Post II Waitlist 🙁 does anyone know how much movement typically occurs? Or if they have a tiered waitlist? Really tough news being in state, but gonna send a letter of intent anyways (though being waitlisted this quickly after interview doesn't seem like a good sign)

I interviewed 9/24 and was WL early January, seems like generally this year they're doing long ish turnaround cause they're doing somewhat less rolling? based on what they've told other people in this thread... but some people got the A in like 2-3 weeks so just depends!
 
guys i interviewed in october and i still haven't heard back. i'm soo scared that this is a rejection. should i email them and ask them if they have my decision or is this normal? anyone else in the same boat as me

Not LEAD but PURCH, I got the A 7 weeks post interview, but I know other people that interviewed around the same date got accepted a few weeks before/after me. I think for the tracks in particular it takes them a bit longer because it has to go through 2 committees

I would advise against emailing for updates because you'll probably get a very generic "decisions will be released by April". Do you have any meaningful updates you could put in an update letter?

Got it thank you!! For the main campus, that’s considered independently of my lead interview correct? Like it doesn’t impact my chances?

Hi everyone — I’m an accepted student to Chan, and it is currently my top choice. That said, I recently came across news regarding alleged animal abuse in research labs on campus that I found deeply disturbing.


I’m planning to reach out to the appropriate research oversight board and members of the admissions/community leadership who welcomed me to the school to better understand what steps are being taken to address this. I wanted to see if anyone else here feels similarly or would be interested in doing the same.

I don’t think we can or should really answer about the details of kind of questions - it’s unfortunately just not fair to any other applicants to give away that info, plus we’re told explicitly not to. I will say the questions were not too difficult, general MMI prep should definitely do you well. Best of luck!!
 
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could answer this question (it might be more tailored to current UMASS Chan students but any insight is appreciated). I’ve recently been accepted and as of now, I’m more interested in pursuing a surgical residency. I was wondering if due to UMass Chan’s extremely heavy emphasis on primary care resources for those who want to pursue other specialties are limited? Thank you for your time!

Nationally, about 11% of US MD seniors match into surgical specialties, surgical specialty match rate has been around 18-22% at UMass up to 2021. Manually calculating the rate for last year gave me around 12% but might have miscounted. So doesn't seem to put you at a big disadvantage compared to the general population.

Im curious as to what this statistic actually means. Does this mean that 12% of the class matched into surgical specialties? Because if so I feel like that statistic then doesn’t really mean much. It could be that majority of their class just really wanted to pursue primary care specialties. I guess the statistic that would offer real insight into my question is what percentage of students who wanted to do surgery matched (but I’m sure this is not publicly available). But then again, my interpretation of what you’re saying could be completely wrong.

Yeah, you're totally right that it's not perfect, we have no clue what the wanted to match->actually matched rate was, but I think comparing the rate to the national average at least gives you a ballpark that UMass are not at a disadvantage compared to other schools. If you trust the data in the screenshot (2009-2021) as being indicative, then it would appear that UMass students are actually more competitive than most.

I think it's more due to the fact that UMASS is great for primary care, so people that are already interested in primary care are more inclined to go there. Different classes might also have people more interested in surgery one year, or anesthesia the next year. Looking at the match list for the past few years, it seems like there have always been students able to match into some pretty competitive specialties like neurosurgery or vascular surgery
 
Any other WL get the small group email? Anyone know what this is about or was it sent to everyone? Seems like a strange time in the cycle to send it out but I will absolutely take whatever I can get
 
Does anyone know if Rs have been given out yet? I spoke to admissions and they said it’s rolling so if you haven’t heard back, you’re being actively considered but not sure if that’s true this late into the cycle?

Lots of R's have gone out and they do tend to II even in February, but obviously a lot less. If you made it this far just know your application was a good fit and sadly, at the end of the day, it really is just a numbers game and there is so little to differentiate applicants at this point in the cycle.

Oh ok I low key thought this meant my application was sitting in an R pile but I guess I’ll send an update and see like you said you never know even though now it’s a slim chance. I thought they sent out all II in January but didn’t know there were some even if few February invites

Nah, we probably are in the R pile now, but they do grace a few of us with a late II just prove it wasn't really an R pile lol

Is this true?? been seeing it around but not sure if directly from adcoms or more speculation. Certainly what it feels like, nonetheless.

This may be true, but there are a lot of MA residents. They can’t accept all of them, so I don’t think that one individual not receiving an interview even thought they’re instate can be translated that broadly. Unfortunately given the amount of applications, being an MA resident is not enough.
 
Ya I get u. I wonder how many schools actually r still considering applicants and how many r using that as a cop out but have many ppl in an either silent R or R at the very end pile lol
