2019-2020 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m curious because my LMs around there with serious upward trend and 515 MCAT. Trying to get realistic picture.

Any Canadians get an interview invite yet? I submitted my secondary on July 12 :/ lizzy m score of 75.
Dunno if this counts since I went to uni in the US and applied EDP but I’m Canadian and received an II 8/2. Lower Lizzy m

Also you said you're IS in your last post but how if Canadian? Thanks
It’s like a 68 lmao. I’m in state since I’ve lived in Michigan since 2012, go to uni here, and recently got my green card. Grew up in Canada though 🙂

Oh so ur in state, technically not Canadian by admissions purposes, but still Canadian by all other standards . Good luck and I don’t think LM 68 is ‘low’ haha

This has been going on for years, it's never a problem. Also, in the slim chance that it ever becomes a problem, it would probably only affect residencies at DMC, not students who are rotating. And even if it did affect students (it won't), we have plenty of other sites to rotate at. We're the only school in the area and serve a population of 4+ million in metro Detroit. I wouldn't be concerned.

Thank you for the insight!

it's still concerning to potentially lose a residency site at a home institution-- considering that wayne matches to DMC pretty heavily. that should be a decent issue to mention. also, wayne isnt partnering up with Henry Ford either. i'm iunsure of they'll do tbh. the six year extension ends at when our M4 would be...

wsu is my home institution/ i work for the school of medicine and it's not really high on my list at all because of this + recent LCME probation + big cheating scandals

Can you elaborate on the recent LCME probation and cheating scandals?

recently got off probation* theyre back to full accreditation.
cheating scandal- cheating ring rumors so now they make students wait. wsu is trying to downplay it mostly to avoid anymore lcme backlash

Gotcha. Thanks for the information 🙂

Yikes did not know about this

Having an interview here really excited me and it was actually pretty high on my list of schools I want to attend, but after reading about all of these issues the school is having... I don't know anymore.

Any current students want to weigh in?

update: wayne is potentially on probation again since their physicians group (WSUPG) went bankrupt. LCME will reconvene in december to re-review. Also, boarthe d of governers is also suing the president

i love, love Detroit and learning here, but man, this school has issues

sounds like just the place for my lower LizzyM score to slide on in

how big of an issue do the M3 students think this is going to be?

wsu is in a ton of debt that they're taking more OOS students purportedly lol
i'm sure the school will figure it out- it's too big not to. M3 friends say its a good education otherwise, so take it with a grain of salt
this sounds like its working in my favour hahaha

Hey Buddy! What's your gpa? Mine's 3.6 so it doesn't look too good for me. Are you also applying to D.O.?

Mine is a 3.65 (GPA for Canadian Medical schools is higher via using their weighing system), but I graduated from an American University and I currently am under an adjustment of status when it comes to USA residency. I have been pre-approved for my green card and my filing month might be finally reviewed as early as next month.

However, I had a similar jump with regards to the MCAT score. Went from a 495 --> 506 --> 511.

I am also not applying to any D.O. schools.

Nice!!! Best of luck!

Thanks, you too!

Are you also applying to Canadian schools this cycle? I also have a hunch that you're an Ontario resident. If so, hopefully that 512 means that you killed it on the CARS section!

Ah, I see! Personally, I got a 126, but thankfully I'm an Alberta Resident. Then again, nobody knows what the hell is going on with UoA's adcom process.

Man, that's rough though. :/
Do you make the cutoff for Queens though? I think it's at a 127 right?

UWO is probably out though since I think their avg. last year was like 129 for CARS???

I was wondering if anyone has tips for the interview?
Being a first time and all.
Some questions I have are these:

1. How does the Formal interview and Med student interview differ?
2. What is the interview experience like? Is it stressful, relaxing, they pry very deeply into your application? gets very personal?
3. Does the MMI have any roleplaying? (I heard it doesn't)
4. Is the MMI more like patient-doctor scenarios, or can it literaly be anything?
5. Do the MMI prompts come with followup questions?
6. Why the heck is the formal interview so long compared to the other 2 components, lol
7. Any advice for noobs like me? (maybe best way to prepare or ways to get the dean of medicine to adopt you)

My buddy who got accepted to UofT and uOttawa (the two schools who dont value your MCAT scores) with a 4.0 GPA and a 518 MCAT (128 CARS), and plenty of ECs, got rejected at McMaster and Queens. Ontario is just ridiculous.

Interviews were very laid back and conversational, just prepare for some of the common questions and you'll be fine. You have ~30 minutes for each section (faculty, student, mmi) and they all fly by. The mmis were nothing crazy, just be good person and answer like that.

Wow, it’s sad to hear something like this happens, especially for a historical medical school like Wayne State. I hope and I am sure it will bounce back and not get on probation. But this is a bit concerning for a school like Wayne. Also, what is up with the cheating scandal? The school could have done a better job at supervising and preventing this from happening. I mean, they could have placed video cameras in exam rooms. That will solve the understaff problem and would deter cheating. I know the stakes are high in med school but cheating is a no no, especially in a profession where lives depend on your competency and honesty. I have zero tolerance for cheating. What a shame. Those students should be dismissed from the school.

Lol Canada in general is just ridiculous with their insane cars requirement; God bless America!
