2018-2019 Virginia Commonwealth University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Then you'll be excited to know that that'll start happening next month. After April 15, applicants can only hold onto 3 acceptances, and after April 30, only 1.

It'll be interesting to see how fast WL movement happens this year

Yea I feel like this year's waitlist process is gonna take a lot of schools by surprise. I think Dean Mission has also hypothesized (although hesitantly) previously on this thread that there could be more offers through the waitlist this year than years past

I'm rooting for all you guys/gals, hope ya'll get acceptances in the coming month or two!

Will out-of-state students qualify for in-state tuition after the first year? I've heard that it's difficult to successfully petition for in-state status for tuition, but N=1

Only if you can prove that you're living in VA for a reason besides just going to school there (spouse got a job in VA, etc.)

No, it's super hard. The easiest way to get IS tuition is to marry a VA resident
Yikes- I havent been accepted here yet, but this really throws a wrench in my plans. It would be very hard to justify paying OOS tuition for 4 years.... (the estimated cost of attendance from the paper they gave us in the folder on the interview day was very steep for OOS)

Do you know this from personal experience/known anecdotes or are you just guessing? Cause if that is true, that is potentially a game changer.
Someone at my interview was a VA resident and said you have to live in VA for like 3 years before you qualify or buy property/marry someone.

Just got an email about CASPer scores from Dean Baker... not sure if this is something everyone gets... anyone else receive this?

I interviewed in late January

Lol at my interview day, her and Dean Mission both made sure that every interviewee in the room had taken CASPer and sent in their results. I wonder if they are actually using it this year for admissions rather than simply gathering information for a cycle or two for potential future usage.

Or buy property so you could get a mortgage in theory and use loans to pay that instead of just renting.

It does suck that it's so hard to become a resident. The med students on my day told us that we should marry an IS med student to cash in on IS tuition lol. I'd imagine that's easier than getting a mortgage since most of us don't have a stable income or down payment

LOL, You have to wait 3 years to marry someone in VA?

So before the WL is formed they will offer some admissions on a rolling basis? *fingers crossed*
Yes because some people interviewed this week and I believe they said that those applicants still have a shot of getting a straight acceptance before the WL is formed but its based on if people drop their seats (so it sounds like they arent extending more acceptances right now and that they want to keep the accepted number the same so they will add people as others drop)

Any advice for the prep? Ive only done 1 other MMI that was rather non traditional so there was really 0 way to prep for that one.

There was a list of 100 practice MMI questions somewhere on google. That was fairly helpful in helping me get the timing and format of answers down. Outside of that there are some videos on youtube that can help with response formatting.

Already did my interview but thanks! I thought the interview was super laid back and hard to prep for cus it seemed like they were genuinely curious how you think. And everybody was sooooooo nice.

I just looked at my portal again and now it says " February 1st and March 16th" and I believe before it said February 1st and March 1st....anyone else's portals change?

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Mine changed too but didn’t know if I was just confused about it saying March 1 before.

Do they take letters of interest? I know updates are accepted but they have to be put in an email and no pdf
I spoke the other day to the admissions staff. If u already have a score from the committee it really won’t be seen unless it’s grades or being published.

I interviewed this week and I know they said the committee is meeting on monday for us (dont know if its for everyone else). I loved my interview day but I feel like MMI makes it hard to express your interest for the school

Sounds like they will rank the last interview group Monday then. Since it was stated earlier that admissions will be rolling, it will probably begin Monday or Tuesday and go throughout the week.

On the other hand, I don’t think they’re looking for whether you’re interested in the school at that point. They already know you are since you submitted an app. They’re probably more interested in the fact that you’re a good person who they can see as a good student/colleague

True. They did emphasize that they look at applications very in depth and that the interview is basically like a personality test cuz they wouldn’t interview anybody they had any reservations about.

I remember them saying it at the interview. Said short and sweet email. No need for a long PDF
ah okay. so more of a suggestion/request then? rather than a hard rule? because I sent in a pdf and got an email back saying it would be added to my file

Maybe they have decided to release them next Monday given the portal update?

Usually they do it the Friday following the committee review, and since March 16 (posted on the portal) is on the weekend, it may be next Monday. This is all speculation though.
Hasn’t it been said that they’re going to try and formulate the waitlist around March 15?

The waitlist?

"Your profile will remain on hold until such time that you either receive an offer of admission or an invitation to be on the alternate list."

Technically not the waitlist but certainly feels like a waitlist.

When did you interview? I did on the last day last week and they said we would receive 1 of 2 decisions today: rejection or hold. And the hold is either a WL or an A but they won’t distinguish between the 2. The group that may possibly get an A has to see if spots open up by the March 16th date. If not, they roll to the WL

Wait but I thought not everyone on hold was gonna make the wait list ?

At least for those of us who interviewed last week, we either got a hold or a rejection today I believe.

Edit: I may have been interpreting it wrong but I thought a hold for us was good and would result in a WL at the minimum.

Does anyone know if we will get an actual invite to the second look weekend? Or have I missed that?

There is no official second look weekend. On the FaceBook page someone mentioned that Dr. Baker said only certain people would get invited for a "second look" weekend.
