2020-2021 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick question, If you get off a waitlist now, do you need to select PTE for that school as soon as you receive an offer? Even if you are still on other waitlists?
PTE does not preclude you from remaining on WLs, as evidenced by all of the people with As who had to PTE by 4/30 who have been receiving calls off WLs the last few weeks. The school will give you a deadline. It will typically be one week.

If you have nothing else, you have nothing to decide and no reason to wait. If you are PTE somewhere else, you need to decide in that week which school to keep and which to drop, since you can only select PTE for one school at a time.

You are confusing PTE with CTE. You have to CTE by whenever the school's deadline is. THAT's when you have to drop your WLs. and call it a cycle

The sun'll come out... tomorrow....

Bet your bottom dollar that, tomorrow...

There'll be sun...
Just thinkin' about, tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow
'Til there's none

When I'm stuck a with day that's gray and lonely

I just stick out my chin and grin, and say, oh...

The sun'll come out, tomorrow
So you gotta hang on 'til tomorrow
Come what may

Tomorrow, tomorrow
I love ya tomorrow
You're always a day away
(brass interlude)
The sun'll come out, tomorrow
So you gotta hang on 'til tomorrow
Come what may

Last weekend I made the “mistake” of watching too many medical school parody music videos for several hours, and felt even more forlorn about not getting the A.

Not this weekend! This weekend I stayed resolved knowing that I’ve sent in my updates and that so much of this process can be random and beyond our control.

I know there will be good news in store this week. It may not be for me, but it might be for you! And there will be chain reactions that come from that too. Onward!

explaining to work that i might have to leave at the drop of a hat if i get in but also might not and that i won't know for certain until it happens but that it probably will not happen but that it could

Did this the other day and my boss seemed to be highly suspicious that I did something awful because she doesn't understand how this process works and was 100% confident I would get in this year and not have to reapply.

i know! it's not fun having to tell all the people who were rooting for me that this is a common result/tons of capable people dont get in right away/WL is actually an accomplishment/etc over and over

idk, I guess I'm a cynic, but I've realized that nothing counts until you get an A... Almost getting there is the same as not being remotely close... this is just my opinion tho.
Effectively, yeah, but like. If you didn't have a single interview, your app probably needs a significant revamp/might have red flags. If you had 1+ interviews, it probably didn't, and applying again with a stronger app will definitely help.

This^^^^^^^^^^^ SAME. When I told friends/family I got put on waitlists they keep saying that waitlists are good and I get upset because nothing is good until I have an acceptance 🙁 There's nothing to show for "almost".

well there kind of is something to show for it. u could get off the list at any moment and that isnt true for tons of other qualified/intelligent/kind people who didnt get on waitlists. u also know that, if u gotta reapply, you have an app good enough to make it past what seems to be the biggest screening, which is going from applicant to interviewed applicant. then on top of that you weren't rejected after an interview. so, yeah, it kind of is an empty consolation prize bc a WL means nothing in terms of acceptances for this year, but in terms of potential (for this year and for the future) it does. hope im making sense

I'm also among those that feel like my IIs were a result of them being virtual and schools simply offering more interviews. Cynical or not, I feel like I wouldn't have been offered as many IIs in a 'normal' cycle and I have consequently been placed on the WL for a school's convenience while being given an unrealistic sliver of hope.

this explanation was just what i needed. I have been so judgemental on myself about my waitlist positions, and i needed to be reminded that if i did not have potential i would have been rejected flat out! regardless of where i fall on the list, its still an accomplishment to get on the list.

I know this sounds bad but seeing people with multiple acceptances post on here and on other school threads about struggling being on WL just makes me feel even worse about myself.

Like you AT LEAST HAVE ONE (in most cases multiple) FREAKING A and you're upset that you don't have more??? 😢

it's impossible not to be hard on urself/feel inadequate at times as an applicant. ur not alone

@KnightDoc do you think its too late at this point for waitlist movement?
Absolutely not. At least one school thread is reporting more TODAY. As we have been saying all along, the first big wave will go from the end of April to the middle of May. That's now over. What we will have from here to the end is a series of smaller waves, each one a little smaller than the one before.

The reason each one is smaller than the one before is because, as always, movement is caused by excess As being dropped. The biggest surge is right after 4/30, because that's when the most As are dropped at one time, due to the requirement to drop to one by 4/30. Many people ignore the requirement to drop to 3 by 4/15 since it cannot be enforced.

Starting on 5/1 multiple As can only be created by people already holding an A being called off a WL (and, of course, people with extensions milking them to the bitter end). Every person receiving an A who didn't have one before is a very happy camper ecstatically reporting success on SDN, and also represents one less call in the next round. Calls will continue into June and July, but there will be fewer and fewer of them until all seats are finally filled.

The big question -- has most of the movement already taken place, or will the movement over the next six weeks or so equal or exceed that of the last two? I honestly have no way of knowing, but reported WL movement from prior cycles suggests that it is far from over. Really, after studying this for the past two cycles, if it were me (and, it very well might be next year), I'd be cautiously optimistic through the end of May (depending on how many WLs I was on, and whether school gave me any indication as to my position), after which I'd start focusing more on gap year plans and less on attending med school in two months.

As you know, things can and do change right up until the end, but, just like it's premature to throw in the towel on 5/2 (as many people who received As in the last two weeks wanted to do, right here!), it's also overly optimistic to be counting on a miracle the third week of June. Praying yes, counting no.

I respectfully disagree. I see why you would feel this way, but, TBH, almost getting there gives you a HUGE leg up on a reapp, and is a very powerful sign of ultimate success, as opposed to not being remotely close, which is very hard to overcome in a process with a <40% success rate an tens of thousands of newbies coming in to compete every cycle..
