2018-2019 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am just sitting here reading my II email over and over. I applied to 46 schools and have 20+ Rejection/Holds with two IIs from two schools that are nowhere near as high as UCLA rank wise(I am still glad I received the IIs). I never dreamed of actually getting an II from here. I thought that my stats are absolute trash(LM68) and that the schools either don't like my reasons or won't bother to read my explanations. I am speechless and don't even know how to prepare for this interview. Even just looking at the google map of UCLA induces intense sweaty hands.

Hi all! Long time reader, first time poster. I got a II today (IS, ORM, LM 75, secondary received 8/24, complete 9/4). Thanks to all of the MS’s who have offered to answer questions and provide support through the process! My question for MS students is: what advice do you have for preparing for the interview? UCLA is one of my top choices and I want to do as well as I can in the interview to increase my chances of getting accepted here. Thanks!

There's nothing you have to do to prep. Though I am always impressed whenever an interviewee knows the Georgetown mantra and which of the four apply to a situation.

Is faculty interview open or closed interview? Do they have access to our primary, secondary, and LOTRs before/during the interview?
Thank you!

Not sure Dean Hall would want us to say much on that since it is subject to change at any time. You'll hear from him on interview day about this. But honestly I never understood why people fixated on that minor point; the difference between MMI vs traditional yes, but closed vs open has no significant difference, as I think almost everyone who has interviewed will agree with me. Everything is still fair game, except that in open they can skip the "tell me about your hobbies" question, and jump straight to the "tell me about this glass blowing hobby of yours."

Does UCLA first give interviews to mostly IS applicants and then OOS applicants later?

I would agree with this for the most part, but add that if you've never seen an MMI I would recommend looking that over first and some of the ways to approach MMIs. And, of course, know your application (be ready to talk about that freshman research experience that you never touched again or that glass-blowing hobby haha).

does UCLA allow updates pre interview invite?
I remember this being a no? but could be wrong

To other MSTP applicants without a secondary - do you think it's safe to assume we have R's in waiting?
my dude, it is so early in the application cycle!!! don't despair yet!!

II for the MD program just now. Complete a little after mid-August. Absolutely thrilled to be visiting California!!

Edit: I'm confused about the part of the email that says: "You will also be asked to upload a photo. We ask that you upload a professional photo in business attire within the guidelines described." but there are no guidelines described?

What do I do if I still haven't received a secondary?

Does UCLA silent reject or do they tell you?
EDIT: reject post secondary*

I got a rejection from here before even receiving a secondary. Do you know how they pre screen before sending secondaries out? Really sad as it was my dream school.

Sorry to hear that. If you don't mind me asking, when did you send your AMCAS to them? I am waiting for a possible secondary app from them and trying to figure out if they're still sending out secondaries.

UCLA performs a holistic pre-secondary screen, so it's not just a number screen. I asked an admission staff about it, and she said they look at your numbers and "maybe" other parts on your AMCAS such as PS and ECs to decide whether an applicant gets a secondary or not.

I submitted it late July around 25th-30th

When complete? 🙁
Sorry! I was trying to clarify if they rejected post secondary or leave you in limbo. I haven’t been rejected. Sorry for the confusion. I was complete 7/21 though

Call and ask - it's probably the size of the photo or pixels or something easy. You could go to a passport photo place like a UPS store or Kinkos and get a photo there. Wear a suit&tie for men and a blazer/business dress for women. What they don't want is probably that cropped family vacation photo or one from dinner out with your friends.

Dumb question but do we email the admissions office to request a student host? And is it bad if we can't make any of the dates currently available in the calendar due to work obligations (trying not to get fired for taking so much time off so soon) and would like to request a later interview date?

Anybody still waiting on a secondary?

Yeah I am, but at this point I have kinda lost hope.. October is around the corner, interviews are well underway. I don't foresee a secondary from here, but am also confused as to why they haven't sent a rejection letter? It seems like others have been rejected already?

My year (before the admissions process had been upgraded to its current state, and we were assigned a single date) I was able to request a later date due to similar obligations, so it should be fine. I think the student host process is automatically offered, although the process may be different this year so one of the MS1/2s might be able to clarify this.

Has anyone submitted additional materials via the document upload tab in the secondary? If so, can you see on the page that you uploaded documents? I was going to include abstracts but I submitted my secondary a month ago and can't remember if I uploaded them at that time, and there's not a list of documents already uploaded. I've noticed with some schools that add'l documents are not always visible once you've uploaded them, but I don't want to risk sending the same documents a second time. Thanks in advance!

Yes you can see if you've uploaded! if there's nothing there then you've likely not submitted anything yet

Hey! just wondering if the "Application Complete" section of the app ever changes from "Your application is complete" to "Application is under review" - i submitted 8/11 and was wondering if there was a way to know if they've seen your app

Anyone who submitted secondary 7/30 or peior gotten an interview, rejection, or still waiting to hear back?

Is it worth emailing them about a secondary? I have literally gotten one from every other UC except this one...

I sent them an email about a week ago saying I applied in early July, they responded:

Thank you for your interest in our medical education program at DGSOM. Applications are received and reviewed by our Admissions Screening Committee with supplemental applications awarded on a competitive basis. We use a holistic review process which takes into account experiences, personal attributes and metrics. Currently, your application is under review.

We thank you for your continued interest and patience.

I would guess you might receive the same response but try and let us know.

I like how they put metrics last on the list, kind of implying that experiences is the most important thing they look at 🙂

Did anyone who has already interviewed respond to Dean Hall's requests for questions for DGSOM? I responded saying that I was interested to hear more about their primary care education and community service opportunities, but have yet to get a response.

does the application portal ever change from "application complete" to "application under review"? submitted 8/11 and nothing has changed since being marked complete

Hey I responded too a while back, and haven't received any replies! Hope that's comforting.

That is comforting haha. I'm okay that it's taking a while because hopefully that means they'll give us a decision sooner lol.

Anyone know if they gave out later-stage secondaries in the past? AMCAS Verified in Early-Mid July

Sorry to add to the neuroticism, but is it safe to say that if we haven't gotten a secondary yet, we wont ever be getting one? :/

edit: my AMCAS app was verified on the first day possible🙁
