2021-2022 Waitlist Support Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Only send one (to a school that doesn't matter to you).
That way you lose nothing. Additional schools can be added later. They will be delivered within one business day.
You can always work on secondaries.
Hopping on this question. Just to make sure I'm understanding this correctly: If I'm retaking, I should submit one primary application (May 31) so that AMCAS verifies on time, then wait for my new score to come back (which would be pretty late, August 1) and submit the rest of my primary applications while working on my secondaries (and then submit all my secondaries quickly)? Or submit all my primary applications with my old score (May 31), submit only one secondary with my old score and then submit the rest of my secondaries after my new score comes back (if my score comes back august 1 wouldn't that be pretty late for secondaries)? I don't think you meant the latter of that option, but just wanted to clarify.

Is this just to save money? If in a hypothetical world money wasn't an issue, would there be any harm in submitting all my primaries at once, and then waiting to submit my secondary application with my new score (since they won't evaluate my application without my secondary submitted anyway)? Or sending out some secondaries with my old score and then updating with my new score later? August seems late to send out secondaries. One issue for me this past cycle was sending out applications late.

The use of a throwaway school is to shorten the interval between your receipt of MCAT scores and the submission of applications to thoughtfully selected schools. If you want the schools to see your new score before deciding your fate, you would be wise not to submit an application until you know the score yourself. Schools are within their rights to screen you without waiting for a pending score.

Saving cash is an incidental benefit to this method. The main reason is to make use of the time between taking the MCAT and receiving the score. Also, you will have a much better idea of the right strategy when you know your score.

Sending out complete applications in August is not "late." Beginning the process in August is.

Thank you so much! This clarified a lot of things for me. Super appreciative of your help and for your thoughtfully written out response.

Edit for follow up question: So by screening, do you mean that even if schools send an applicant their secondaries, they already have decided their fate based on their stats? So even if the applicants submits a secondary it probably won't do much? (Not that an applicant would know, and I know they should submit anyway). Last cycle I received all secondaries with my old score, but they probably had already decided my fate without seeing my supplemental essays right?

Well shoot might as well jump on the manifestation train. Manifesting an A from 3 WLs we've all made it this point so far, we've made it through worse, and we will get through this. 🙏🙏🙏

I've been feeling pretty down since my Post-II R and really need some good news next week. 4 WL and I am manifesting one of them will become an A next week!!

Most secondaries are sent with little or no human screening.
If, at the time a human reviews your application, they do not think you should be interviewed, you could be removed from the applicant pool for that school.
If you would prefer that the new MCAT score be part of your initial human evaluation, wait until that score has posted.

I didn't realize there was a waitlist support thread. I was in the 4 waitlist no A boat on Monday, but finally got two A's this week. It can happen. I'm leaving one of those spots open for someone here hopefully. Sending good vibes your way. Don't give up.

Ah congrats! Where did you leave the acceptance?

4 WLs with movement at all 4 schools happening that I’m not a part of. Feels like I’m just bottom tier WL everywhere honestly. Feels terrible, somehow I just know I’m not getting in
I was prepped to reapply and writing my essays again, but honestly I feel torn about getting these As. My first choice schools all rejected, probably because my app was late (submitted late August). Part of me is really sure that I could have gotten into my first choice schools if I gave it another year and applied on time, but of course it would be crazy to not accept an A. I'm not going to complain of course and I'm thrilled to get in anywhere but those feelings of "what if" are still there.

Seriously though, even if it doesn't happen this cycle, you can take what you learned from this cycle and really hone your application and your odds are that much better. This whole process is soul-crushing, but I firmly believe you can surprise yourself next year and get something you didn't anticipate. Don't give up.

Geisinger. It's a great school and the first one I interviewed with back in January, but my other A just had a few more opportunities we couldn't pass up. It felt weird declining the A.
Declining an acceptance is an honor, be proud that you get to!! Must feel amazing

It's surreal. I'm not going to keep harping on it because I know how hard it is on the waitlist and nobody wants to focus on watching others getting A's. Just suffice to say that I'm manifesting hard for all of you and I know for a fact that there are still spots out there. But even if you have to reapply next year, there are things you've learned about this slog that will serve you well and help you land your dream school next cycle. That's a positive here that's hard to see, but the fact that you got interviews at all is a sign that you're good enough to make the cut. The rest is probability.

It would be great to get off one of them lol. But needless to say, we’re all happy to see people get acceptances here because you were once in our position and it just gives us hope that we could have the same outcome!

worst feeling is seeing movement at your top WL school and you aren't part of it 🙁
This is exactly where I’m at…. Like someone else on this thread said, I feel like I’m on the bottom tier WL. The more movement I see, the less hopeful I get. I just wish they wouldn’t have WLed me if this were even the case and give me false hope 😭

Never been one to believe in manifesting, but I'll try anything at this point. My first cycle I had 0 interviews, this time around I have 3 WL and I'm extremely nervous and starting to get really anxious about having to apply a third time... please universe give me a win this week!

Well said friend, I fully agree with you on that. Also, I’m really glad that you got off two WLs, congratulations!

Is it too late to submit a LOI? I was thinking about sending one in to my top choice Monday morning, but not sure if it’ll be a bad or desperate look coming a week late/after movement started

I was going to send one next week too, I was planning for Tuesday ( i imagine everyone is sending some sort of email during the weekend) I feel like better early than too late but i’m sure one of the adcoms might have a better perspective

I know the PTE deadline has passed and waitlist movement should start by now, but the med school I was waitlisted at said that movement typically starts for them in June. Does anyone know why that might be?

Hey guys I'm really confused and honestly just looking for some advice. I am currently on five waitlists: Buffalo, Downstate, NYMC, NYU Long Island and Netter. When should I seriously start considering reapplying? Do I have a good chance of getting off of these waitlists? I felt all of my interviews at these schools went really well and am honestly confused as to why I ended up on the WL. Any advice would be appreciated <3

Just a story of hope. I applied MD/PhD and got 3 II. These interviews resulted in 2 WL and 1 R. One of the schools told me it was more likely than not that I would get a spot, but the other school told me there was very little waitlist movement. I was banking on the first school, but they just kept saying they hadn't seen movement yet each time I emailed and I was getting very stressed because MD/PhD programs start in June. Then suddenly a week ago the school that told me there was little waitlist movement accepted me after zero communication from them since January. There is hope! People are jumping from program to program and there is still a chance for new acceptances!

The timing is actually better now.

Do school send out offers in rounds or as spots open up?
feels like it varies from school to school. I think each school takes time to figure out their WL spots post commit to enroll + goes from there. Some are quicker than others! I think most WL movement occurs in may, and less and less happens until classes start. I hope you have an A!! I went through WL szn last year without one and it was very difficult 🙁

What is the latest I could retake MCAT for next cycle and not be too late? I feel like adcoms give reapplicants a little leeway in being a tad behind. Looking at July 16, July 29, or August 5.

When do we need to accept the offer after getting acceptance from waitlist? 2 weeks or less?
