Hey guys, I could really use some help deciding between these two great school! First, the cost situation. As it stands right now, Case's COA is about $10k a year higher than Miami's, but all of my Case aid is need based, and if, hopefully, my family's financial situation improves, then Case will likely cost much more per year.

So basically, it comes down to Case's better reputation + research opportunities vs. Miami's better finaid + location. I felt pretty comfortable with both schools' students, and I think both have their strengths. I do want to do some research in med school, but I don't intend to go into academic medicine.

Thanks in advance! 😀

Sorry this post isn't going to help you out, but has anyone realized how many new threads about Case vs. School X have come up recently?

I see you're from Florida. Have you considered the whole having a support network thing that everyone seems to overplay/underplay around here? And did you get $$ from UMiami?

Heh yea, Case's 5/3 deadline is really causing quite a commotion on SDN!

I've def considered the support system thing. My friends are mostly in Florida, but my family will be moving up north, so that's kind of divided. I'm getting some $$ from Miami, but I'm getting some $$ from Case as well, and it turns out to be about a $10k a year diff. The thing is though, Miami's money is merit based, while Case's is need based, so if my family's financial situation improves(it can't really get any worse), then the diff may be quite a bit larger.

Let's see. You don't want to do academic medicine anyway, they have research opportunities available at Miami, you got better financial aid from Miami, and you like the Miami location better. What exactly was the question again?

Seriously, man, save your money and go to Miami.

I'd go with Miami as well for all the reasons listed above.

That merit money is always going to be there while the need-based aid is going to jack up your debt + 6.8%/year. Miami's still a great school.

You're going to be able to find research opportunities at every school, especially if you look for it. Then it just comes down to reputation and I don't see that as being the a good enough reason for choosing a much more expensive, far away school.

Awww. 🙁

You should come visit us. We're still a few hundred posts away from 5000, so we could use your help. But even if you don't, it's still ok. You and I will always have Canada. 🙂

i heard Canada is what's hot in the summer, I shall visit you guys in the thread soon

I would choose Case, but only because I'm a reputation *****.

But seriously, one of my friends is a M1 at Case right now, and he really loves it.

You'll have no problem finding research opportunities at either school so it looks like reputation vs. cheaper + location. Miami may not have the same reputation as case but it's certainly no slouch, and as you know wherever you go you'll get out of school what you put in. Case probably has a better reputation, but does it have a 10k+/year better reputation? Probably not but that's for you to decide.

i obviously have no knowledge of your parents' financial situation or of what makes you believe it will improve but i would say... the cost difference here is not astronomical, at least for the first year. i would say go with whichever school you liked better... which i feel like is miami?
