Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some input on either Brown or UCLA Med School. I went to UCLA for undergrad and have all my family in So Cal, but that doesn't mean I need to go there. I'm on the East Coast (in DC) this year and doing HIV/AIDS non-profit work. The decision will obviously be based on a lot of things, but I was hoping to see if anyone had anything to say.

Thanks!

I assume you don't have a SO in LA then. If so I think it depends where you want to live when your older. If you want to come back to Cali (which I believe everyone that grows up here does) then I'd say go OOS for 4 years. Be a crazy fun new experience and then you can be sure on what coast you want to live in.

That's a pretty sweet dilemma you have there 👍. I would personally rather get out and see other places, but UCLA is top notch (so is Brown in my opinion), and perhaps it would be much more cost effective if you're IS?

Wow big lie. Charlie has never left Philly in his entire life and doesn't want to either. 😉
👍 to the best show on television.

I would pick Brown. I love UCLA too, but having done undergrad there (and absolutely loved it) its just cool to try something new for a couple of years. you can always come back for residency. I feel med school is THE time to try living in a new place because regardless of where you go, you can easily come back for residency if you don't like the location. After med school you'll probably want to settle down in one location (wherever you end up doing your residency).

Looks like the term "top notch" is getting used pretty broadly these days...

These "you can't go wrong with either choice posts are utterly useless for the op. Go to Ucla.

ucla unless you really loved brown a ton more and/or have personal/financial reasons to go there instead.

Unless your definition of "top notch" is restricted to #1-3 on USNWR then I'd say it's reasonable to call any school in the top 10% "top notch". UCLA is in or very close to (#13 in USNWR) such a level.

Which is probably why he said UCLA>Brown...

OP: UCLA unless you have an unmentioned, compelling reason to do otherwise.

I wasn't talking about UCLA not being top notch.

I'm not arguing against your point but I'm wondering what your basis is for saying Brown isn't top notch. Do you have an objective reason or is it rankings (please don't say it's rankings). I've seen a match list year after year that matches to the best schools in the northeast. Again, not arguing just curious.

Westwood vs Providence? Really?

Go to UCLA and save your money too. You'll appreciate the warm, nice weather and the whole SoCal mentality a lot, lot more 1 year in.

Then refer to my obvious qualifier "in my opinion".

I guess it just depends on your context. I use the word "top notch" to refer to departments that are at least in the conversation when one talks about the best in the country, or perhaps in terms of research. Brown has $33M in research funding, below such research powerhouses as the university of new mexico and the university of louisville. UCLA's department of neurology by itself has as much NIH funding as Brown does, and two departments at UCLA have more (internal medicine has almost 3 times more)

UCLA has among the top departments in a half-dozen different specialities. I've never even heard of Brown being mentioned except when discussing the most malignant places to do certain specialties. If it wasn't in the ivy league you would have never heard of it. The two places simply aren't comparable.

go to the second look program at each school, get as much info on each as much as you can, and then decide. each has its advantages and disadvantages. in the end, it's a gut call

for what it is worth, i go to Brown and I love it here.

this is a freakin no brainer.....

UCLA>>>>>>>>>>Brown

only thing Brown really has over UCLA is an undergrad name. in the medical community UCLA>Brown in every way.
