Campbell University (CUSOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those on the wait list don't stress too much! I applied in the 2014-2015 cycle and was put on the wait list after interviewing February 2015. I didn't get off the wait list, but on August 21, 2015 I relieved an acceptance from the school without re-interviewing. Just keep asking for updates but the wait list isn't the end of the world!

Anyone on this thread who has received an acceptance? I'm from Oklahoma and as of right now I don't know anyone else heading to CUSOM in the fall.

I'm from Maryland and I'll be headed to CUSOM in the fall. feel free to message me!

Does anyone know of any hotels that offer a discount rate for students visiting CUSOM?

So after a long and rigorous fight with AACOMAS I finally got my GPA's updated during this academic update period. AACOMAS effed up my update the first time but it went through correctly this time. Campbell generously put me on hold while they waited for my GPA's to be updated (I was just shy of their cutoff when I sent out primaries). I say generous because they could have just rejected me but were willing to wait.

Anyway, I finally updated and let Campbell know. I got this email....

"Thank you for submitting your primary application to Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine. Your application has been reviewed and at this moment we would like to bring your application to the Pre-Screen Committee for an in depth review. We are very interested in your candidacy and will be discussing your application within the next few weeks."

I realize the class is full and at best I would be interviewing for a waitlist spot but I will take what I can get as Campbell is by far my top choice. I feel like this email sounds really positive but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Did everyone get that email after being complete? Do I still stand a shot this late in the game? I'm worried it's too little too late but I'm hanging onto every thread of hope I can.

It's not over until it's over. If you can get an interview and wow them, you could land a high wait list spot. From what people are saying there is a ton of movement. It's definitely way late but they must have seen something they liked to hold on to your app. Cusom doesn't seem to be a school that messes around as was evident with not awarding wait lists until after the class was full. Keep the faith.

Hey All, I'm attending CUSOM in fall 2016 and I'm looking for roommate/roommates. If you guys are also looking for people to share a place, please PM me. I've been to Raleigh/ Triangle area for 9 years and I know some stuff here. PM me for more detail.

Hey everyone! Thinking about applying next cycle. Any parents here who can comment on family life while being a student at cusom? Does mandatory attendance make it harder? Does it really get better in 3rd and 4th year? Any thoughts and suggestions?Thank you!!

Any advice on renting car vs taking cab? Interviewing 2/23 OOS. Will be flying into Raleigh and staying at Microtel. Thanks!

ya i think renting it is better. Its a 45 minute drive to the hotel and like a ten minute dive to the hotel. Cab would be more expensive and having a car is more convenient

I would have to agree that renting a car is most convenient but I did meet people that did a cab. It is nice to have the option to drive around the area if location has any impact on your opinion of a school though, especially since some of the locations the students mentioned in regards to housing are more than a walk from the school.

if you haven't already, join our group on facebook (CUSOM class of 2020). a few others have posted in this group looking for roommates

Withdrawing from the wait list here. Excellent school, great people; just had to take up an offer that was already in the bag.

Awesome thanks guys!

I also withdrew from the waitlist at Campbell and agree completely with LightRiser32 about it being an excellent school. Everyone I met was incredibly happy to be there. Good luck to everyone!

Does anyone know when the first day of class is? The academic calendar is empty past this month. I'm assuming it's the first Monday in August?

Can anyone comment on OMS II schedule? Still 8am-5pm? How does mandatory attendance affect your study time? Does being in class actually reduce independent study time?

Withdrew my acceptance and Dean's Scholarship today! Hopefully the waitlist will start moving quickly for those waiting. 🙂

Is there going to be a good deal of waitlist movement? I'm interviewing in March and I was told it's going to be for waitlist.

Yes. Around April or May because that's when the people who already deposited give up their seats for their top choice school. I've heard that 30 to 50% (correct me if I'm wrong) of previous years classes came from the waitlist. This school is also very optimistic when talking about the waitlist.

Sounds good! I'll have some confidence going into the interview then knowing that waitlist isn't a far cry from a spot in the class (like some schools).

I am an MS-1, so what I know is secondhand from MS-2 friends.

The schedule is not 8-5 pm every day - it's actually not even 8-5pm every day during MS-1 (although it is at least 2/5 days of the week, unfortunately). Mandatory attendance is just something you end up having to live with coming here. You put in your headphones and sit in the back or to the sides hidden away and do your own thing. It it annoying? Yes, especially during the lectures with bad professors. It is really that bad? Not really. We have a designated number of skips, so often times people will just take days off to do their own thing. You have to figure out a way to make it work for you, but from what I can tell of my class, even those who complain the loudest about mandatory attendance have found a way to make it work.

Thank you @polylux !! So, what do the MS I and II schedules actually do look like? lol I'm trying to get a feel for what a daily/weekly schedule might look like, considering that I have kids who need day care. So any information about time you actually spend at cusom would be extremely helpful!!

Here are the current block schedules for MS-1's (block 3) and MS-2's (block 7) for your reference.

Note that you will either be in group A or group B, not both. Any time you see an SP, OSCE, or practical, you'll only actually be in there for 30-60 min, not the full time slot.

I can give you the run-down on MS-1. It's a bit long, but hopefully it will help explain things

CUSOM divided the class into an "A" and "B" group. Those groups stay the same the whole year. We usually have Anatomy lab M and Th, maybe Tuesday. Each lab the groups switch going first (so you may have 1.5 hours off after lunch to study before lab from 3-5:30 on Monday for example, but then you'll be in the early lab from 1-3:30 on Thursday and be off early then, while the other group is in the lab late). OMM lab on Tuesdays just changes A to B earlier each block, but you may have something else the other 1.5 hour, like an extra Anatomy lab some weeks.

In short, the schedule is HIGHLY variable from block-to-block, week-to-week, and even day-to-day. We got a lot of "embedded" study time first block, but they're packing more Anatomy and other stuff in last block and especially this block. This block we regularly have 3 anatomy labs a week, plus Clinical Skills on Wednesday, usually, etc. Just to be safe pretty much expect to be on campus from 8-5:00, or 5:30 on Wednesdays. You will definitely get out earlier some days, but you never know exactly when that will be. When you get the block schedule you can see which days of the week your A or B group might be out earlier, but even that can change sometimes, although rarely.

The basic upshot is that 8-5:30 is the "official" schedule, and they aren't shy about taking up that time several days a week. You almost always get out at least by 12 or 1 on Fridays, though. This is true for MS-1, you'd have to get some MS-2's to describe their schedule, as I can't speak for them.

Edit: @polylux , I should have done that, instead of typing all this out. Still brain-drained from the exam, I guess!

Sorry, just for clarification: when you say practical, do you mean the afternoon labs (OMM, anatomy, etc) or just the practical exams?

I guess the main question that most people would be if the required time in class really affects you guys? Does it hurt some people that learn better on their own?

The things that drugs do to your brain, man...

Sorry, just for clarification: when you say practical, do you mean the afternoon labs (OMM, anatomy, etc) or just the practical exams?
Just the practical exams. OMM labs almost always take the full 2 hours. Anatomy labs are not mandatory attendance, but it won't help your grade to skip and it really won't ingratiate you with your group members.

I tend to learn better on my own and I am doing consistently above average, despite the time spent in class. Like I said, is it annoying? For sure. Does it frustrate me? Yes. Does it really hurt my grade? To be honest, I can't really tell, so if it is affecting me, it's not by much. You find a way to work around it.

Don't get me wrong - mandatory attendance is definitely a con for me. I don't enjoy it, at all. But it's my opinion that it is more about discipline and time-management than it is about your learning style. One of my classmates near me always has headphones on, is never on the same lecture that is being taught, and still manages to do quite well despite being forced to be in class. Other classmates fool around because they "can't focus" and are always behind and don't do as hot. It's up to you to make things work with what you're given.

EDIT: The above is only for morning lectures. Afternoon labs are different - you really need to spend some time with the cadaver, might as well be during lab time.

Did they really make anatomy labs non-mandatory for 2019?

No, it's still mandatory, per the syllabus. Ashley still walks around and makes sure everyone is there, and I've seen her marking on her sheet. Do you have to stay the "entire" time? Probably not, if you want to duck out 20 mins early or something. But it's definitely mandatory.

There's no penalty for missing though. It doesn't get marked as an absent and you don't have to make it up like OMM.

Lab syllabus says that each absence "may result in a 2% deduction on the subsequent practical examination". I don't know if they follow through on that or not, but looks like they have the option if they want to.

Recently interviewed and was told the admissions committee was meeting Wednesday. Any new acceptances or waitlists?

Anything we need to bring (picture, ID) with us to the interview?
