Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Campbell is a great school! I really liked it when I visited there. The faculty is always available to you, the students are super friendly, the campus is small and pretty (but the Medical school is not attached to the regular campus.. they have their own campus and it is really beautiful). There isn't much to do there but it has a lot of great nature surrounding it. In talking to the dean of the school, I really like how they are integrating some sort of a international program into the medical program where each year, students can go to a different country for a short time and experience the healthcare programs there and get experience providing healthcare in those other countries. That is one of the best things I loved about this program. Whoever gets in here will really love it... in my opinion anyway.

Does anyone know if you have to complete all your prereq before applying here or is it okay if you have 1 remaining prereq in progress? I tired to check the website but it didn't mention any info about it.

I have a 3.2 sGPA 3.59 cGPA and a 21 with a lot of EC; Do I have a shot here?

I would retake the MCAT and get at least a 25 for a chance here with those stats. Also, apply as early as possible as I'm sure you have heard already. Anything below a 24 decreases your chances strongly for admission to a DO program. I'm not saying that people don't get in with lower scores, but they are the exception to the rule. I wish you good luck though! With some hard work moving from a 21 to a 25 can be done on short notice.

I'm pretty sure you should be fine. Try and make a note of it somewhere on your application if given the option to. You can always email Joy Henderson or Mattie Bendall as they are very helpful and nice!

I couldn't agree more. Once you visit or interview here, you realize just how much you belong. The admission and faculty are top notch and some of the nicest people I have ever met!

That question came up when we had a group session with all the big wigs and they said to still apply as long as it is completed by the time of matriculation and it is indicated on your application that you are taking that pre-req. Also just call them they are very nice... you can also talk to shelly if she is and she is very helpful .. good luck 🙂 :luck:

Crap! Do you mean it has to be indicated on the application that I plan to take pre-req courses for them to even consider me?

Do you know if I can edit this on AACOMAS or should I contact the school directly?

Update on AACOMAS and they will notify the school of the updated form. If you have any problems or are worried, also contact the school. But don't rely on an email for them for important details like this

Yeah, he's probably right. I would call them up. You don't want something small like this to mess things up.

Okay. Thanks. I'm going to contact AACOMAS to update my intended pre-reqs. Then I'll contact the school to tell them about my new updated application.

I received the email yesterday also. And I admit that it made me jump up and do a happy dance! It means we are there. We are finally at the point when all of this hard work comes together. I am impressed with this school and its mission. My husband is military so Ft. Bragg being close by is a plus. My 5.5yo daughter surfs and the beach being 1.5 hrs away is huge! I tried looking up houses for rent in that area and can't find any. Does someone have an idea about cost of living and the elementary schools? Good luck!

Got the letter last week as well! I think it arrived on the 21st, which makes me think that Campbell is really on top of things. I love that!! My AACOMAS didn't have the release dates listed yet either.
It feels good to get this show on the road. Good luck everyone through this application season!!

I hear the cost of living is decent in that area, not too expensive.

Scriblet42 - retake that MCAT pronto. Your sGPA is a little low and with a 21 it will be hard to get a solid look at any of the DO schools, at least without outrageous ECs. Even showing a solid jump, say 21 ---> 26 will show that you can conquer and improve. Try exam krackers, its a great study set and will bolster your score.

I'm afraid I can't speak specifically to your question about elementary schools quality. However, I am aware that we do have quite a few students who have spouses and kids and some are living right in the communities surrounding the school while a few chose to live a little closer to Raleigh in the cities of Cary or Apex or even Raleigh itself. Rest assured there are ample options for you choose from. Cost of living is great in the area around CUSOM (Buies Creek, Lillington, Dunn, Fuquay Varina, etc) and average in Cary and Apex (not bad not great). You will likely have trouble finding things online for housing but once you are physically in the area there are an abundance of options and our class will have paved the way in exploring all options so feel free to ask around on interview day, if and when that comes! Good luck!

Matriculating (MS1) here in July for the inaugural class,
feel free to ask questions, concerns, input, etc on here or message me. Ill be around the forum regularly at least until classes start.... after that, ill see what I can do!

Good luck!

Do you happen to know if they require a LOR from a DO? I have 2 LORs from MDs that both had to go into my committee letter (my schools committee requires 5 LORs for 1 composite) I am desperately trying to find a DO in my area to shadow now but I live in rural suburbs of GA and so far I've only found 4 DOs within my area and none take student shadows... Continuing the search...

once your application is submitted, I would talk to them about your situation. they do require one, but the staff is very willing to help/accommodate, so it couldn't hurt to ask.

Ok I will def keep searching in the meantime- it's crazy DOs seem to be everywhere in some states and nowhere to be found in others- this prbly explains why GA only had 230 applicant a to DO schools last year nobody has heard of it! Anyways thanks for the heads up ill start searching for people farther from home

I couldn't remember their policy but according to the website you should be fine. Of course if you find a DO by all means get the letter. In my perspective having an MD LOR may not hurt you but having a DO letter absolutely could help you!

" The first letter must be from either an osteopathic physician (D.O.) or an allopathic physician (M.D.). Although a letter from an osteopathic physician is not required, it is strongly recommended. "

I heard that CUSOM has a 3.2 c/sGPA requirement....Is that a hard and fast requirement? I would like to apply with 3.15 cGPA, 3.35 sGPA and 25+ MCAT based on AAMC practice score so far but I don't know whether or not they are willing to bend that requirement...

Just received the Secondary Application email! Check your inboxes!

+1!!

I am thrilled at the prospect of going to med school here!! I have family and friends in Raleigh!!

My cgpa was a 3.14 so i was worried about getting autoscreened, just got the secondary invite! Sgpa 3.68 mcat 31

Is it just me or does the link to the secondary not work??

I cannot get the link to the secondary to work. Emailed the school. Anyone else have this trouble?

Ok see Cane posted when I did. Hope they fix it soon!

If you are also having trouble please email them too. They may think its just a glitch I am having and not realize that it seems to be system wide.

Just received an email that they are checking with IT about it right now.

Just received this email:

" Good Afternoon CUSOM Applicants,

It has been brought to our attention the Secondary Application link is currently unavailable. We ask for your patience while we fix the problem. I will contact everyone by e-mail when the link is up and running. Thanks again for reaching out to us and we appreciate your understanding.

Have a good day "

Hey guys,
did anyone receive an email saying they were going to bring your application to the Pre-Screen committee for an in-depth review? 😕

Did your GPA fall below the cutoff? Typically this means you didn't meet the min criteria for the school but the good thing about CUSOM is they don't automatically trash your application and instead review your entire application for special consideration.
Don't see this as a negative, be grateful for a second look.

secondary sent in and paid! can't wait to see if I get that interview!

secondary essays are:
What are the top five qualities you feel you bring to CUSOM that would enhance the overall climate of our school?
Osteopathic medicine parallels allopathic medicine but has principles and practices that are distinct.
Which of these principles and practices are of greatest interest to you and why?

Good luck to everyone submitting their secondaries! Hopefully, I will see you all on campus next year!

The secondary is still not working for me? it prompts me for a username and password? Also, the link for the fee doesn't work. Says I dont have access... This happening to anyone else?

The login information is in the email invitation for the secondary and can be found under the link. I can't help you with the fee link. I am using ie9 and it works for me.

The word document format of the secondary is a little annoying making it look nice lol. How is everyone doing it because its impossible to write over the underlines.

I just typed what I wanted and then delete enough of the "lines" to make up the space

Does the secondary come in PDF format? Mine did last year, and I used FoxIt PDF Reader to fill in everything since Adobe didn't allow filling in the boxes, made life so much easier.

It comes in word, but you can convert it with PDF creator or one similar.

I am applying here this cycle and I have a 3.86 overall gpa and a 3.78 science and scored a 23 6ps9v8bs on my mcat. I am a Hispanic Texas resident.
