Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anybody have a list of core rotation sites? I know they showed us during the interview but I cant remember any of the hospital on it.

Not sure if this has already been addressed in this thread, but could any of you current med students share some info about the types of research opportunities offered at CUSOM? What are most of the OMS-1s doing and where?

During my interview, I specifically asked about research opportunities and my interviewer stated that research wasn't available at this time and that there was no time for it in the first two years anyway.

the day I went to interview they made a very big deal out of discussing the national ranking board passage rates for campbell's other professional programs (pharmacy/law/etc) which were higher than duke in at least one of those cases. more than one person mentioned specifically that the president of the university has stated there is going to be no leeway for the medical school to not immediate carry the same level of excellence in our testing. my imagination is that there will be little to no focus on research at all until you pass COMLEX1

Anyone else having trouble getting touch with joy? I still haven't received an acceptance letter 3+ weeks after the call. I've called and left three voicemails and emailed as well but still nothing!! How can I put down a deposit if I have no date...? Frustrating. :/

Ahh thanks! I felt like at my interview I heard that the students did research somewhere, but I probably made that up, haha.

Kdouglas, my deposit date due date was exactly one month after I received Joy's call, if that helps!

We just finished our first two blocks, of Basic Sciences, so there is no time or allowance for doing research yet. I would say though that the further into the education we go the more likely it is that people get involved. There was an email sent out by Dr. Li asking of our interest in summer research (after year 1) so I think there will be opportunities in the future. A fair number of faculty, Dr. Li, Dr. Zhu, Dr Mahalik (to name a few), all have a strong history with and appreciation for research so I believe if you want it, in time you can find it. At some point I believe there is rumor for an onsite research facility? Though not likely in my or your time here.

Our Anatomy department is also encouraging and supporting those with interest in writing up cases studies on specific, clinically relevant cadaveric findings that we have dissected to do so, likely at the end of the year- into the summer.

We are also near the research triangle, so there are connections that Campbell, CUSOM and the faculty have that may help you find what you are looking for if you show the ambition. Though likely all of this would be done over the breaks, especially after year 1.

What I do know already though is that if you show the interest and put in the effort, the faculty and staff here will help you do what you want. I know this from my ongoing search myself and many opportunities have opened to me.

Does anyone know what the date of accepted students day is?

What are the top five qualities you feel you bring to CUSOM that would enhance the overall climate of our school?

Osteopathic medicine parallels allopathic medicine but has principles and practices that are distinct. Which of these principles and practices are of greatest interest to you and why?

There are many problems facing healthcare in America today. Describe your interpretation of the status of healthcare in the United States today and those challenges the patients and physicians of tomorrow will face.

Hey guys. Applying to Campbell and waiting for the secondary. I was wondering if these were your secondary essay prompts and what the word limits for the essays were.

Thanks in advance!

In the event you submitted an application to another medical school last year, what improvements have you made to your application? Please indicate if you applied to CUSOM in the past.
Above are the questions I was asked. There is no word or character limit, application states to please keep responses to a half page. I assume that is a half page for each question and thats how I submitted mine. The secondary application is a word document that you download and fill out then email to them. Good Luck!

Has anyone had any luck contacting CUSOM after getting accepted?

Anyone on this thread know if biochemistry is a required course? From what the site says (http://www.campbell.edu/cusom/admissions/admissions-process-requirements/), it makes it sounds like the faculty wants you to take two of the 6 preferred courses it lists (immunology, genetics, etc.). In my case I'll only have taken anatomy but I've taken lots of other sciences before.

Unless the school changed the requirement for next year, I don't believe it is. I was accepted without biochemistry.

You have to take 6 additional science credits beyond basic bio, chem, and physics. You could take genetics, cell bio, etc.

Sounds good, would they take credit in engineering courses or Physical Chemistry, I haven't taken Cell BIo, genetics, or other more bio based classes though

I'm not sure. Try calling the school. The staff is great about picking up the phone and answering questions.

I think the school's looking for biological science courses though.

You took anatomy. How many credits was that? That would count towards the six.

My only "extra" classes were 2 anatomy/physiology and an ecology and I go in

Just a quick question guys. If I put down the deposit..is it binding? Would I able to withdraw later if I wanted to go to another school? I know I won't get the money back.

It is not binding. However, you are correct about not getting the money back.

Had my first interview here today with a great group of people. The interview was nothing like I expected; there was almost zero stress. I thought that the interview would be rapid fire questions but instead the interviewers seemed like they were really interested in finding out whether or not if I was a good fit for the school and its goals/missions. This is my top choice and hopefully I get the acceptance call in a few days. Good luck to everyone interviewing!

Thank you Winterland, and good luck to you as well friend. I submitted my secondary (LOR's and fees submitted as well) on 12/9; I was complete 1/2; and I interviewed 1/13. They also told us that the admissions committee meets 1/15 and that we should hear back by 1/17 (really fast turn around time).

Forgot to include this: I recieved the ii 1/7 (five days after recieving complete email). Once again good luck and you're going to love this school (Fingers, toes, eyes, and legs crossed for you).

I heard recently that over 100 seats are now filled.

I have an MCAT of 29, cGPA is 3.73, sGPA is 3.51. How much more is the Presidential scholarship than Dean's?

Weird. I have a 30 MCAT and 3.97 GPA and heard nothing about scholarship. I think I sent my deposit in to fast. Didn't give them time to woo me lol

3.1/31 and nothing for me either....and I was pretty vocal about asking, was told I didn't qualify

That's quite strange, in their academic bulletin it sounded like nearly everyone with 30+ or 3.5+ was invited to apply for the scholarship. Perhaps they are accepting too many qualified students so they are looking at other factors now as well. Speaking of, I submitted my essay 12/23 and am still waiting for a verdict...no one I have contacted at CUSOM seems to know when I might hear back. I want to cancel my other interview if I get it!

The stats for scholarships are minimum requirements for consideration but if you read the bulletin through (as I apparently have 😉 ) there is a very heavy weight put on the interview. Your interviewers nominate potential candidates from the pool of statistically qualified ones when the committee gets together, then they vote on those after getting your essays.

Good luck to all of waiting! Rumor has it that, yes, 100+ seats are filled by deposit. My advice to all of you at this point, is to be as patient as possible by doing what is in your control (practice your interview skills!) and when your chance comes, make sure you are ready to show CUSOM that you want to be here and are a good fit for the school. If you do that, I look forward to seeing you wondering/rushing into the beautiful halls of our medical sciences building next August

Hey guys, I was accepted and put down my deposit and have sent my acceptance signed form, CBC , drug screen, and transcripts - has anyone heard back after doing all this?

I only received an email of acceptance and confirmation of received deposit. Other than those 2 emails, I haven't heard anything from joy or the staff.

Thanks

I recently received an email requesting copies of official transcripts.

Oh really, how long after you sent in your deposit and stuff did you get that email?

I guess I sent in the transcripts before I got that email apparently lol

I've gotten an email confirming receipt of transcripts. Then I got one after they got the other documents they ask for. The email says what they received and what is missing.

Ah ok.

Also, can anyone tell us what books we need for:

cell bio
biochem
histology
anatomy
embryology

Just want to get the books early and cheap, thanks

The school isn't releasing the list until March.
