2021-2022 Buffalo (Jacobs)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can anyone with an II speak to the possible dates? Especially if you are electing to have the Interview in person?
They first sent an email asking you to choose whether you want virtual or IP and then sent one about your actual date. I may be wrong about this but I believe that they have IP starting late august.

OOS Secondary received!

@wysdoc secondary prompts as follows:

1. In 500 words or fewer, please explain your reasons for applying to the University at Buffalo's Jacobs School of Medicine. Please be specific.
2. In 500 words or fewer, please explain how you would respond to a fellow student who muttered a racist or homophobic statement under their breath in your presence and that of other peers?
3. To some extent, everyone in the US has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 500 words or fewer, please explain the ways in which you and your family have been adversely affected by this pandemic. (OPTIONAL)
@wysdoc
I'd like to add that despite the word limit being 500, the supplemental application has a max character count of 5000 instead.

Well that's kinda confusing - 5000 characters each, or 5000 total across all 3 essays?
To clarify, each prompt asks for "500 words or fewer," but the text box itself allows for 5000 characters each. So the limit for each prompt is 500 words or 5000 characters, whichever comes first!

So I submitted my secondary and then went to the other email they sent to pay my fee. I got no email confirmation and so I went to Check Your Application Status to see if I could find out if it had been received. It says my secondary was not received, but everything else was. For everyone who finished their secondaries and submitted it, how long did it take between paying the fee and receiving some sort of notification that UBuffalo has everything?

hi friends & comrades, help. so I am way extra late to the game, took my MCAT 07/17 submitted my primaries 07/18. Was verified within a month, and received/submitted my secondary 08/24 (a week after getting my MCAT score back). my committee letter, official MCAT scores, secondary etc. have all been received, and I got an e-mail confirming my app was complete 08/25.

STATS stuff: I'm a "non-traditional" applicant, miserable undergrad GPA (like a 3.2), 3.7 for my masters cGPA (which was like 30 credits of straight bio and bch so hopefully it goes toward my sGPA?) and a 506 on my MCAT :'(. worked as a medical scribe/TA in grad school and have worked in 3 research labs (none of which I have authorship thru, just an acknowledgement on a publication).

do we think there is hope? if so, how long are people waiting between receiving the "complete" status and receiving II's?

I applied to a few DO's, but UB is the only MD I applied to bc I love buffalo so dang much (go bills :D), and submitted my primaries before getting my MCAT back and now I'm torn- like do I start studying to take the MCAT again? for those still reading: pls bless me with any insight. thank u beautiful baby doctor friends. sending you all love and luck, trust your process!!!!!!! (wish I could take my own advice lol).

Obligatory quote by Wayne Gretzky then quoted by Michael Scott.

All Office references aside, UBuffalo seems to have accepted applicants with a lesser MCAT than you (On MSAR, their 10th percentile accepted score is a 504 so your 506 looks just peachy). The 3.2 floats around their 10th percentile cGPA of 3.26 as well, and with your Masters I assume it shows a lot of healthy growth. Scribing is AWESOME and even if you don't have a publication, showing an interest in research is good! From what I've been told, the whole reason research matters is because schools want to know you are applying your coursework to flex your own opinion on a subject you're interested in. Therefore, you don't need publications to show you understand that subject well enough to contribute to human knowledge on it. The way I treat NY in general (not just NYC) is the melting pot of culture. Imo, coming from a diverse background and having experience with teaching shows potential to enrich the med school/contribute to that melting pot. You got your secondary in before Labor Day so I could say your app would also be considered "early".

TBQH I'm in the same boat as you, 507 MCAT, gap year full of scribing and research, and experiences not every pre-med has (rare dimensions of URM and extremely active LGBTQIA+ ally). That said, only my latter two years of undergrad had good GPAs. Despite my growth from years 1 and 2 and the number of integrated classes in 3 and 4, I can't go back and change anything and it's scary to think it's still "just a number". I'm considering retaking the MCAT despite it in reality being more of a one-off thing for me because it matters so much. I also applied to UBuffalo pretty late and I haven't gotten an II, but I think we made a smart choice applying here because it seems like a place that values diversity, character, and experience more than it does numbers.

Probably not the reply you were expecting, especially from someone worrying about all the same stuff at the moment, but a wise man once said "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" and then another wise man said it in an American sitcom. We'll get through it, and hopefully we can be classmates at UBuffalo :)

stop it i'm crying this was so sweet. thank you for taking the time to reply :) inspiring to hear from someone in the same boat as me still chugging along. i also think it's important to consider, and hopefully they will, the immense personal growth/maturation that comes along with a few gap years. and as far the personal experiences you've mentioned, i think that just speaks to how compassionate and empathetic of an individual you are- something so invaluable when it comes to the career path we've chosen. and i'll think they'll recognize that in you! as far as the MCAT goes, congratulations first off that's score is indicative of incredibly hard work. i'm not sure when you took it, but if you're in the same boat as me: it was recently enough for the majority of the content to still be fresh in my brain, so as i see it there's no harm in maybe doing some light studying/daily brushing up and possibly taking it again by january (would still be within the DO range for this cycle, would put us back a cycle for MD tho) while we wait to hear back, but like why not. definitely an option if we feel like we can get an even better score-and maybe take some of the pressure off our lower tier GPAs. regardless: you've made it this far and that's something to be so so proud of. wishing you ALL the luck, keep me posted!

**also disclaimer: when i say definitely an option to retake, i didn't even realize how much of a privilege it is that i can re-register for the exam and uworld (thank u nana :'). this process is so expensive :')**

- a hopefully future UB classmate! :)

Nice username! Bills Mafia? :)

To those that got an interview, did you send an email to [email protected] to confirm the interview or to Ms. Donna Ball's email? And did you receive an email confirmation after you confirmed your interview?

For anyone who selected in person interview, when you were filling out the registration form on google docs did you upload your COVID-19 vaccination card as proof or something else? Also when you submitted the google form did you get a confirmation email or a copy of the form? Thanks

I signed up for in-person and am still waiting for that form as well. I emailed them and they said that they will send it out at the end of the week.

Anyone with a virtual interview between 09/15 and 09/22 not get their assigned interview date and times yet?

After the interview invite, we just have to send a confirmation email and choose in-person v.s. virtual, right? I sent the email last night, when should I expect a follow up email? Will they give me dates to choose from?

I also emailed yesterday afternoon and have not received a reply yet.

For people that already completed an in-person interview, did you wear a mask the whole time?

For the interviews, yes. We were checked in and then brought to a room for lunch where we were able to take our masks off to eat but during the actual interview, you are expected to keep your mask on the entire time. Shaking hands is optional and you can do an elbow bump instead (or whatever you're comfortable with).

For the people wondering how the experience was, it was great. Everyone I met was really nice and made me feel welcomed, totally eradicating all of my anxiety about the interview. It definitely made me want to go to this school even more. If you're considering doing an in-person interview, I would highly suggest it, especially since not many schools are offering it this year.

How far in advance did they email you about who your interviewers are?
