2019-2020 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Im sure this has been asked several times, but do LOIs carry weight here? is it better to send one pre-decision or wait in case you are WL'ed?

From what I've heard, finaid can be a first come first serve sort of situation, so it may save you much more than $16 to send it as soon as you can! Columbia is probably in a better financial situation to give out as much finaid as needed, but it can't hurt to be considered for it early.
First come first serve? Isn't finaid debt free here?

Hate to be this person (again lol) but Columbia’s complicity covering up claims of assault in this case is pretty gross

There’s a history of this, sadly.

MSAR says earliest acceptance date is 3/02/2020. Was this always there or is this new info?

Yeah I wouldn’t go off that. I think we should all keep our fingers crossed for end of February. It’s a leap year so hopefully they make use of that extra day lol

Really random question--has anyone stayed at Bard Hall for an interview and knows when they accept payment for housing? I totally did not see the line in the confirmation form saying we needed to call ahead with credit card details and I fly in tomorrow for my interview. I'll call first thing tomorrow morning but just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be without housing for the night.

You can pay afterward. In-person or by calling.

This is pure speculation, but I have a feeling letters of intent don't hold much weight in the decision at elite schools such as Columbia. I doubt they have any trouble filling their class with top students as they know most people they accept will in fact attend. I feel like letters of intent would work better if you wanted to show a school that might think you're overqualified and wouldn't attend, that you would in fact 100% attend. No one can be overqualified for Columbia or schools of a similar caliber. I can't see it having any pull to move you from a rejection to an acceptance, but maybe if they are taking someone off the wait list and are deciding between the top few WL candidates it would matter. Even then, I think they know that the vast majority of WL candidates they accept are going to be ecstatic and likely attend. An admissions dean at another school did tell me that LOI are most effective when sent while you are on the waitlist, so if one is to be sent I assume that is the best time

I asked them and they told me to send one in so who knows, Columbia might be different.

Anyone notice there seems to be a huge in state preference here? Post II acceptance rate for instate is 38% vs 23% OOS. Seems odd since the school is private

Could anyone elaborate on what the group interview portion of the day is? Is it just causal introductions or is it a formal group interview
There is no group interview.
Only thing with a group was when Dean Armstrong came out and introduced herself and gave an overview of the curriculum. We just went around and introduced ourselves.

I seriously love how supportive Columbia has been this cycle.

Holiday email to interviewees, they reached out to say thank you after I sent a thank you on portal and they also assign an admissions rep post-II before decisions go out?! Very sweet of them.

What do you mean by "assign an admissions rep post-II before decisions go out?!"

I just got an email from an admin rep who will be ‘communicating with [me] regarding all things VP&S throughout this application cycle’.

I’m post-II (last week) with no official admit decision. I thought it was nice of them- now I’m thinking maybe it’s a mistake?

No, not a mistake. they do this for everyone post-ii. The admin "rep" is a student that they put in contact with all the interviewees if anyone has questions about the school. And they thank everyone for the thank yous.

Edit: Never mind!

Good! That's what I thought. It's really considerate of them and I appreciate it.

Oh you got it too?
Yup!! It turns out EVERYONE gets one. 🙂

I was trying to be supportive to @kserasera, by pointing out that it would be really good to have selectively received such an e-mail. As soon as I posted, I saw @jecki46's post that everyone gets them, so I retracted. Thanks for staying on top of me. You have no idea how flattered I am to receive such attention.

Did everyone respond to their admissions rep? I got mine around the holidays and completely forgot about it lol

That’s what happens when you jump the gun before people who actually applied get a chance to comment

hard to not give it to you when you draw so much. If you don’t like being called out, just fly under the radar more :ninja:

+1. It was a form email. No need to reply unless you have some specific questions
And +2. It was a form email with a first year med student for contact... no need to reach out unless specific questions, i don't think.

When you're right, you're right, although I'm not sure I really deserve it insofar as the big criticism of me is that I have the temerity to post without having applied, although I have taken the time to learn a lot about the process, and I really don't offer advice or opinions where I have no knowledge.

In this case, you are 1,000% correct. I was reacting to @kserasera's post prematurely, but I did take it down right away, once I saw the other post. Nevertheless, please feel free to call me out whenever it is warranted. I just don't think it is warranted to call me out when what I post is solid just because I am not a current applicant.

Woah thats a big vocab word!

Did everyone who sent a thank you get a reply with “Although it is too soon to know definitely how things will go this year, I can assure you that the Admissions Committee will keep you very strongly in mind.” I’ve talked to a few other students who got that same email after sending thank you, which is kinda sad because the wording makes it seem like they are basically saying you have a likely shot of getting in? At least that’s how it comes off to me but I could be reading too much into that
