Hey guys, does anyone have any advice for answering question #2 with no Osteopathic physician experience?
I live in a pretty isolated and rural area where access to physicians, in general, is difficult to come by. I have tried reaching out to DOs farther out in the city, but due to whatever policy they had, denied me of shadowing or they did not reply to email and phone message.

Do you guys think I could go about talking about the DO philosophy and my desire for primary care in place of that?
Yes, ATSU is more understanding this cycle due to Covid-19 and the inability of many applicants to get DO-related experience. I would just say that due to the pandemic and current restrictions at the hospitals within your region, you are unable to shadow or work with DO's despite making attempts to do so. Then pivot to addressing the question, why DO?

Awesome, thank you both for the advice!

I didn't consider using COVID as a potential barrier (I've tried to contact them in the past before COVID and still got a no).
Do you think I should still mention COVID? Or Just move on to why DO?

Unlikely. This is my opinion of course, but I'd imagine if you scored poorly before on the exam---what is considered poorly is somewhat subjective but i'd imagine anything <504 --then it would still behoove you to retake it as you don't want to give Adcoms any reason to doubt your academic abilities. Now if you never took the exam to begin with, then not taking it probably wouldn't count against you, but a strong performance would help as they do prefer that you have a score on file. The bottom line, retake if you've done poorly before; take the exam if and when you are are confident you can score well (this applies to retakers and first time test takers).
Suggesting it would behoove people to retake a sub 504 on a DO thread where the school's average MCAT is a 504 is very silly.

Sure call it silly, but below-average (even by a point below a school's matriculant mean MCAT) puts you at a disadvantage. Also, many other DO schools have averages higher, so unless you're only applying to ATSU or schools with MCAT averages at or below ATSU's, then you're going to be below average for every other DO or MD school you apply to. Let's be honest, a sub-504 is not THAT competitive even for a DO applicant, and you know that. Of course you can get into ATSU or wherever with a sub-504 but your chances go down when you are not even at the school's average; hence a retake is recommended if you have the ability and confidence to score better. Also, trends for many medical schools have shown MCAT score increases every year, so a 504 may not even be this year's mean matriculant score amongst matriculants with a score on file.

I would just be honest. You can mention that Covid made it more difficult this season to

Just be honest and then move onto why DO. I think it's fine to just say you were unable b/c of geographical barriers and no existing connections with DOs and so forth.

Sure, but lots of things put you at a disadvantage. It'd be better to have a higher GPA, more clinical experience, more non-clinical experience, specific community health center experience (in ATSU's case), more research hours, publications, better letters of recommendation, etc, etc. At some point you just have to be realistic about whether you're competitive or not with what you have. The vast majority of DO schools (29 by my count) have MCAT averages at 504 or below. There's more to an app than an MCAT as well. Some schools weigh GPA heavier than the MCAT. I've seen a number of people with 507+ MCATs being rejected pre secondary due to GPA in other threads, where people with much lower MCATs are getting secondaries.

Anyway, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I wouldn't want someone reading this thread, seeing your advice, and immediately thinking they're screwed for having a sub 504. And, again, there's much more to an app than an MCAT score, and the importance of certain aspects of an app vary wildly from school to school. In my opinion if I were to make a generalization, I would say that if you have a 500+ MCAT and don't get into a DO school after applying broadly, it's not because of your MCAT. If you have a 497-499, you probably need to be special or have ties in some way. If you're sub 497, you almost assuredly should retake for optimal chances. Hell, even Goro has his suggested DO retake cutoff at <499, and he's a DO admin.

Has anyone got their itinerary for their interview this Friday? I see we have to do a telemed appt on a wednesday and we are supposed to receive more information about that, but I have yet to receive this information.

Anyone else app still say it's not complete even though they submitted secondary already? I submitted my secondary on 8/13 but my status still shows not complete.

It says that we should wait 2 weeks after completion to check on our status. Did anyone call them after those 2 weeks? Almost been 4 weeks for me so im tempted to call...

I've been complete since 6/29 and have not heard anything, so it has been about 8 weeks for me. I sent an email asking about my status on 8/5 and they responded saying my app is still being considered for this cycle and once a decision is made they will email me.

I'd advise everyone to sit tight and wait (as painful as that might sound). COVID had changed the app process significantly for every med school. Silence isn't a bad thing. As long as you're complete and didn't receive a rejection, then you're still being considered. Submitting your app very early doesn't guarantee a faster interview invite. They stratify incoming apps based on their preferences and school needs and send out invites in batches.

Hi! does anyone know if there are two separate boards for KCOM and SOMA? there is one question that is the same in both secondaries and am not sure if i can copy and paste the same one? Thank you! and good luck to everyone 🙂

Yes KCOM and SOMA have different adcoms. You can copy/paste and tailor your secondaries for both schools.

for anyone wondering what the processing time is, i submitted secondary on 8/25 and got the "your application is now complete" email today, so it only took 1 day to process.

Is SOMA still using an MMI format or how are they conducting interviews this year?
I think it might be through their "Telehealth Assessment Encounters" that occur the Wednesday before your interview. That is what is happening to me, I will let yall know if thats true

Has anyone had the Telehealth Assessment yet? What type of background knowledge is necessary/was it hard?

while my app is still not complete yet after two weeks of submission.

I am confused. AZ Admissions stated that the interview is open file and MMI. What does that mean lol

The interviewers have read your files and there multiple 15 minutes interviews

can someone explain the different community centers concept to me? do you get to choose your preferred site after you are accepted or at the interview? and how likely are you to get a preferred site? I am very interested in this school but some of the locations of these community centers are just awful IMO and I could definitely not see myself there for three years...

Once you are accepted and pay the deposit you rank the CHCs. Apparently most people get one of their top three choices but the sooner you interview, get accepted, and pay the deposit the better

Just applied her with stats on the lower end but my application and secondary responses strongly align with their mission. Wondering if anyone knows how strongly the supplemental application affects our chances?
I am a current student. I don't know how heavily they look at the secondaries but this school definitely loves to see experience with the underserved and it can make up for other deficits.

Can confirm from my recent interview. Spent most of my time talking about my volunteer and service work and my interviewers loved it. Not one mention of my stats (3.6, 511). They seem very committed to their mission of serving others.

Great to hear. Was it open file?

There were questions specifically following up on my activities and things I mentioned in my personal statement/secondaries. Easy prep for interview; reviewed my primary and secondary and information about the school.

For the question that asks to list 3 significant clinical activities and community service, would it look back if I only have 2 for each?
Another question I had was for the question that asks about my experience with community health centers, I already talked about that in my "why SOMA" essay. So would it look bad if I essentially repeated the same info?

I got an Interview. Only issue is, I can't schedule it because there are no available dates appearing on the calendar. I checked every month, even in 2021. Guess I'll check back later.

when did you get the II?

Is there any way to pay the secondary fee online? My AACOMAS fee waiver expired, and they're asking me to mail a check to pay for the secondary

Could someone who has interviewed please tell us how the telehealth assessment was? What to expect? Any tips?

I just did it about 10 minutes ago lol it was super laid back. Don’t wanna talk too much because of the NDA.... but I really wouldn’t worry about it! Just be yourself (assuming you’re not a sociopath)

Trying to hide that the best I can!

Good to hear. Were there other applicants in the Zoom meeting or more of an individual thing?

I was part of a rescheduled group so there were only 4 students total. We checked in and sat in a waiting room together to get the directions but other than that it is all solo.

I would highly encourage you to call them and ask what you should do. They will probably be able to help you or let you know the next steps.

For the patient encounters are we supposed to act it out or mainly talk about what we would do in the scenario? I'm kind of confused about how I should approach preparing for this.
