2019-2020 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pass/fail with honors. There is no ranking, at least none that students are aware of.

New M2 (holy **** M1 went by so fast), and a member of the med school education subcommittee. There is a ranking, just not a numbered list. Please see the attached chart. This is taken directly from the updated guidebook on your pre-clerkship education.

so i interviewed about 3 months ago, never heard back and sent an email check in. i got a reply in less than 1 hour saying im on the WL and it seems they forgot to update me. my portal was updated at the same time i got the email

Does anybody know the cost of tuition and fees at Wayne State for this upcoming year?

Here it shows Tuition & Fees to be $37,601 and $67,797 for In-state and OOS respectively

Here it shows Tuition to be $34,039 and $61,414 with fees being $920, for a total of $34959 and $62334 for in-state/OOS

Are there other fees that we have to pay besides the "Student Medical School Support Fee"? I tried emailing the Financial Aid office, but they just said Tuition prices for the upcoming year have not been finalized.

The $34,039 value is correct for straight tuition; this matches the number listed on the 2020-2021 budget management document. Fees are listed as $2,454, for a total “Tuition + Fees” of $36,493. However I don’t know if this is constant across all 4 years?

Congrats! Thank you so much!

There are a whole bunch of bull **** fees that med school springs on you. You need to pay money to the student senate, that's a couple hundred bucks right there. you need to buy a parking pass which will put you back about 500 bucks for a single year. There are lab fees, elective fees, clinical fees, it's ridiculous.

I know the policy is different for every school so does anyone know if you are taken off the waitlist at Wayne State if you commit to enroll through AMCAS at another school?

Before you commit to enroll at a school, you need to withdraw all of your acceptances and waitlist spots everywhere else

Do you guys think that the fall med school semester will also be online? How would anatomy/clinical education work then?
Anatomy doesn't start until the second unit, which is around September time, so there shouldn't be an issue with starting anatomy on time. For clinical skills, there is usually 2 session during the first unit. This are basic skills and they might either choose to delay to in person, but more likely will be done in a tele-medicine setting. First year medical student's can't go into clinics until after these two first clinical sessions, so there earliest you would be in a non-simulated clinic even if classes were in person would be early September.

They like to not do anatomy and heavy clinical stuff during the first unit to give people some time to adjust to medical school.

Is the unstable relationship between Wayne and DMC something incoming students should worry about? I know the relationship has been rocky for over the past 2 decades and that they signed a 5 year extension last year, so I’m not sure if it’s something I should really be taking into consideration when deciding which school to pick by April 30

I think we should be fine because of that extension; it's also worth mentioning that WSU has affiliations with several other robust hospital systems like Henry Ford, for instance.

Just a side note:
Idk if it’s been in the media but a couple family friends work at Henry Ford and a ton of their healthcare workers caught covid due to the admin not allowing face masks to be worn during the beginning of the pandemic. Been pretty disappointed by how Henry Ford and Beaumont have been handling this situation.

That's really sad! Hope your family friends are doing well. I've definitely been disappointed in the ways that admins at several hospitals have been handling the whole covid situation tbh, don't think that's an isolated case unfortunately 🙁

Yea, that's what I'm thinking as well. I think just having the extra option to rotate at a hospital right on campus would save the unnecessary stress and time of having to travel to further sites, though. But I don't think it will be a problem for our class especially since our third year is going to start in 2022.

I am not in administration, but I am a WSU grad and have worked at DMC for years before applying to med school, and I personally don’t think current or incoming medical students have anything to worry about with WSU and DMC’s working relationship for the near future. The people who seem to be more concerned are higher-level leadership and physicians who aim for long term teaching careers at WSU and practices at DMC.

The Board of Governors will be voting on a 4.5% tuition increase for in state students and 2.5% tuition increase for out of state/international students starting this upcoming year. The vote will be this Friday. It seems likely to pass.

I was told that Feb 14th was the last interview date.. not sure that more people interviewed in March? Although I am curious to see some updated numbers on that tracker!

February 14th was the last interview date for this cycle

The commit to enroll option isn’t available for me? Anyone know where to find it? I only applied to Wayne.

Do we just email them to withdraw? I can't find anywhere to do it on the portal.

Hmm I believe so but don’t quote me on it if it’s not in the portal, It would seem a reasonable way to notify them ?. Not 100% sure though

Haven’t heard of anything yet do they send notifications at all over the weekend ? Or do we only have until 5 pm today to hear something .. I wonder

doubt it’s a one day thing. it’s more likely that they’ll gradually start pulling more people off WL than they’ll send out A’s, but thats just the hope of a fellow WLer. And itll keep going till 1st day of classes

I agree, I only hope yesterday would have yielded around 100 positions. The pain continues...
