A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm 10 Verbal, 8 Bio, 6 physical. I have A's and B's in my Bio classes but I got a C in Physics I and a B in Physics II. My sciences gpa is a 3.3, my cumulative is a 3.03. I go to a liberal arts school so we take alot of extra nonmajor classes to be "well rounded".

Everyone takes a lot of non-major classes. A 3.03 is abysmally low. Try next year.

That's a typo. I have a 3.2 cumulative and a 3.3 sciences. I just spent a large amount of money on AACOMAS, I'm going for gold my man. I would think that so many consecutive generations of my family being DO's would make the difference. Plus my EC's

See, the thing is nothing you do matters if your GPA/MCAT are too low. If your stats are too low, ADCOMs don't look at your ECs or your legacy or anything. You're putting way too much value into legacy.. It might make a difference, but it won't make the difference.

I'm not saying you won't get in. I am saying though, that if you get in, you probably would've gotten in even without legacy.

I don't follow. You're saying a 24 MCAT and a 3.2 gpa are too low yet I could still get in, but not because of being a legacy. So then why would I?

Chances are you won't get into AZCOM because your stats are too low. However, people with low stats get in every year.

I didn't apply to AZCOM so it works out. I did, however, apply to KCOM to be a third generation legacy and the 7th member of my family to attend... surely that matters! It's not like my grades are BAD and my MCAT wasn't terrible... if people get in with stats worse than mine, then I don't know why they wouldn't take me. I've always understood that DO schools, KCOM especially, care greatly about things like that.

sorry to break it to you, but unless your family members make a large donation or are sitting on the committee, your "legacy" isn't going to make up for your MCAT, which according to the averages is terrible. Your MCAT wouldn't have been a problem if your GPA was higher but it is also also below average. Apply if your finances allow you to. This whole application process truly is a gamble and you never know what the outcome will be unless you apply. Maybe you can check out last year's under dog thread and see how many people with similar stats as you got in. You can even PM them for advice. I am not trying to discourage you but giving you honest, non-sugar coated advice. I hope you don't take it as a personal attack towards you. wish you the best of luck. :xf:

Sorry, I meant KCOM, not AZCOM.

Hey Everyone

One of the science professors that will be submitting an LOR for me just emailed me and needs to know my 10 character document ID to upload a letter to Interfolio - I'm assuming that this is an Interfolio ID?

Also, since I'm going to need to make an Interfolio account, when it makes me choose a plan, there is the $19 for "LOR's and credentials", but then there is the free option for "submit LORS" - are you guys doing the free one or do we need to pay the $19? I know that when you send them you pay money but I'm just not sure how this all works. Anyone who may know, could you please fill me in on how this works? Thank you!!!

You should probably work on those reading comprehension skills.

The free one is for letter writers... "Easily write LORs, keep track of what you've written and send them to us in any format.

Also, once you do create an account, you'll request LORs via Interfolio. Interfolio will create a PDF/email for you to send to your letter writers and it will include instructions on how to submit.

Wow, you should really work on your politeness - I'm just as busy as everyone else who is applying and found it easier to ask someone on here rather than reading a bunch of information (sorry if it spelled it out in 1 sentence) because people are usually respectful, unlike you. Thanks for the info though, douchebag

Plus I didn't want to drop the $19 if I didn't need to. Sorry I asked

Yeah, you have to get the one for $19 and then it's $6 to send a letter to each school.

FYI: your question would probably have been answered more politely on the main DO applicant LOR thread, instead of posted on each individual school threads. Actually, it probably has already been answered there, so just searching through the threads would probably have been more beneficial. Everyone on these threads just want to hear about interview invites 😉 lol

Yeah, I briefly searched for it. Just in a big rush today because it's move-out/move-in time and things are hectic so I went for my easiest route

Right. I state a fact, that your reading comprehension is lacking, and then you call me a douchebag after telling me to work on my politeness. 👍

Hey I appreciate your honest assessment, that's why I asked. I think I'm gonna be okay though, I've been calling admissions for schools all day and they seem to think my cold stats are good enough. "We're looking for the whole person" has been the general consensus. At least 3 have said point blank they suspect I'll get an interview... but I haven't called KCOM yet!

Really? What schools are you calling? I emailed a bunch of schools back in May and the general consensus was that my MCAT (33) might make up for my GPA (3.2).

MD or DO?? So far I've called VCOM, CUSOM, MUSOM, PCOM, LECOM, UNECOM... it's all about DO schools my man they go for the holistic approach, whether it be for patients or applicants! Haha. My EC's got pretty good responses... but ya'll may be correct about the legacy part, I never got a direct comment about that.

Wow seriously?! I'm gonna go ahead and say as far as DO schools go you're getting in somewhere. Fo shizzle. 👍

Clearly MedPR's point stands...🙄

DO. If I wasn't a URM I wouldn't even be applying MD. GPA is way too low and MCAT is just a tad above average. I know DO schools have a more holistic admissions process, but stats are still important. Good luck to you.

Yea seriously. 3.2 is pretty low (no offense to others with 3.2 or lower). I hope you're right.

I don't think it is. I don't take offense to it (since my stats are clearly listed on my MDApps). I guess because I went to a very highly ranked undergraduate college. If you're getting a 3.2 from a community college or something, then yes it's pretty abysmal. I'm just letting you know your MCAT is way above average for all DO schools, so I think you will be fine 👍

True. Would schools consider the fact that you went to a highly ranked undergraduate college and "sort of give you a pass?" I'm not asking this in an offensive way at all, it just seems that the quality of the undergraduate school should be somewhat considered in correlation to GPA.

I agree about the 3.2 at CC. 🙂 2.65 with an upward trend from UG 2 years ago. 4.00 at CC since then.

My UG is known in the mid west for its pre-med rigor, but I don't think I'm going to get any breaks because of it. The way I look at it, a 4.0 from Harvard is valued more highly than a 4.0 from an average school, but I don't think someone from a 3.0 from Harvard gets a "pass" or a "sort of pass" just beacuse they went to Harvard.

I really wished that they did, from through my experience it doesn't seem to mean much unfortunately. I don't mean it to be offensive in any way, but I think it's hard to compare like an Ivy league school to a community college (i didn't go to an ivy league school - just saying that for the sake of comparison). Clearly, the community college course is simply going to be easier. But who knows, every adcom is different - there's no way to know what they think is important unfortunately 🙁

Sorry all, didn't mean to go off on a tangent on this thread, just complimenting MedPR on his/her MCAT score 👍

Yea, community college classes really are a joke. However, they can be very useful for MCAT prep. I retook gen chem 1 and 2 just before starting and it was my strongest MCAT topic. I almost always got 100% of the gen chem questions right on AAMCs. Make the best of every class you take. Overstudy if you have to. It's worth it.

Hey guys, so once we receive our confirmation number does that mean we're complete? or does that mean they just have all of our stuff and still processing it. When I type in that number it just says they received everything but idk if that means im officially complete. thanks

No. Read the whole email.

Your file will be considered complete when all of the following items have been received:

1. AACOMAS Application (The oldest MCAT scores we will accept are from 2009)
2. KCOM Secondary Electronic Application and $70 application fee
3. Evaluation I: Premedical Committee/Premedical Advisor/Basic Science Faculty Evaluation
4. Evaluation II: Physician Evaluation (We encourage you to include a D.O. physician evaluation/letter, but it is not required)

I did, however, apply to KCOM to be a third generation legacy and the 7th member of my family to attend... surely that matters!... I've always understood that DO schools, KCOM especially, care greatly about things like that.

Understand that while your legacy status MAY get you an interview. They will ask you why you want to be a DO and why you want to come to KCOM and why your grades and MCAT are what they are. If your only answer is that "my family are doctors and they all came here so you should take me"...I don't imagine you'll get far.

Absolutely. I decided on my own a long time ago that I wanted to be a doctor regardless of the family stuff. I don't plan to lean on the legacy part, but hey, anything to separate me from the pack I'll take. If anything it shows that I know about and subscribe to the DO philosophy because I've grown up around it

Enough legacy stuff!

Does anyone know about International students at KCOM? I got my secondary a while ago, and everything, and things seem to be on the right track, but I was wondering if there is any data available about that?

PS. good luck to everyone! KCOM and the iPads and all that fun stuff is waiting for us! :xf:

Never said I needed to work on my politeness - said you needed some help in that area. You were really asking for it, though, by being so snarky over a simple question. Seems as if you're the one who's lacking some reading comprehension. Also, if you also would have read my post a few down from my first, I was moving out of a place today and into a new one so I was pretty strapped for time. It'd make more sense if you would have read it, but you clearly didn't. Whatever, man, good luck with your process. Just don't attack someone right off the bat next time is all I'm trying to say. No reason for it

You seem to have missed the point, but we can credit that to your below average reading comprehension skills. The amount of time it would've taken to read Interfolio's blurb for yourself is much less than the time you spent spamming the same post in three different threads on SDN:

Please stop with the arguments and keep the discussion relevant.

You mentioned that detail AFTER medPR's initial reply. Are you implying that adequate reading comprehension requires psychic powers? 🙄

Hi does anyone know when we can expect to hear whether or not we have been granted an interview? Did anyone do the Early Decision program or is everyone doing regular decision?
