curious about how many secondary essays there might be this year....Would appreciate if you could elaborate. Thank you 🙂

@SOM Admissions I know you said bio 1 and 2 do not count for genetics. But my bio 2 was very much focused on genetics. If possible, can this still be considered if the syllabus outlines us learning a great deal about it?

We would have to review a course syllabus - you are more than welcomed to send it our way to [email protected].

Does not have to be an upper division course, per se. Compare your intro bio course syllabus to the components listed on our website to better determine if your course meets the requirement - https://mdschool.tcu.edu/admissions/how-to-prepare-a-competitive-application/

@SOM Admissions I just want to say I'm incredibly excited to see your school opening up applications this cycle! I've had my eye on your progress since visiting Fort Worth this summer on a business trip from Austin to initiate a clinical trial at Texas Health Harris Methodist. The growth going on in Fort Worth and the development of this school is incredibly exciting. I'm looking forward to the secondary application (and of course, hopefully interviewing here!) 🙂

I understand your team is in the midst of receiving a massive influx of applications and will be hard at work processing each of them, but does your team have a rough idea of when your Interview Invitations will begin being sent out, and when the interviews will occur? (I.e.: December - March, how many interviews are anticipated to be offered, etc.)?

Also, thank you for being so engaging with interested prospective students here on SDN! We all have our neuroses, so it's nice to see someone from your school making a conscious effort to answer questions you're being bombarded with!

Cheers!

Thanks for the note and for keeping up with us.

Interviews will occur from January - April, always on a Monday and we will host 13 interview days, interviewing around 300 students. We anticipate invitations to begin going out mid-December, at the latest.

You'll have about 6-7 experiences within our supplemental application.

Thank you for letting me know! Also, will TCU SOM be holding an open houses for prospective students in general or is it possible to visit the campus? I am coming to the Forth Worth area soon and would love to check it out 🙂

We held an Applicant Information Day last Saturday and are looking at hosting another one based on demand for an afternoon in December. We are just moving into a new shared space and are not hosting tours at this point.

in general med schools do not run campus visits in the way colleges do.

Thank you for letting me know. I guess I will just come by and visit the general TCU/UNT campus area then when I'm in Fort Worth!

Very helpful. Thank you!

awesome, do you mind posting the essay prompts?

I can't - they are all timed and confidential! There is 2 questionnaire's, an audio response essays (yes multiple), and a written essay.

EDIT: Timed meaning I can't access the questions until I am ready to respond and there is a time limit.

I mean they are TIMED too. Sorry. They are timed AND I can't see them until I'm ready to respond. Which I'm not right now. At all.

P.S. Make sure you have a good microphone for the audio questions. It will allow you to test your mic before you begin.

Mission-fit Essays
The following section consists of written and verbal responses to five different questions, none of which require medical knowledge, but rather focus on core personal attributes that you can demonstrate competency through real-life examples from your background and experiences. Each prompt is considered confidential and should not be either shared with others or input sought from others.

The entire 5-question section is timed and secure, therefore make sure you are in a quiet place, have approximately 45-minutes of uninterrupted time and a strong internet connection. You will also need access to a microphone during this section. While you are permitted take a break in between the five questions, you cannot pause, restart or re-submit during a question.

This is quite interesting. Well, I suppose this means no one should share the prompts on here. So, don't scuttle your application by sharing the prompts!

edit: I mean if someone wants to fall on the grenade…

..jk!
