2021-2022 Rochester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to y'all but man now I'm bracing for a WL (9/2 interview)

URMC is my top-choice school. I was complete 7/22 and I haven't heard back since then. I'm ORM, OOS, LM 81. I'm getting antsy and wondering what's going on, because I really think several aspects of my application indicate I'd be a great fit.

I checked the interview tracker and I wonder if there's something like yield protection happening? Maybe it's just a coincidence but the MCAT scores on the tracker for Rochester are almost all <520, and mine is above 520. I'm worried maybe they think I'm not worth the time for an interview because they don't think I'll actually end up going. Plus, the secondary was so short, I didn't get a chance to express how much I want to go there.

Or maybe they're focusing on more IS applicants for now? The tracker shows quite a few IS applicants compared to other private schools.

I could be totally wrong about all this. I guess I'm just trying to make sense of the situation beyond there being something terribly awful about my application that makes Rochester not want me. I would appreciate any insight from you folks.
I certainly understand your frustration but I don't think it is wise to attribute everything to yield protection. There certainly are people who have over 520 MCAT who has gotten an interview. No one should draw any reasonable conclusion based off of a tracker. Many, many people do not fill those out.

There are so many factors that can contribute to one getting an interview/acceptances. One being uncertainly caused by human component. I bet it is affected somewhat by who your application is reviewed by and what their feelings are for the day. At the end of the day, it is not the robots who are screening for our applications... it is done by humans.

Of course I can't say anything with certainty, but I don't think you'll be yield protected. Like NaKATPase said, their median was 518 and their 75th percentile stretched to 523. n=1 but I had an II with a score >520. Definitely don't count yourself out yet! We have no idea what order schools decide to look at their applicants in. Rochester is especially mysterious since there were barely any secondaries, so many people also probably submitted close together. While it is easy to jump to the worst, I wouldn't assume anything is wrong with your app by any means just because one school hasn't gotten back to you yet 🙂 Idk about the rest of your cycle but if you have an II anywhere else, that would definitely indicate that your app is great!!
Thanks for this. The yield protection thing was definitely something my anxious brain conjured up and I realize it’s unlikely 😅

You’re also right wrt the secondary submission time. And I was just thinking today that they probably get quite a few apps from people who know they have a breezy secondary and wanted to add another school to their lists.

I do have a few other IIs so I’m trying to stay hopeful. I’m just super anxious to hear back!

For those who were accepted and decided to accept the offer via the portal, did you get a confirmation email after (I didn't)? Also, is there no deposit to pay? Just wanna make sure!

I didn't get confirmation either and as far as I know, there is no deposit.

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t pay a deposit until you commit. Accepting your offer right now doesn’t commit you to the school, just holds your place on the accepted list.

Nah the two other schools I got an A from asked for deposits. Rochester doesn't require one I guess!

Can someone share more information on interview day? I only see the welcome session + group discussion on my schedule.

Are there more one on one interviews, and if so are they open or closed file? Thanks!

Anyone feel like they've been forgotten? I interviewed first week of September so it's been 8 weeks at this point. Do you think it's worth shooting admissions an email on Monday?

Probably not

I would wait another week or two. I interviewed 8/26 and didn't hear my decision until today (9 weeks later).

Pre-II R, OOS. Didn’t like that R email at all but whatever. It is what it is.

Edit: complete mid August

Same here. They stated a lack of shadowing, but I live in North Central West Virginia, and no matter how many physicians I contact, they still aren't allowing students to shadow because of the pandemic.

That doesn't sound too fair.... sorry to hear that.

Oh dear, another R wave

I agree. Not getting any clinical experience is one thing. But not getting any shadowing is another- it's a pandemic where opportunities will be very rare. That's a bummer I'm sorry to hear. Seems like today is an R wave.

Sorry to hear about that, definitely frustrating. Just to clarify - they sent you a personalized message with reasoning behind the rejection?

No - it was the same patient-care email that (I'm assuming) everyone with pre-II R's got today, but it included shadowing, which was is the area that my application lacks. And by lacks, I mean I have under 30 hours of shadowing. (I have a lot of other clinical experiences.) I'm sure I wasn't rejected JUST for this, but when I was rejected from UAB, that R wave was shadowing-related so I kind of put two and two together. My fault in making it sound like a personalized email - I was definitely frustrated when I typed that lol.
