A.T. Still University Kirksville (KCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
can any current students tell me about the health insurance at KCOM? Do you purchase it through the school or are you just expected to go out and shop for it yourself? Also, can you tell me why they budget 3,674 for health/life/auto insurance for each year? That seems high to me but maybe I'm confused.

I withdrew my invite for a November 1st interview today after getting accepted at Tulane. Maybe someone here with a later interview wants to call KCOM to see if they can take my spot?

Hmm, haven't heard back yet and I interviewed last Friday. Can't help wondering if I'm getting a tough letter in the mail instead of a phone call.

Interview invite!! 12/6

What r the best places to stay for a decent price?

This is my first interview, anyone interviewing November 15th?

Rejected today Pre interview...

I'm expecting the same result for me... Been complete 2 months with no word.

I submitted my app to SOMA and KCOM. SOMA was a rejection. I am thinking maybe KCOM turns out the same. I called them up and my app will be reviewed by ADCOM next Tueday. We'll see what happens. I was bummed for the SOMA one, I think SOMA has a great program

Luckily I have an interview this week at SOMA. Honestly, if I get accepted to KCUMB I'll withdraw from all other schools except KCOM, just because I have several friends there who all love it and chose it over several other schools so I'd like to see what it's all about. Plus it's a great school. Plus I could come back to Utah for my 3rd and 4th years!

hmm that's weird becasue people have been getting ii's on random days of the week.

I got my II e-mail/call Tuesday. The call was first, the e-mail showed up late in the evening.

ooh okay thanks! I wasn't complete until October 18th, so I'm hoping to hear something sooon..🙂...hopefully...

any other interview experiences worth noting? it sounds pretty intense with 3 back to back interviews....

Hey everyone,
For those of you who have been accepted to KCOM class of 2017 there is a facebook page that is up! Here is the link:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/KCOM2017/

If you can't find it or are having trouble let me know. I'm in contact with KCOM about the page as there have been a few issues already. Again Congrats to all who have been accepted! I look forward to meeting my fellow classmates!!

Don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds -- the interviewers are very nice people, and you don't have to do much waiting around between the interviews.

Interviewed October 1st, got in October 13th! I'm going there, no doubt. Godspeed to everyone!

The budget is entirely an estimation - if you are still on your parents' health plan, for example (you can be in some states), then you can cut that out of your budget. Basically, when they outline a budget for you, they're thinking of the max you'll spend in each area so that you have something to go off of for your own budget and loans. You can absolutely tweak it if that seems high for you. I know I personally didn't spend nearly $3,000 in that area.

As for health insurance specifically, I'd have to have someone double check me, but I don't believe you can get it through the school - you have to go find it yourself. There is a link on the website that lists all of the requirements, and if you have questions they're very helpful.

I was intimidated when I first heard about the 3 interviews, but honestly, they were all extremely relaxed. My advice would be to know your application really well before the interview.

Thanks for sharing! I'm really nervous about the interview style here actually 🙁

Yeah don't stress about the actual interview. Besides the basic questions asked in any interview, it's a very casual conversation in which my interviewers did a majority of the talking.

Yep. I did feel that each interviewer was roughly evaluating something different about you. The one with the faculty interviewer seemed to be interested in how I performed as a student and the stuff that I did in college (ECs and clinical experiences). My other interviewer was a physician and I felt that he was inquiring into my aspirations as a DO and so his questions were centered around my clinical experiences and what I thought of different medically related topics. My last interview with the counselor was about everything in general. But, all of them were really laid-back, low-stress sessions.

That's interesting. Actually a really good way to interview in my opinion. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Don't be nervous! I interviewed here a few weeks ago (sorry for the delay, new to SDN) and it was really laid back. Each of my interviewers was really familiar with my application and basically would say, "So I see you have leadership experience with this..." and allow me to elaborate. Just be prepared to explain how each of your experiences has prepared you to be an awesome med student/doctor.

Another thing I really appreciated about my interview is they really did a nice job matching me up with interviewers with whom I had something in common. I am interested in women's healthcare, and they matched me up with an ob/gyn clinician. I also have research experience in microbiology and my other interviewer was a Micro/Immuno professor.

One question I got asked by all three interviewers is if I am prepared for life in Kirksville and how I would adjust to the rural lifestyle. I think they were concerned because I am from Chicago, so I would definitely be a big change. Not sure if they'll ask you that, but I'd be prepared with an answer anyway 🙂

That sounds about right lol.

Yep!

I also agree that they tried to match the interviewers with your profile and application. This basically means you can have more common things to talk about but it also means you need to know your application solid. Be prepared to talk about anything you put on it.

Excited for my interview next Thursday! It'll be my first! Anyone else going to be there?

Just got the call! ACCEPTED. interviewed on 11/02! This is my first one so I'm super excited!

Missed a call and almost didn't call back because I was like "oh no, it's almost six already..." but then I remembered I'man hour ahead right now. Glad I figured that out because when I called back I was informed that I got accepted!

If anyone has an interview date later than they'd like, you can call the admissions office and get your name on a list of people they call to interview in case other interviewers back out last minute. I did this because my interview date was scheduled for Nov 30th (this was the earliest date when I signed up beginning of Oct). Since I am within driving distance to KCOM, I got on the list and ended up interviewing Oct 12! Even though I only had five days notice til my interview day, it was definitely worth it. The lady I talked to on the phone was really happy to do this and it helps them out so all spots can be filled on interview days.

Got my acceptance call five days after interviewing!! 🙂 Good luck to everyone!
