It’s actually a mixture of both outreach and clinical. It’s a student organization so it’s not exactly a massive operation. The focus is on working with the Detroit homeless population and helping to manage chronic disease like diabetes, high blood pressure etc. Students will set up tents at events for free screenings and work with local organizations. Also they try to provide supplies to help manage these conditions when away from medical care. The biggest issue is a large majority of the homeless population don’t have physical proof of being a citizen and therefore don’t qualify for assistance, so street med helps to bridge the gap. If you like working with the underserved and want good clinical experience, it would be great for you.Hi Everyone 🙂 I was wondering if any current student can comment on Street Medicine Detroit? Is it a popular program? and what sorts of specific tasks would the volunteers be involved with (like is it more of a typical free clinic or is there more emphasis on outreach) Thank you!!!
