2021-2022 University of Houston

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I found out why it is so hard to get an interview or acceptance here. They just accept a few students they really like and clone them!

Just in case this wasn't already obvious, this is a joke.
I'm glad I wrote about my openness to cloning in my secondary.

Thank you, @McBainers for sharing the secondary prompts!

2021-2022 University of Houston Secondary Questions (slightly different from last year)

Section 1a (Yes or no questions with 300 Characters to explain that experience)
I have prior experience in a primary care setting
I have prior experience in a medical practice or social service for an underserved area
I have prior experience in community or public health

Section 2
Describe any employment, family or other obligations that impacted your education that are NOT already indicated in your TMDSAS application. (750 characters,
optional)

3. Describe up to 3 of your activities/life experiences that align with our mission. Explain how they might demonstrate a commitment to underserved communities. The examples you select must be included in TMDSAS primary application. Go to the UH College of Medicine missionfor more information. (1500 character limit)

Good luck to everyone applying!

Interview feedback:
When answering the second question, would it be okay to address the trend in my grades? Up until my senior year I had some family related situations and personal illness that impacted my grades. But I was also able to establish an upward trend in my last 60 hours after completing a post-baccalaureate program.

Yes, I think that’s what’ they mean by family obligations impacting your education. Idk the general advice on personal illness disclosure, but if it wasn’t a psychiatric one, I’m sure that’s fine too.

Hi, I was wondering if you completed the MMI when you applied and remember what it was like for U of H?

As far as I know, they will still do a MMI.
I can not reveal any questions as I signed a NDA. A quick google search will yield many sample MMI questions—grab a friend and do a mock interview with a timer.
There are a series of stations in which you’ll answer a question. Prepare with writing down your narratives in advance and weave in your experiences.
Hope that helps!

How long were you MMI's and did you leave any time for them to ask you questions? Thank you :)

I don’t recall to be frank. I think it was the standard time given for typical MMI stations.
Yes there is time for them to ask you follow up questions.

Can anyone explain simply how the match system works?
There is a thorough explanation and videos about it on TMDSAS web page The TMDSAS Match

also, @psychaspiring if you are an OOS applicant, you do not participate in the TMDSAS Match, but admission offers may start on or after October 15, 2021 and be made on a rolling basis to OOS applicants after that.

Cool, will check it out. I’m IS btw, so I will definitely see what that’s all about

There are short and long versions of it and at this time you just need to know the following:

1. If you have more than one admission but still waiting to hear from a school you want to attend, you rank the waitlist school first and your top admission after your waitlist school (you retain one admission and can be waitlisted in other places);

2. If you have no admissions but interviewed at one or more places, you rank your schools according to your preference and the schools rank their candidates using their preference and you may get an admission at one of the schools based on your ranking and if you have a higher ranked school that didnt admit you during match you can continue to be on the waitlist.

Essentially after match you are either left with one admission and some waitlists or just one admission you really like and you are done or you can be still waiting for an admission.

I just realized interviews for UH only begin in September. Their website also says that"all offers will be made according to the TMDSAS spring 2022 timeline."

Does this mean that UH won't participate in the October prematch?

no, go look at the timeline on TMDSAS which includes the dates for prematch offers.
With a small class I don't think prematch was a big part of their process last year.

They probably will admit 10 people are something which wont need a lot of interviews..

II this morning!!! Complete mid July

@wysdoc do you know how many this school interviewed/ accepted last year?

Im not @wysdoc but UH has typically matriculated 30 students but this year is the first year they’ll be matriculating 60. So I assume more interviews and acceptances will come out this year. I think usually schools accept double the number of the class. So if it’s a class of 60 (like UH this year) they would accept ~120 & ofc interview more than 120! But again I’m not 100% sure, just what I think

Those kinds of numbers are internal to each school, so I don’t know what they turned out. On MSAR we can see the number interviewed and the number matriculated
( class size), but we don’t get to see how many offers were made and eventually turned down to arrive at the class size number

Do you guys think it would hurt me to only put 2 activities for this question? It says up to 3.

Describe up to 3 of your activities/life experiences that align with our mission. Explain how they might demonstrate a commitment to underserved communities. The examples you select must be included in TMDSAS primary application. Go to the UH College of Medicine mission for more information. (1500 character limit)

I think that should be okay. I don't think 1500 characters is truly adequate enough to go in-depth regarding your experiences with the underserved. I only spoke about one activity that I felt would best demonstrate my commitment.

Personally, if I talked about two or more, the essay would have felt rather incomplete. I went all in on one. Who knows if that is the correct way to go about it, but that's what I did.

hey guys I have a question regarding section 1a of the secondary application. Would it look bad if I say yes to only one of the options?

I am confused on these:

I have prior experience in a primary care setting.
I have prior experience in a medical practice or social service for an underserved area.
I have prior experience in community or public health.

Is volunteering at an assisted living home or tutoring kids from disadvantaged high school considered social service?
Is leading educational activities for kids about proper hygiene and health in Thailand considered community health?

Can we "double-count" and describe two activities for any of these points?

Anyone else who has gotten an II--- I cannot find the email that talks more about the format/ amount of time we are given to brainstorm and answer each question? Does anyone have this info or know where I can find it?

Does anyone know if they accept updates?

For those who finished interviews - is the only interviewing being done via MMI and not any other one on one traditional interviews on top of MMIs?

How bad do you guys think it hurt me that I turned in my secondary a couple days past the recommended 2 week deadline?

For those of you who got an II, are you able to see the "new menu item for the video interview" on the portal mentioned in the confirmation email? It did not update for mine, so I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem.

I've read where people have submitted way past the 2 weeks and have still received an invite. So, I honestly don't think a couple days past the deadline is significant in any way.

For those who already interviewed: On my TMDSAS page, I still don't see UHCOM on my school rank preferences page. For reference, I interviewed on 8/12. Not gonna freak out about this, just wanted to see if anyone else's reference page has been updated?

Someone at the school has to go in to the school side of the TMDSAS portal after an interview day and enter the names of everyone who interviewed. They might do this in batches, so just check your TMDSAS portal once a week or so to see when schools show up.
Your rank preference list isn't due until February 2022.

Rankings are due in February 2022. Dont worry about it!
