2022-2023 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For UTMB, it is closed.
For that part where they give you the opportunity to sell yourself, what is it like? Do they ask any questions or just tell you to give a pitch lol

They tell you to freestyle (essentially). The person is blind to everything except your name. Just try to sell your soul to the school. Discuss your research, volunteer, what you can offer to the school, give updates, or say something that wasn't on your application.

Met who I believe to be skeptastic today and felt like I was meeting a celebrity lol. Interview day has been fun so far, it looks like a great group of candidates
I am impressed that you were able to post on SDN during the interview day lol. You are the true champion!

What made you think it was me?

Hey @skeptastic and @boomertexas
I like that you are encouraging each other so much!
If you want to delve into how you picked each other out of the crowd on your interview day, I think it's better to explore that in PMs because we don't want people to do the equivalent of revealing Clark Kent's secret Superman identity.
Carry on!

I think everyone knows Clark Kent is Superman. I mean, you have to be a preschooler to not connect the dots. Yea, that hair swirl is not fooling anyone. They just choose to ignore it so Clark Kent doesn't get embarrassed and leave Metropolis where they really need him.

Also got a II this morning! LM 74.9, in-state, ORM. Application was completed 07/04.

II about 30 minutes ago! LM 74, IS, URM, application technically complete 7/28, but letters did not arrive until 8/15.

What were your Casper quartiles for those with interview? I have similar stats but Casper says I’m a sociopath…. So….
4th quartile, but I don't know how much UTMB cares about them since they use MMI, which gets at similar attributes. Maybe my assumption is wrong

I thought I had read somewhere online that they weigh heavier on Casper than other TMDSAS schools, but am not sure if that is true or not.

UTMB had said in the past that they used the CASPer as one more piece of information to consider, and they looked at it after a person was interviewed during the committee discussions on candidates.
There is a new director of admissions this year, so the order of considering information about you may have changed. I just looked over their admissions page and saw that they now want CASPer results and all other supporting documents turned in before you are reviewed.

Unfortunately, I am the latter. I have received an interview from another Casper requiring school, but will just have to wait and see if this is a metric that will screen me out of UTMB.
I hope not. It is relatively new, and I think it is ridiculous to screen out someone's portfolio based on a 2-hour test where typing speed is a significant factor.

THIS. I keep saying that CASPer is a horrible test for folks who struggle with typing. I'm actually set to take CASPer this weekend and but currently have a wrist injury and it's in a brace. My typing speed is significantly impaired. For folks where English may not be their native language or who may any other technological limitations, it feels kind of unfair. At least give alternative options like video or audio recording? But I digress.

They have a video portion on the new exam, but if I remember correctly that part is not scored. I understand why they want to use the test as part of admissions, but I find it hard for such a test to truly gauge an applicant. Especially when it is described as a test that requires no studying, just familiarization of the formatting. Preparation and understanding what the scorers grade on can make a lot of difference. I believe MMI in interviews are a much better measure, but what reasoning goes on behind adcoms closed doors could be anyones guess.

Hey guys! Literally just made this account to maybe give other people some hope, I am so surprised and grateful to have the opportunity to interview!
II received this morning. 508 MCAT, 3.85 GPA, 4th quartile casper, IS, ORM. App completed on 7/20. I have some pretty unique ECs. I hope this helped someone and don't give up you can do this 😊.

lol we have almost exactly the same stats, I'm waiting to hear back from this school though 🙁

Congratulations to all with IIs today. what interview dates are available to you?

4th quartile! Keep waiting though, and listen to the rest of the people in this thread. Casper is… interesting.

I was wondering what the icebreaker was at the interview? Also for the "sell yourself" part, was it just two 8 minute interviews to freestyle and talk about yourself?

something about favorite ice cream flavors (I’m pretty sure our admissions decisions aren’t based around whether you like mint chocolate chip or not though) and yeah I pretty much monologued for like 3 mins and then just had a normal conversation with the interviewer for the rest of the time

Probably weeding out pistachio enthusiasts
