Great! I have them all done and mailed them out 1.5 weeks ago, however, I haven't received any confirmation from DMU, not sure whether or not they got my forms.

Oh yeah, I haven't mailed it yet. Wasn't there an option to just scan everything to an email?

There's an admissions zoom meeting with a student ambassador tomorrow. Maybe check in there?

The form stated that "Mailing is preferred" so I mailed them, also confirmation of receiving the forms will be done via DMU email so I am checking my DMU email daily.

I haven’t done my titers or physical yet but plan on doing it this month when I can be seen.

I mailed in my childhood vaccines a while back and got a notification 1.5-2 weeks later that they got it. It shows up under the pre-registration checklist and says what I am missing.

Speaking of that checklist, I’m working on the HIPAA training and it’s super long, at least the first module is. It’s more reading than what I had to do for my scribe job lol.

Go the Pulse homepage, on the left column under "Incoming Students" click on "Incoming Students Home", then you will see in front of you, right under the admission contact information, the registration checklist.

On the plus side, they received my drug screen and posted that I "met" the requirement on the new admissions portal website! Now for that background check.

EDIT: realized I couldn't see it because my window was too small. Likely a Safari issue on Mac.

I don't really see anything stating that I met the requirement in the new portal, where do you see that?

So you'll click Fall 2020 DO, and on top, there should be 3 "tabs", not really tabs though. You'll click the middle, "Supplemental Items and Docs" then scroll all the way to the bottom and look at the "outstanding requirements" section.

I see nothing listed under outstanding requirements, I guess I am good then 🙂
 
I would join you guys, but work has a meeting at that time. Could someone give me some pointers of what they said? Also, how are you guys handling housing?
 
Also where are you all seeing the stuff about the physical and vaccinations requirements, as I don't have anything saying that I still need to complete it.

I'm still searching for a one BR or studio. I have a long list of places within a 5 mile radius that I like. However, I'm really trying to get a place next to campus. I'm on a couple waitlists for my IS state schools, so I'm also waiting another month or so before applying.

I'm trying to decide whether a studio / 1 br or a 2br w/ a roommate would be better (given that they are also a med student).

You can find this info on pulse. There's a student health form PDF that lists what you need. On the home page on pulse there's an Announcements table you can scroll down. Scroll down to Jan 30th and you will find it.
 
I wrote up a big list and hit "post reply" and it never posted. I don't feel like typing it all again, so here's just a brief list because I can't remember everything that was said.

The Zoom meeting will not be uploaded as it is not a "formal" meeting.

Students are automatically enrolled into the health insurance program. Due date for the waiver is 7/1 or 8/1 (She didn’t know exact date)

Health Insurance does not include vision or dental.


How to locate your Student ID - on Pulse, go to the Quicklinks Menu, select Colleague Self Service, then click on your username/usericon



Per the med student:

30-40 faculty members do research but can only take 1-2 students each.

DMU does not provide any tools, scrubs, gloves, etc. Students must purchase their own. (Sadie added you can purchase these at Matthews Bookstore and recommends to not buy anything just yet)

Board scores and LOR’s are most important for residencies. GPA was not ranked highly in importance.

4 tickets per student for white coat ceremony.

Dean Halm will be sending an email later today regarding the start of the semester.

DMU students are automatically enrolled into the health insurance program. If you want to process a waiver, the due date is 7/1 or 8/1 (Sadie didn't remember the exact date). Student health insurance does not include vision or dental.

How to locate your Student ID - on Pulse, go to the Quicklinks Menu, select Colleague Self Service, then click on your username/usericon

Per the med student:

We can free DART bus rides with our student ID.

30-40 faculty members do research but can only take 1-2 students each.

Board scores and LOR are most important for residencies. GPA was ranked 20th in importance and EC's were 15th.

DMU does not provide any medical tools, dissection kits, gloves, or scrubs. Students must purchase them themselves. However, upperclassmen donate stuff. Sadie added that Matthews Bookstore has a list of what we need to buy and recommends to not buy anything yet, until you can see what is on the list.

We get matched with our advisor during orientation.

We will get paired with a 'Big' to help us during first year. We will be matched with one based on interests and background.

Recommends to not study before classes start.

We won't need formal wear outside of clinical attire. Any school event will have students wear their white coat instead of a suit jacket. However, there is a gala in the winter where you may wear a suit if you'd like.

Says he hasn't heard anything about apartments denying DMU students. States the majority of their occupants are students and it doesn't make sense for them to deny students.”

Does anyone know if OS full-time students can be qualified for the Iowa Medicaid program? I am planning to try and apply to see if I can save myself 3k from purchasing DMU health insurance.

Can non-resident be qualified? Getting an address in Iowa is easy enough as long as I have my lease signed, but I will not be a resident of Iowa. My income will be 0 so that helps.

Sadie mentioned it 2-3 times that Dean Halm would be sending an email today but doesn't seem likely since it's after normal business hours. Perhaps tomorrow?

I think he'll just be restating that the semester is planned to begin as scheduled but is open to going online if the COVID guidelines at that time require it.

Dean Halm just sent out the email. Seems like we’ll be going ahead with in-person orientation as scheduled.

DPM students received a similar message from their dean.

I’m definitely not taking that as a guarantee that we’re starting classes in person (depending on the recommendations at the time), but more so of the fact that they want people around in case that is the case and/or for when classes are moved back to in person if they start online
 
Idk why it’s gotta be in person. Literally covid is out there and you’re trying to put a bunch of students together

I think it is a sure bet that we will start classes as normal, the Orientation will require all 250+ of us gathered at one place, so if they want to carry that out normally I do not see why they would care about having the classes online.

Yeah, it’s not a guarantee, but for now we should expect to be starting classes in-person. I’m sure the school will put us online if the COVID-19 situation gets worse in Des Moines.

Idk if anyone has been keeping up with it, but Iowa’s cases have been growing quite a bit. However, they are “re-opening” the state starting today. We’ll see in a couple weeks what happens...
