2020-2021 Central Michigan

Hi there everyone,

Are there any other applicants that received an II, but are unable to choose an interview date? Every day for the next few months is grayed out and nothing is selectable. Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this before I contact their admissions team. Thanks!

Thanks so much!! Now that you're in 4th year, can you highlight what you've liked the most from CMU and one thing that you wish was improved?

of course! I really like how organized the curriculum is the first two years - it's systems based so things make sense as you're going through them which makes it easier to compartmentalize your knowledge and then work on integrating it when you're studying for step. also really liked the small class size. made it way easier to meet people who became my best friends. the thought of going to a school where I wouldn't know everyone I graduated with wasn't ideal for me. it's also really easy to find your niche there. there's a leadership position suitable for everyone and you can find what makes you you in an environment that encourages that. faculty is also always available to meet and talk/help you through things. though, I do wish the bridge between admin and students was tighter. a few members of the m4 and m2 class have been working to get admin more active with students to allow for quicker/easier change if anything with the school environment or curriculum need change. admin wants this to happen so they've been really good about being more vocal and reaching out to students more for different reasons.

hope this helps! Let me know if you want more specifics or have any other q's 🙂

also seems like everyone is panicking about their stats. I can honestly say that they don't even have a rhyme or rhythm for who they reach out to because it's such a holistic process. I know people who are admitted with <500 and those are are rejected with 520+ on mcat. you really need to just be an overall good candidate. your numbers aren't your entire app - if that was the case, trust me, they would not have cared to ask for the rest 🙂

Amazing advice !! Thank you !!!

HI all! First time applicant to Central Michigan. I posting to see if anyone else had a long wait before receiving their secondary.

My AMCAS was Verified 8/13 but did not add Central Michigan until Sept 3. I still have not received the Secondary.

Should I email them? Thanks in advance!

Just got the R today... pre secondary so not sure what theyre screen is. Good luck everyone!

You sure the secondary wasn't in your junk mail or something and you missed some sort of deadline to hand it in so was rejected?

Weird. Well, gluck this cycle. See you on the other side! (In medical school)

I don’t stalk the forums enough to answer questions, however I did want to jump in just for a moment to give a recent graduate’s perspective on CMed.

background: non trad, second career, limited science and medical background coming in to med school. Lowish stats. Now a PGY1 in FM at a prestigious residency program (had ZERO problems matching at my #1). I’m naturally a go-getter, and take ownership of my education.

CMED prepared me phenomenally well for patient care and medical practice. From self sufficiency, to patient interview skills, to medical knowledge and time management skills, I feel I am excelling even above some of my peers. The curriculum lended itself to learning key elements of team based medical practice, as well as patient centered care.

I wasn’t sure how my training at CMU would translate as that brand new doctor with the weight of the world now on my shoulders, it is a newer school after all. However, many months in at a rigorous demanding program, I assure you: CMU trained me well.

Best of luck on your application cycle! Hang in there, remember your numbers don’t define you, you are worthy.

Thank you for taking the time to write that! It makes me more confident in my choice to apply.

I somehow missed the email that the payment did not go through and just paid today. I was complete late July🙁 Any advice what I should do?

Email Admissions as soon as you can to notify them.

How detailed should the responses for biographical data be? I am having trouble figuring out what they want me to explain.
Also is anyone available to review my secondary essay for CMU?

I just wrote a few sentences of where I did schooling and how long I lived in particular cities. I’m from Michigan so I tried to make it as personal as possible. And I can read your secondaries!

Sounds great, I sent you a message now

For anyone interviewing on the 25th. Are you guys seeing all the buttons that are supposed to show up on the interview day (based on the email) or am I the only one who is just seeing my date when I click on it? I am confused because the email with the schedule told me to get familiar with the buttons before interview day and I am not seeing them

I interviewed 9/11 but I remember that my buttons weren't totally finalized until the morning of.

Thank you for the quick response. Just to make sure, when they say CMU portal its the app where we submitted our secondaries right?

Yes, that portal. There should be an Interview tab and Web Interview tab.

Did anyone submit Casper here? I can't decide if I should submit mine given that it says it's not required, but strongly encouraged.

So to those who applied, what were the final word counts on your essays?

Because right now I am at 500 for the main one, and 300 each for the re-app and COVID ones.

That first one having a 1000 word limit feels so daunting so I don't know if there is more I should include.

I think your best course of action is to pull in those who got an interview.

I went to 990+ in the first one and 450s on the other two. That being said I had things to say for the entire essay and every word, I hope at least, had a purpose. I heard that forcing filler content won't be seen favorably though. Just my opinion

Would also appreciate that lol

So just go with the flow I guess, good to hear.

Definitely do not need to hit the word count. My first essay had around 700 words, I made sure each sentence was valuable and I removed any redundant points. Just make sure you are answering the ENTIRE prompt (its 3 questions in one). Received interview in mid September.

My long essay only ended up being ~600 words and my two shorter ones were both around 350 words. I ended up with an II so I don't think the idea is to meet the word limit here. Just get across your ideas in a genuine manner.

Also, is the interview scheduling system not populating with new dates for anyone else. I received my II almost 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to schedule anything for October.

Also, I am kind of stuck on writing about COVID. I did research on it, and volunteering for relief efforts, but I don't know if I include that in the "how you were able to adapt to COVID" essay, or the "how COVID influenced my career in medicine" portion of the main essay.

Because I would definitely say I could write about what I did for both topic.

Could reaaaally use some help, lol.

Why not talk about it in both? They are asking 2 different things about COVID. You can talk about the personal hurdles you overcame during COVID and what strategies you employed for the second prompt. For the first prompt, think broader. COVID highlighted some very pressing issues in our current system. These are issues that we need to mindful of and work to address as medical students and clinicians. Surely your experience volunteering during COVID contributed to your passion for the medical field and furthered your desire to make a meaningful difference in your community. So just elaborate on that. The answer won't come right away, spend some time thinking on your own and make personal connections. Avoid generalizations and platitudes.

Hey, everyone! Nontrad, first-time IS applicant to CMU. App verified 9/24, secondary received 9/28, planning to submit it today!

Lower stats, so I'm believing in their holistic review of apps. cUGPA: 3.36, cGGPA: 3.80, MCAT 505.

Best of luck to everyone! We've got this! :highfive:

"Please provide additional details about having overcome significant hardship"

I thought this prompt had a 400 WORD limit, not 400 character limit. I just wrote a 391-word essay and have no idea how to cut that down into 400 characters. Can't get that hour of my life back either. lol rip 😆

ugh I did the same thing for Wayne when I first started writing my secondaries. You'll be surprised how much you can cut out and still sound coherent
