Hey all! Not sure if anyone will have a solid answer for this but figured worth a shot to ask. I interviewed Nov. 1 and they said "MAY hear a response in 10-12 weeks". Does anyone know if this is an accurate estimate or have others heard earlier/later? Thanks!
I interviewed oct 4th and haven’t heard back yet - my estimated time was 8 to 10 weeks - just coming up on 8 weeks. So guessing it’s a realistic timeline.

As mentioned earlier, it's highly dependent on your admissions counselor and the people that you get from the board. I would say the 10-12 week guideline is pretty accurate but some people will need to wait longer while others hear back sooner.

Here's how i think it works:

Shouldn't be any wait-list activity until around February, there are currently ~100 spots filled with ~75 on hold (and roughly equal partitions remaining for each of the branches), these spots will be filled by the end of January. The remaining spots will be filled (along with any voluntary drops or drops due to lack of medical or security clearance) in the order of the rankings of the wait-listed candidates (your board score out of 15). Most 15s got full acceptances. If you received a 14 you had a good chance, but you're not necessarily in. If you're a 14, you're going to get called up before those that received 13s, and likewise for 12s. Depending on how competitive it is for 13s (and how many drops there are), 12s may not get called up for a spot at all.

I was wait-listed last Friday (10 Oct Interviews) with a 12, so I almost certainly will not matriculate to USUHS (unless there's some miraculous surge of attrition this year compared to last). Sad times, but I gave it my best effort. Good luck to everyone else in cycle and Happy Thanksgiving.
How do you know your board score?

I always thought that USU would just fill their entire class (~165-175 with maybe a handful of open spots) and WL individuals who they would have otherwise accepted, with the "hold" list being synonymous to a secondary waitlist (for in case the primary waitlist runs out). Then, applicants get off of the WL as accepted students choose other schools, medical disqualify, etc.

It's way too early to be pessimistic. Some people will get off the waitlist before the end of winter, while others will need to wait until June/July of next year. Your interview is not the only thing that goes into a final decision. Remember that the previous cycle was abnormally competitive and austere. I can't speak for this cycle with 100% accuracy but I'm willing to bet that it's toned down at least a little bit.

That’s not quite how it works. They fill the class and then people who get accepted go on the waitlist. People who score a 15 will get a spot immediately because there is a revolving set of 5-10 spots that cycles in and out as people are DQed or withdraw. The score you get does not necessarily correlate to your spot on the waitlist. There are multiple factors.

At least that’s how it was in 2019/2020.

Is there anything that can be gleaned from being asked to submit an age waiver or is that a requirement prior to consideration from the board?

Hey @Matthew9Thirtyfive do you have any info about how strict they are with medical waivers? I've now got two codes that need waivers, but they're relatively mild (I didn't think either one would need a waiver - neither would prevent my deployment or reenlistment)

Really just depends on what they are. It’s not really USUHS that decides, but big mil med.

Waitlisted for AF on Wednesday. Super bummed. Not sure my chances of getting a spot. Interviewed week of September 27th.
As mentioned before, getting waitlisted at USU is very good news. It just means "accepted but the class is full." Normal medical schools are allowed to play with their "budget" and accept a large number of students by using previous years' data to estimate the number that will choose other schools (they can play with their class size). USU's strict budget doesn't allow this, so most students are waitlisted. Fortunately, the majority (about 100 out of 170ish students) of the incoming class will come from the waitlist.

You're very early to the game. You have a good shot if you can hold out/wait for 4-6 months.

Has anyone who’s been invited to interview next week schedule their interviews yet? I haven’t heard from anyone yet.

Never mind I just heard from someone!
Have you heard from both of your interviewers or just one?

I'm scheduled to interview the week of November 29 too, and I've only heard from one interviewer so far. It says to wait until Thursday of the week we're scheduled to interview before contacting the admissions counselor, which would be December 2 for us, but that seems a bit late, and I can't help but get anxious...

Is it a common occurrence not to hear from an interviewer until close to the last minute?

I also only heard from one interviewer. I have it on Friday.

Just received a status update stating that my application is being held so the Admissions Committee can review a greater proportion of the applicants before offering me an interview. Can anyone speak to my chances of receiving an interview after this (let alone getting accepted)?
I’m a little confused because I applied in 2019 and received and interview and was even waitlisted with an MCAT 10 points lower and no clinical experience (500 hours now). I also commissioned as an Army Reserve CBRN Officer since then.
I’m not here to complain, USU is a fantastic school with a competitive applicant pool and I know an interview is never guaranteed. I’m happy to still be in the running, but disappointed with the most recent message.

Thanks in advance to all who may be able to answer my question.

I got this same email, I am not sure how to take it? It seems like an overall positive email but I have no clue what to think of it. I’m curious if anyone has any insight on this.

For some further context, I also applied last year (but I still didn’t have any clinical experience and I had an MCAT retake with a section below 124 so I assumed I wouldn’t get an interview) and received the same hold email word for word in early January. I was then rejected at the end of February without an interview. Last year I expected to be rejected so it wasn’t a surprise. This year I felt like I really improved my application from my initial waitlist, but got the same message from last year’s rejection.
It definitely doesn’t mean we’re out of the running, I just know what it led to for me last year so I was disappointed when I saw it.

Ohh okay I hear you. I’d be interested to know if this has turned into an interview invite for anyone else. Staying positive for the both of us!

I was out on hold for re-review in august. I didn’t get an email or portal change but when I asked admissions for a status update they told me I was on hold. I got an interview invite in October and interviewed a month ago! It’s slightly different but does show that a hold isn’t just an R. Just send an update soon with any new experiences, etc and make sure to add in that you remain interested and excited about the prospect of attending USUHS and maybe why you feel it’s a good fit. Reminding them who you are and that you care about the school can go a long way!

If I remember correctly, USU will start working through the hold (alternative?) list as spots on the waitlist open up or when they've exhausted the waitlist. Not entirely sure but I believe it's similar to how traditional waitlists work.

So the alternative list isn’t the same as a pre-II hold. After you interview you can be accepted, waitlisted (accepted but there aren’t spots yet), or alternate listed (basically a waitlist for the waitlist. They like you’re application but have a few concerns. This likely will lead to a late rejection except in very rare circumstances)

Any other Public Health Service applicants here? Just found out I made it past the first round! I just found out was accepted to the school, but now need to do the addendum application and see if the Indian Health Service will select me for the position before I get the actual conditional acceptance. Hopeful hopeful!! Would love to chat if there's other PHS applicants

I’m an PHS applicant and I already started the addendum process even thought I didn’t get an acceptance (hopefully I will!)

Hey guys, I'm going to go get my physical done later today. I was wondering if I'm responsible for turning in the physical packet or if the provider doing the physical is responsible? Thanks in advance!

Make sure you print out and bring the packet to your physical!

Thanks for the reply. I did print it out. They will get it where it needs to go or is there somewhere that I need to upload it to?

I think once you finish they handle the faxing or emailing of it to where it needs to go. Essentially you’re handing it off to them

When did you submit your application?

I had my primary in middle of August and secondary in before the middle of September, received an application complete email at the end of September, and an application under review email at the beginning of November. I provided an update letter in November and emailed my admissions counselor last week, but no updates from them yet.

Submitted my secondary on 08AUG and received the under review email late September.

Has anyone gone for the in-person campus visit yet/have tips on getting there? The instructions they gave are pretty vague. For example they mention a shuttle from the Medical Center Metro station (I'll be taking metro), but don't say which shuttle it is. And they mention Gate numbers, but then the somewhat grainy campus map doesn't appear to have clearly marked Gate numbers. Would appreciate any advice!

The shuttle has a big USUHS sign on it. You go out of the metro gate and then into the kiss and ride and it picks up there. Comes regularly every 10-20 mins.

I attended the in-person visit at the campus today (interviewed in October, haven't heard back yet). Overall, really good experience. I would suggest attending future sessions if you're interested in the school. It was nice being able to visit a campus, seeing as the option is not available at most schools.

Do they offer the in-person visit to all who have interviewed?
You get one this morning too? The date they gave me was for 1/13.
It also happens to be in the 10-12 week post-interview window so it's got my wheels turning, or I'm probably overthinking it.
