What does the MSAR say? I don’t have specific numbers for last year, but it usually is somewhere around a 3.7 and a 509-510. But MCAT is weighed much less heavily here. Just so happens that a lot of people who do well in school happen to do well on the MCAT. But we have plenty of people with lower scores, and they are crushing it. MCAT is actually not a great predictor of success in med school once you get over 500. Anything over 500 is generally the same as far as predicting graduating and passing boards.
The website says 3.63 mcat 509. Or 510 I think. According to AAMC they state mcat does correlate with step 1 and 2 scores and combinations of gpa and mcat are predictors. What interesting Is that for MSAR accepted candidates have high gpa 3.8+ and mcat 512 but actually mattriculants 3.63 mcat 509 or 510. So applicants should not be scared off applying based on MSAR numbers. I suspect a lot of the students matriculating are taken off wait list which is what happens at most schools

Isn't the goal here to show a high level of interest? Taking OVER 3 weeks to submit implies you don't really care much about this school.
Agree but you could make the argument you are so interested that you really wanted to take your time to do a thoughtful essay

Almost a month to write a thoughtful essay though? You can pitch it however you want, however, taking that period of time to complete a few short essay questions will likely not look good.

Just my $0.02, take it with a grain of salt.

The data showing correlation between MCAT and step 1 score has a correlation coefficient of about 0.60. That's pretty good, but not amazing. And Col Saguil (the admissions dead prior to CAPT Liotta) has data from several years showing that students who scored above a 500 were all equally likely to graduate from USUHS, pass step 1, and match. With step 1 being P/F for you guys, that data is even more important now because it shows that our holistic focus on the whole applicant is the way to go (and trust me when I say that we are actually holistic, not just h o l i s t i c). We have people in my class with sub 500 MCATs who are absolutely killing it.

@Matthew9Thirtyfive Any clue when II will be sent out? Pretty please 🙂

Sorry, I have no clue. They usually come out starting in August. It might be a little delayed because of things being totally different in the COVID era, but I would expect them to start rolling out in the next few weeks or so. Our first interview date is usually the beginning of September.

It's your $0.02, but it's accurate. It shouldn't take more than 3 weeks to craft 3 short essays on why you want to be in the military, go to USUHS, be a doctor. These are things you should have been thinking about when you decided to apply here. If you're late, I'd still send it in, but just know that it might not look great.

MSAR's cGPA/sGPA/MCAT median for accepted applicants are a 3.75/3.73/510. It might just be an average vs. median thing.

And they post the secondary prompts on USUHS's web page. Granted they changed slightly this year, but most really interested applicants probably already had those three essays at least drafted. I think 1-2 week turnaround shows interest and 3+ weeks probably (not always) shows you have been working on other more important secondaries.

Anyone else not gotten a pre-req email? I submitted my secondary July 12th, and my primary was verified August 4th.

I haven't
I submitted my secondary 7/13 (primary verified 7/2) and got the "Your USUHS Application - Application Complete" e-mail and the pre-reqs e-mail both on 8/4, so it took a little while for me. Seems like some got it fairly quickly, but for me it took a some time. I imagine the time varies and is not an indication of the quality of an application... it's just part of the process.

This. I got mine way after a lot of other people and I’m an M2 here now.

I completed the secondary app, however my primary still needs to be verified, hopefully this week or early next week. I'm guessing why I haven't received the invite to fill out pre-reqs is because the primary isn't verified yet :\ (my transcripts took a WHILEEE, one school was adamant on mailing instead of email).

Hopefully this isn't an issue, as I filled out the secondary app essays fairly quickly.

You’ll be fine.

hah, I think i'm just bugging out. USUHS is where I got waitlisted last year, and my top choice. Guess it's just the waiting game then...

Wow waitlisted last year . So close . What did you do this past year to boost your chances

1. Started volunteering for USO (Covid19 kinda messed that up)
2. clinical research publication
3. national conference presentation
4. 4th patent filed (5th is in filing).
5. Redid my secondary essays to highlight why I want to be a military physician, and really emphasize my clinical work (I think the publication will help me as well).

I'm a non-trad applicant that is looking for a career change from the industry, so I took the post-bacc route. As a result I'm quite old :\

Looks good to me . Sounds like you really put in the extra effort . Good luck

I'm 36, and my best friend in school is 36. There are a bunch of us!

My dad told me he had a 50 year old PhD chemist and and 55 year old grandmother in his med school class. So it’s never too late to change careers
Almost forgot . The most interesting classmate of my dad who I met was a 40 year old former VP at Exxon Mobile who is a neurosurgeon. Incredible guy but 180 degree turn around from previous career.

Has anyone actually received the email for pre-reqs? On the secondary submission page, they said the wouldn't be sending out confirmation that the secondary is complete so I thought maybe they were doing something different this year.

I got the pre-req email right after I got an email that I was complete so they’re definitely sending it out. Complete means all your LOR and score. They don’t send a complete secondary question email.

Woohoo! Glad to know there's a few of us out there. Any thoughts on whether age limits us from being able to do some operational medical electives?

It does not. If they require any sort of physical tests then as long as you pass them you’re good.

To update: I received my "application complete" and pre-req email simultaneously on 8/10, secondaries were in 7/12. I think this was because my primary was only verified by AMCAS on 8/4, due to some annoying Joint Service Transcript that I wasn't even aware of.

The next step for me is to start seeking out my letter of approval since I'm currently active duty.

Part C. Security Requirements asks about previous unlawful behavior. I never had any institutional actions, but have had run-ins with the law before (unlawful use of identification, speeding).

Does anybody know if this is an exclusion criterion? Also, does anybody know if previous use of marijuana precludes matriculation?

Depends on what it is. I had a **** ton of speeding tickets and was fine. Marijuana might be a bigger problem.

Yeah, the JST was a pain to get received by AMCAS. Thought it would be easier since it's electronic. Had to open trouble tickets with both JST and AMCAS to get it in, and it took me almost a month.

I dropped my contingent resignation request to get my Letter of Approval to Apply back in June. Hoping to hear back from my branch's personnel command in a month or so, which is BUPERS for me in the Navy. BUPERS resignation office said it would take a minimum of 2-3 months to process (wishing I had submitted back in April or May to be safe). According to my USUHS admissions counselor, USUHS will advance our applications through the interview process, but--if being considered favorably for admissions--an acceptance will not be extended until the LOA comes back from your branch's personnel command. Guessing from your profile name that'd be Army. Good luck with the process!!

Like getting caught with possession? Or would simply stating that one has smoked before be problematic too?

Can’t say for sure since I’m not an investigator. But I can say that I have seen people kicked out of the military for a single positive UDS for marijuana, so at the very least they will probably want an explanation if it isn’t an outright DQ.

My dad interprets UDS for DOT FAA and for private employers who do safety sensitive work. Either as preemployment , random , and for I think security clearances and a single positive test is basically a no go

I freaked out about my 1 ticket for failing to stop at stop sign 2 years ago but thank god I checked to see that was ok. Getting a little sensitive as crunch time happens

Hey Matthew. I had question about the army fitness test which I think you have to take twice a year . The 2 mile run minimum it’s on line is 16:39. It that a hard stop for applicants. As a college swimmer , we don’t run much and I really feel like a fish out of water when I run

Lol yeah that won’t be a problem.

Yes, the minimum standards are the minimum standards. Start training now.

But I’m pretty sure the 2MR minimum is like 20 mins.

I swam through high school, and was easily able to run 2 miles in 14 min ish. 2 miles is mostly aerobic fitness which you should have plenty of as a swimmer. I'd be surprised if you couldn't hold an 8 min pace running.

There are published score charts per age and sex. I don't believe run time for males ever get to 21 minutes. I'm an old army guy-- I wish.

They changed the fitness test for the army. The ACFT doesn’t have different times for age and gender. It’s by MOS.
