2020-2021 Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I understand its as an assessment. They wrote they specifically want to serve underserved communities so that's more what my comment was geared towards.

You can serve underserved communities in PHS on the daily, and the Navy does a medical mission every year to underserved countries. Additionally, even though service members and their dependents get healthcare, there are locations that are more austere and have fewer available resources that become like an underserved community (you might be one of the only physicians in your specialty), and deployments are very austere.

To add on to this, I grew up in an underserved community and for many in my community enlisting was a good way to pay for higher education, else they would not get that opportunity. From speaking with my friends who served, in many ways being a military physician means I would still be able to continue serving those from my community.

I hadn't considered much of this. Thanks for sharing/elaborating 🙂

I emailed my counselor yesterday just following up and 3 hours later I received the application complete email which I'm ecstatic about. Hoping for the best!!!! Hopefully I hear back soon.

Should we be worried if we did not receive a complete email?

The mission of USUHS isn't necessarily to serve underserved communities though. Their mission is to serve military members, their families and veterans. Unless you want to go public health? Everyone in the military and their dependents have access to care so I wouldn't consider this community underserved.

my top choice is the phs, but I'd be happy in the army too! I was told by Dr. Seide and a med student that generally the adcom looks for service commitment, regardless of branch preference.

Yeah just be able to talk about it, especially your motivations for service. I believe I wasn't articulate on these points last year :\

Is the invitation for DoDMERB something that occurs after an II? I just got the email but haven’t gotten an II yet

Just received II!! Secondary Complete on 07/26/2020. Marked complete on 08/10/2020. 509 MCAT and 3.88 sGPA 3.88c GPA. This is my top pick school and I have been refreshing this page every day for the last several weeks waiting to hear about interviews! Thank God I can now say I have one too.

To all the people still out there waiting, stay positive and be optimistic! Good luck to everyone applying and interviewing this cycle.

Received an interview invite yesterday! Marked complete 8/10. I'm currently active duty Army and submitted my conditional letter of release a month ago.

For all of those waiting it seems like they are generally working in order with invites sent 6-8 weeks from when you were marked complete. Good luck everyone!

Soarin and Will-- thank you very much for your updates!

In addition I've read books by military physicians (Dr. Rhee, Dr Cole, etc). I've also read books on military leadership (General Powell, General Mattis, Jocko, etc).
I've never seen Jocko's name outside of a Brazilian Jiujitsu context. I knew he had books but I've only read the children's one. Do you listen to his podcast?

Mine came 6 days after the II, I would check your portal and junk mail. It should be only for II since they're paying for medical evaluations

Wait really, isn't he known more for being a Navy Seal & his books on leadership? hahaha sorry I'm not as fluent in the BJJ side of things. Check out extreme ownership, it's a pretty good book. He also has stuff on his workouts. I've checked out some of his podcasts.

I’ve been in the Navy for 8 years and had no idea who he was, so don’t feel bad lol.

I'm not sure I saw some people on this thread say they received one and some people say they didn't. I finished everything that was required of me but I just wanted to be sure so I emailed my counselor and followed up with her almost 2 weeks after she didn't reply which is when I got the "complete" email. I just wanted to play it safe as this is my top school and didn't want to get lost in the cracks some how.

Any current students that can give insight on the background check/clearance process? I am referencing the form I submitted a month ago and I made a couple of errors. Should I wait for them to contact me? Will this result in any issues with getting clearance?

What kind of errors? Errors like you transposed a number on your address, or errors like you forgot to mention your misdemeanor drug charge?

Oh just errors on an address! I also missed a semester of a college job (but it wouldn't add an extra employer)!

Eh that’s not likely a big deal but you could reach out to security to let them know. They’re not going to deny you a clearance cause you got an address wrong.

No interview yet but also curious- when you file it, does USUHS immediately submit it? Will we get the clearance before we go to OCS? Just a little curious as what happens if we enroll then get denied the clearance?

It’s a secret clearance. It doesn’t take long to do, and it’s not particularly hard to get.

Is it cleared before you attend/what if you are ineligible?

If you get denied a clearance, your acceptance is revoked. You can’t serve as an officer without a secret clearance. But like I said, it’s hard to get denied for one unless you have drug charges or stuff like that.

No drug charges. Only thing that concerns me is extensive travel inc. China/Mid E. Wasn’t able to find anything about if we get the clearance before we actually go to school.

If they're going in order of marked complete, I'm worried because I submitted my secondary in July, around 7/13 (my AMCAS wasn't verified until 7/15). I haven't received an II yet... but I also never received a complete email from my counselor. Should I email them and see what's up with that? Should I be concerned?

It’s still early. It’s not like they through the days that people are complete and once they pass that day, you’re done. An email to make sure they have everything isn’t going to hurt you.

The only way to download and print your exam packet is through that email right? How long did it take for people to get their exam packet?

So I have been disqualified for a past medical condition (was expecting this), and I need to start the waiver process. I am a little bit confused on how to do this though. Can anyone provide insight?

The USUHS FAQ's have a section on commissioning. One of the questions regarding requesting a waiver says you should email the commissioning coordinator. The Commissioning Coordinator can be reached at [email protected](link sends e-mail).
Here is the page. Uniformed Services University

Will DodMETS contact me when I can go in and schedule my physical? Or am I supposed to call them to see if I'm in their system yet? I submitted the google form last Friday (Oct 2) and it said it would take 7 days, but my interviews are scheduled for next week so I'm not sure if I'll be able to schedule my physical before then.

It might be best to just reach out to your counselor or whomever is supposed to be guiding you in filling out your paperwork to see how strict the seven day turnaround is and what suggestions they have. I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened to someone.

Seems like calling the commissioning coordinator has been recommended in the past. When did you complete your physical? Still waiting to here back about my physical and a condition I have as well.

Will we hear back about the physical and eye exam if it went fine? Or do they only send correspondence if further action is required?

I know I have a DQing condition too. Please @ me if you figure it out?

I completed my physical on 9/15 and DoDMERB received it on 9/28, I had to submit some medical records and then was DQ this week as I expected.

Do we need to take the physical before we get a final decision?
From my understanding, you could get a conditional acceptance before completing your physical. However, no final decision will be made (i.e. an unconditional acceptance) without completing the physical.

I saw in an article, USUHS claims a 91% first choice match. "Overall this year, 91 percent of the class matched to their first choice specialty" USU Celebrates First Residency ‘Match Day’

in civilian match, 2019 had a 46% first choice and a 15% second choice match (i got this from the raw data-i'm pretty confident in this). Can anyone confirm if USUHS really has that good of a match rate? I heard mixed reviews where some people claim it's way worse, but it seems it is literally almost 2x better

How long does it usually take for DoDMERB to receive the medical and optometry exams? My status still says "incomplete", but I had the exams recently so I'll give it some time.

A few days ago, I got promoted in the Army. Would it be worthwhile to send an update letter for this? I have the official order that I can attach to the email. I felt iffy about this because people don't normally update their med school with a job promotion, so I wanted your thoughts. Thank you!

If accepted, does USU tell you which branch they're holding a spot for you in? If not, when does that usually happen? Also, is it possible to hold a spot in the class one branch and stay on a waitlist for others that you'd prefer?
