They must have some pretty gnarly waitlist movement, right? Last year they accepted 500+. Their class size is almost 300 and so far they've only accepted ~300?

I wonder if more schools are doing something similar this year due to the traffic rules, offering fewer acceptances with plans to pull a bunch off the waitlist...I feel this may be a longer season than usual.

When I interviewed at MSU CHM that seemed to be the vibe I was getting from Dr. Maurer as he discussed how the traffic rules affected the cycle. He seemed to be confident in the waitlist movement compared to prior years (at MSUCHM at least). I have a feeling its going to be similar for most schools.

Hey, I was accepted last week, but still haven't received my acceptance package. How long did it take for the acceptance package to come in for you guys?

Any waitlist movement today? Seemed like there was some last friday

Hey, I was accepted last week, but still haven't received my acceptance package. How long did it take for the acceptance package to come in for you guys?

For me, it took over a week... maybe almost 2 weeks? I wouldn't worry too much. If it takes more than 2 weeks though, I'd probably send them an email just in case.

What do you guys mean by acceptance package?

What do you guys mean by acceptance package?

The one you get in the mail. You get a physical package that includes a checklist, an official paper acceptance letter, and a certificate.

Ohh okay, I thought you meant like some sort of financial aid package and I was like I never got that at all. Thanks for the clarification!

Hey guys. I am wondering: Post-acceptance, how much do grades matter at Wayne State's SOM? I tried calling the admissions office and asking, and I got conflicted answers. If anyone could help me out, it would be really appreciated.

From what others have told me they dont really matter... but this is something that i would like to know myself

The one time I called them, the person at the admissions office said just successful completion of the courses. Today I called, and a different person said "having an average similar to what you had applied with", which I do not totally understand (is it not allowed to have a GPA below it, or for it to dip a bit below it?).

Hey guys, current MS1 at WSUSOM here.. as far as grading goes, we have two "promotion decisions", one was at the end of October, and one is at the end of our MS1 year in March.. A promotion decision basically means if you are meeting the minimum grade averages (usually about 2 standard deviations below average) to continue on. I cannot confirm what happened if you didn't meet the criteria, as I don't know anyone who didn't meet them. Our first promotions decision combined our first 3 blocks test average, plus one anatomy practical. The tests counted for about 30% each total, and the practical was about 10%, equalling out to 100. The passing grade for the first promotions decision was somewhere in the low 60%'s.

For those who don't know, We take a ~120 question NBME test after each unit. This is the only grade we receive for a unit. We also have anatomy practicals spread throughout the year, 3 practicals in total. One was taken at the end of September with our MSK unit. The second combined thoracic, abdominal, pelvic, and perineal units anatomy. The third is taken at the end and is basically head and neck anatomy.

I'm not too sure what's going to happen with our second promotions decision, as it also includes our P4 course which is your basic physician/patient/ethics course taught in all med schools.

The averages for our NBME tests have been consistently around the 73-80% ranges. Averages for our 2 anatomy practicals taken so far have been about ~75%. We also have minimum passing scores for each NBME exam which have consistently been around 58-63%'s. Now let's say you get an 80% on the cardiopulmonary unit, but got a 53% on the MSK unit.. well you made the average score necessary to meet the promotions decision, but you failed the MSK test.. so in-between 1st & 2nd year you remediate the test (this is a rumor and isn't confirmed, as we are the first year going through this). Let's say you also failed your reproductive unit, you'll also have to remediate this test. But the rumors right now is that if you 'fail' anymore than 2 tests, you may have to restart 2nd year. This is unconfirmed, but has been talked about quite a bit amongst us MS1s here.

The gist of it is this - if you are scoring averages or just below averages on the ~120 question NBME tests and anatomy practicals, you will absolutely be passing. If you are consistently scoring far below average on tests, - and I'm talking over 1 standard deviation below average every time - this is something to be concerned about, but you may still pass. Keep in mind, scoring 1 standard deviation below average puts you at the bottom 15-16% of the class. And scoring 2 standard deviations below puts you at the bottom ~2-3% of the class.. out of a class of 300. Not many people are failing that bad, so it isn't something you should really freak out about tbh.

Also - little tidbits, There is no longer 'honors' for individual science units, instead it is a combined honors for your first year science units, and is probably given to the people averaging ~high 80's/low 90's on each exam. There IS honors for the individual courses of P4 and clinical skills, although these don't really matter, and tbh, honoring your med school courses doesn't really matter either - it's like bottom of the list on things to look at for residency matching.

Hi, if you do not mind, what content is covered in the first unit?

Thanks

Each unit is broken into systems, and we are taught the normal functions, and some pathologic functions, of anatomy, physiology, embryology, histology, pharmacology, and such. One unit might have more of one subject than the other - for example, MSK was heavy in anatomy and histology while cardiopulmonary was heavy in physiology. They vary.

The units, in order go
1. Foundations (August) ,which is a 4 week course of basically biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology basics so like the orgochemistry of how it all works, beginnings of embryology and fertilization and what not, basics of histology, and cell biology. Keep in mind not all of first year biochem is covered here - a lot is covered in other units. **ended with a ~120q NBME test
2. Musculoskeletal (September) **ended with an anatomy practical and ~120q NBME test
3. Cardiopulmonary (October) **ended with a 120q NBME test
4. Gastrointestinal (November) - **Test combined w/ renal/urinary
5. Renal/Urinary (December) - **Combined w/ GI for a test between the two units of ~120q NBME test
6. Reproductive system & Endocrinology (First 20 days of January)- **test combined w/ hematology & lymphatic (immunology)
----Plugged in our second anatomy practical covering material from cardiopulmonary till the end of reproductive system--
7. Hematology & Lymphatics/immunology (Last 10 days of January)- **test combined w/ repro/endo for a ~120 NBME test
8. Central Nervous System (February to mid-March) - includes head and neck anatomy **ends with a ~120q NBME test & anatomy lab practical on head and neck anatomy
End on March 15th 2019.

Hey! thanks so much for your input! i have two questions though.... among your classmates do you feel as if there is a competitive environment or is everyone supporting each other and "working as a team"? and secondly, would admissions care too much about senior year GPA or is it mostly try your best and just graduate?
1. I think this is something that is very cohort-dependent. My class is very supportive and we all share resources and strategies with each other on how to do well in the courses. Doesn't mean your cohort of peers will be similar, though.
2. I submitted by senior year GPA's at the end of my senior fall semester and end of senior winter semester - this is because I was interviewed and waitlisted in Feburary and wanted to send in updates of where I was and that I was doing well (and taking med-school relevant courses and not slacking off). I was accepted off the waitlist in mid-May. I would say if you are already accepted, try to keep your class scores above B's which really isn't asking much.

That's your first year?

When does MS2 start?
Yup. We start second year April 15th and go until the New Year. 3 month dedicated January - March 2020. The thought process here from the administration was it gives us a longer MS3 & MS4 to do clinical, electives, and away rotations (I think). Pretty sure we start MS3 in April 2020.

Likely also time to take Step 1?

Don't take this as a fact, but I am fairly certain they expect us to take step 1 some time in our dedicated period. Taking the WHOLE 3 months to study is definitely too much time. I'm thinking of taking around 6-7 weeks studying and then taking the damned thing.

Do you guys think waitlist movement is gonna be strong this year? the tracker says they have only accepted 300ish so far, don't they usually range in the 600s for number of acceptances offered?

Do any of you guys know how the current medical school dean leaving will impact the school?
It won’t. He has already stated he will be remaining until they find a suitable replacement. He has been wanting to resign for a few years now but as held off as a courtesy. He is a heavy hitter in the medical community, but has also been doing the job for a long time and at some point you get tired and have to move on. Rumors say he is resigning officially now because of a possible merger between Henry Ford Heath System and WSUSOM, and he doesn’t want to be at the helm during the transition (lots of headaches will accompany it, i’m sure)

Does anyone know when Wayne ends their interview season? And do they accept ITA emails? I have another interview near Wayne and if they're still considering me, I'd love to do both at the same time.

Hello there. My question was more so concerning grades in terms of affecting admissions, as I am currently doing an SMP program, and I am wondering if there is a certain grade I have to make sure I maintain (e.g. nothing below a B). Do you know anything about that?

For people who got acceptance packages, what is listed in the checklist?

Has anyone else not been accepted to the FB page? I requested like almost a month ago and nothing

Hey I wanna join also, but I can't find the group on FB. Can someone post (or dm) the link?

Interviewed a while back and have an II at Central Michigan University.

Any thoughts on the two Universities? I.e. USMLE preparation and CARMS if I decide to go back to Canada (I am Canadian, eh!). Right now I plan on staying in states.

Hey there, I don’t know of anything definitive like that to give you a straight answer, but honestly the safe bet it to always keep it Bs or higher. Even if you hit a C in something, if you’re accepted, chances are you’ll stay in. Good luck in the program!

Can’t offer much in terms of CARMS, but I know Wayne has a long history with Canadian students and takes good care of them. As for USMLE prep, for step 1 we get a 3 month dedicated at the end of year 2with First Aid and UWorld provided to us at the beginning of year 2.

Awesome. I guess I am torn between the two schools. Both seem nice. Not sure how school ranking or other factors play into the US system for residency, if that is even a thing. Most of my knowledge is from the internet and word of mouth.

I wasn't able to find an answer to this...but does Wayne State take ITA requests? Should I just send one anyway since it's getting to the end of cycle at this point so it can't hurt?

Has Wayne sent anyone emails saying that they won’t be interviewing them?
