Campbell University (CUSOM) DIscussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Reading all of this made me remember what an amazing day I had there and how impressed I was with CUSOM! They are just phenomenal! I have no idea what to do....

I'm not familiar with ACOM, but this seems to me to not only be a wonderful school but is shaping up to be a wonderful/supportive class!

I have an ii with CUSOM on oct 12th (first of three scheduled as of now). It's probably my first choice out of the three and the above posts have only strengthened my interest in the school, so thank you all for responding. My only hesitation is that the school is fairly new but it seems like it has its act together. Otherwise, this seems like an amazing school and I can't wait to interview here.

If you check the rankings and exam passage rates of their law and pharmacy programs you will see that they aren't satisfied with just having a mediocre program. The best endorsement I got was from my father in law who is faculty/research at Duke. He said, "I don't know anything about their medical program, but if they run it like everything they do else you'll get great training". I love him but he's a bit of a snob for all thing's Duke so anything nice about another school is a big deal.

That's actually a great endorsement!

That's because Duke rocks

My wife's aunt and uncle live next to a radiologist in Chapel Hill that teaches at duke and he said the exact same thing.

Just got an email saying that they are putting my application on hold? 🙁 so sad. what does this mean? I'm guessing they screened before sending secondaries. or maybe I'm just too late?

Submitted my secondary, payment and LoR's tonight :luck:

When did you guys receive your letters after the phone call.

Very excited to interview here soon. Everyone is just SOO nice!!

I definitely believe the southern hospitality exists here.

Hi friends! I received an interview invite for October 14th. I absolutely LOVE everything I have heard from you all so far and cannot wait to make the trip! Will anyone else be interviewing that day?

Thanks to everyone for feedback on their experiences!

There is a cute little coffee shop next to the gas station off one of the traffic circles. Creek Coffee (if you like chocolate, try a "frozen hot chocolate"😍) they are wonderful. If he likes old cars there is also a classic car dealership he could look around across the highway from the Microtel. You also have some of the typical thrift shops and stuff in Lillington if that's something he would be interested in.

OmG, yea, it is cute.. also you should get outside around 6am right before the sun is coming up.. it is BEAUTIFUL.. I loved jogging around there and around the fountains during that time .. sooo freaking relaxing. so pretty. 🙂

does anyone know how long you will recieve official acceptance letter other than Email? I got my acceptance email on 9/18.

Thanks!

Once you received a complete email, how long before you get a decision on invite to interview?
Thanks.

Waitlisted. 🙁 Got the email today. I really thought I would get in for sure. My interviews all went great and I was definitely enthusiastic about attending the school. The school is amazing and I really want to attend. The email says that they are still "extremely interested" in my application but I still feel like I was rejected.

I am sorry to hear it. Don't give up faith! The waitlist will move possibly throughout the season and definitely at the end of the season.

Has anyone else put their deposit down yet?

Got email saying my file is being reviewed, any chance with 3.8/26, oos

Thanks! I will keep on hoping they come around. I am not taking any more classes and no new MCAT so there is not much I can do to update my application. I just wish I knew why they put me on the waitlist.

any other accepted students receive invite to submit an essay for scholarship? wondering if it was just sent to everyone.

Last year I think it was only sent to certain people, so that's a great sign for you. However, I'm not sure what they are doing this year.

Right after I put my deposit down I got my new MCAT scores back and they were much better. Now I am wondering if this will decrease my chances of being offered a scholarship since I've already comitted with my deposit. 🙁

I'm pretty stoked about coming here, got my tb results and CPR card, going to schedule the drug and background check on Monday, will probably send the check and tb/vaccination/CPR documents on Monday too. I can't believe this is actually happening!!!

I would guess you'll still have a better shot at a scholarship if you update them with your new score. They can't be giving away all of their scholarships now, they probably give them to a select few as they go, so having a higher mcat should put you higher in the running I would think.

I would tend to agree. However, my impression from last cycle was this (more than any other program I have seen) was based less on the impressiveness of one's numbers alone and more of the overall strength of the applicant. Likely the interview is a critical point in this

how long did it take for anyone after getting accepted to receive your official acceptance packet in the mail?

Same question for me as well, been about a week since the call and still nothing. 😳

Just got mine yesterday. I think I was accepted in the same grouping as both of you. So, it should be to you soon!

CUSOM has systems based learning correct as their curriculum? of is it a combination of systems based and case based?

As a whole I would say its best described as systems based with case based modules incorporated (every Friday).

Rejected pre-secondary with 31 MCAT (10 bs, 11 vr, 10 ps), 4.00 sGPA and 3.79 cGPA. However, I am Canadian and due to study abroad credit problems was verified late. Thought they would at least want to hear what I have to say in the secondaries.

Why has no one mentioned the shirt and tie dress code? Everyone gives lecom a hard time, why not CUSOM? I was accepted here, but I just feel like a shirt/tie dress code is just too oppressive. Med school is opressive enough without being told to how to dress. I agree that this school has potential to be really good, but as of now it is too soon to tell. Sure fancy sim labs are cool and shiny but in the end robots are not people. A school should be judged on the clinical rotation sites, and as of now there are no student antecedents on how these work (because no one has done them - which for a prospective student with two other options is hard to overlook). Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed my interview at CUSOM and everyone is ridiculously friendly (and I was thrilled to be accepted), but I think not having any concrete (student experience) info on rotation sites and the ridiculous dress code (why do I need a tie to go sit in lecture?) are some big red flags to consider.

Side note: during my interview the dean mentioned that tobacco companies donated money to CUSOM. Why does everyone give LUCOM a hard time for its tobacco affiliations, but no one ever mentions it for CUSOM?

I just want to add that the funny thing about sim labs is... they aren't used as much as we'd like to think. And think about this, 150ish students and what... 4, maybe 5 sim labs? They are used, but not to the extent that they are advertised. But, this is true of most schools.

As for everything else, I understand your points. However, just as LUCOM, no one is making you apply here.

Your right. I didn't mention at all about about the dress code bc as a woman it didn't bother me. They do require business dress attire during school hours. This includes dress shirt and tie for men. Yes they received a grant from a tobacco company. The dean said he saw it as taking the bad to benefit the good. Every person will have to see how they feel ethically about this.
They do allow eating anywhere on campus, much better than LECOMs rule.

Something I did forget to ask: Is the campus open 24/7?

The tobacco companies did not donate to liberty, it was the government commission that distributes the money from the legal settlement against the tobacco companies. I can't confirm campbell funding.

I was told on tour we would have 24hr access
