2019-2020 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those accepted off the waitlist, did you send updates between the waitlist and now?

Congrats to those who got off waitlist! 🙂
For those who are still on waitlist, it's a good sign that waitlist is starting up even if it's in small amounts at first!

Congratulations! I was interviewed 12/20 too. Heard nothing from them yet.
Thank you! I was surprised to hear back this soon because I remember them saying we would hear back around February due to the holiday break. They have a huge amount of applicants to sort through so they may not have gotten to yours yet. Don't lose hope! I wish you the best of luck 🙂

Can any current students comment about the curriculum? Like is it pass/fail, how much time for dedicated, etc. Their website is missing a lot of info, or maybe I just missed it.

I would like to know this info as well! Wayne’s website doesn’t have a lot of detailed info. I do know that their grading is pass/fail though. Hopefully a current student can give us some insight!

Current M1. Congrats to everyone receiving acceptances and to those on the wait list, don't lose hope!

The Class of 2024 will be the 3rd class to move through the curriculum, so they have worked out the kinks with the new curriculum.
It is pass/fail.
12 weeks for dedicated, although most students do not take this long.

Thanks. And it’s system based with foundations in the beginning, right? Also do you learn all of anatomy up front, or do you learn it piecemeal with each system? And is it the standard 2 yrs preclinical and 2 yrs clinical or did they condense it? Sorry for all the questions lol.

Don't apologize for the questions! More information the better when deciding which med school to attend!

Yes foundations is the beginning unit. It is mostly biochem but contains genetics, embryo, and intro to pharm. This will help you with later units.

Anatomy is learned with each unit. Unless they change for next class (which I doubt they will), there is no anatomy with foundations because they want students to have a smooth transition into the course load. GA labs don't start until 2nd unit.

Pre-clinical (M1/M2) is 18 months to allow for a full 12 months for 3rd year. During M1/M2 you'll be doing a lot of clinical skills stuff and working on interview/presentation/note writing skills well before your third year. I'm condensing this a lot, but this is the important gist.

I can't comment as much on 4th year, but it is around 18 months. This gives students a lot of time for electives, research, away rotations, and more specialized clinical rotations.

Thank you so much for the insight! Are exams NBME? Do professors write any of the exams?

You have 2-3 exams per unit, two are professor written (the histology and gross anatomy practicals) and one is past NBME questions that the professors have selected from a bank of questions as to best represent what is taught in the unit (and not just some random keyword-searched questions that are irrelevant)

There are also 'formative quizzes' that are optional study quizzes written by the professors, but they are not NBME-like questions so they are not so much as to prep you for the NBME but to make sure you are understanding the material as you go.

Are you in-state or out-of-state?

Thank you so much!!! Is the NBME like the "final" for the unit? How do you feel about the professor-written exams? Do both professor-written and NBME exams factor into the grade equally? Sorry for all the questions; I appreciate it!
