No they've been there since she moved in last summer he had them at her last apartment she had to herself.. parents don't own the house.. all three of us are on the lease.. her parents are an absolute NUT JOB (mainly the dad).. the girl is 24 and her parents ping her phone to see where her location is at if she doesn't respond to them in a certain amount of time... and she has to text them before and when she gets to any location.. that includes school... walmart.. etc. That's usually when I've noticed the cameras come on is when she goes to the store or something and I come home. She also can't drive back to an adjoining state on breaks for some reason so her dad makes the 8 hour round trip to pick her up and take her back every time.. I just shake my head... it's one thing if they have control over her life it's another if they start controlling mine
Sorry, but no. **** that. Her parents have no right to have them there. If you don't ALL agree with them there, they need to go. Not okay for her parents to be that controlling over her, and definitely not okay for her parents to decide they have the right to watch you guys.

And yeah, this is not healthy at all. She's an adult. This is controlling and abusive behavior.

Or the access needs to be changed so only you guys can access it. They don't live there. They don't need to be able to look at it, even if it's for "security" reasons.

I do feel bad for her in a way.. bc she can't do much about it since they are helping pay for vet school. but them controlling her has lead to her trying to control me.. I brought this up very long time ago but the software system for it is expensive.. a monthly payment that I honestly can't afford and didn't want to take out more loans with...same for her.. her parents pay for housing, food, etc, anything outside tuition I think.. so that's why she "technically" can't have access to it on her phone.

That's still arguably abuse. And certainly not something you should be dealing with.

My offer is legit, fam. Message me here or on Facebook and I'll come up!

I get not wanting to take out more loans, but she seriously needs to cut ties with her parents if they think this is okay. I'm sorry you're dealing with this, and I'm sorry she has such abusive parents. But her parents can't dictate what happens in your home. I would legit unplug the camera that faces your room since it makes you so uncomfortable.

I'll still be in Illinois in 6 weeks. Let me know if you need help moving, and my escape and I will come up to help!

This is like one of the kindest gestures. I feel so bad for complaining but I literally can't take it much longer.. especially with this whole Spring break fiasco. Thankfully my boyfriend was able to turn the alarm off before the police came but still scared him. It may not seem much to some but adding this stress along with school just does a number on me.
This is super messed up, I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. I would be up there if I could, I’ve always needed an excuse to go full Nick like in this scene. One of my hands down favorites and I am 100% Nick

Also I 100% believe that I would be Nick, Ski would be a less douchey version of Schmidt, and Bats would be Winston in that clip.

I will do this even more than likely it will get plugged back in.. these are pretty big security cameras that sit on the ledge between kitchen and living area. I turned the one facing my bedroom towards the wall thinking no one would notice but that didn't even work.

Also, an additional point
Why does she have access to the security system app but YOU do not??????

Bc I quite frankly don't want to pay $x to get it on my phone.... I don't think she even pays to get it on her phone it's all through her parents... I'm a very very chill person so I kinda just let it roll off my back until it became an issue with my bf trying to take care of my cat over break.

If it’s not after I leave for home at the end of the semester, I’d come too. I can’t lift super heavy things but I am great for moral support, cookies, and also lighter boxes

Do you have an iPhone? The Nest App looks like it is free!

Are you on reddit? You could try posting on the legal advice subreddit. They might have some advice for dealing with the cameras, especially since it's such a sketchy situation.

Great idea I will look into this.

Sharpie over the lens, or duck tape over the one near your bedroom.

Another awesome idea. I will see if I can use some clear tape. It has to be pretty discreet and not sure how long it will last if someone "checks in" and they can't see

I’m super thankful that I’ve finally found the mentor I need to make pursing the specialty I love seem so much less daunting. I came to vet school 150% sure I was going to be a general practitioner, and that’s just completely changed over the last year. Still intimidated, but I’ve at least gotten to the point where I can admit that this is what I want. Baby steps!

Congrats! Which speciality is that? Good luck, you're going to do fantastic.

Yay!! I’m glad you found the specialty you want to go into! Funny enough, I entered vet school dead set on being SA surgery as well, but more and more I’m realizing that the surgeries I LOVE, the ones that encourage me and get me through the day are all emergency surgeries.

I still talk about the ex lap that I gloved up on over the summer-
dr first let me touch things because he wanted to let me feel what the inside of the live stomach/ functional pylorus feels like. He changed gloves and I took mine off and ran the bowel at the 2 cm perforated ulcer through the duodenum at the level of the pylorus and he actually needed my help retracting the pancreas [slightly nerve wracking as it was blanching as I held it] so he could suture it closed.

But yeah, more and more I’m thinking a switch to ECC instead. My parents are surprisingly behind it, so I’m just planning to shadow more at ER’s over the summer and see who will let me come over and learn.

I’m so glad you’ve found something you love! You’ll be an excellent ER doc:) Vet school changes everything, that’s for sure. But plans are overrated anyway haha.

Obviously I'm not ECC, but it's my experience that as an actual specialty, ECC focuses more on the things like triage and stabilization and intensive-care type of scenarios and not so much on actual surgery. If you like those things then I think ECC is great, and a lot easier to match in than SA surgery at least. But if you are expecting to actually be active in emergency surgeries, I'm not sure that an actual specialty in ECC is what you're looking for. To be honest, non-boarded ER vets at places that don't have ACVS surgeons tend to do more surgeries than boarded ECC vets do.

That’s actually what I was thinking, being a non-boarded ER vet, not quite the boarded ECC.

I’ve changed my mind at least a hundred times and basically realized that my fleeting love of almost everything means I should probably be a GP.

And I also recently fell in love with the idea of owning my own practice. I used to say if I had to do something completely un-vet related it’d be interior design. So why not combine the two and design my own practice!? I learned at a lunch and learn that classical music was effective at reducing stress in dogs and I really want to play classical music at my clinic and make it feel like a spa. Hahahah

At work yesterday the doctor asked the staff, "Has anyone ever placed a female urinary catheter?"

"I did once on a cadaver."

"Alright RM, you're up!"

With a great deal of trepidation, I gathered up everything I thought I needed. The next words out of my mouth were, "Holy Crap! I did it!"

The tech told me to talk more softly so the clients didn't hear me saying things like that. :)

* This was at an ER. I am definitely shooting for GP ER vet.

I had a similar but opposite moment when I said to someone “I wish I could just be a general practitioner who only does surgery...” And my friend was like: “Ummm why don’t you just become a surgeon?” It was kind of a duh moment lol.

*crawls out of ER overnights* You rang?

Yeah, I did a somewhat non-traditional route of going into ER right outside of school, without an internship, and definitely without wanting to pursue specialty. In general, I knew I wanted to do more outpatient than ICU/critical care work, so I wasn't interested in a residency as much. I also really really wanted to do surgeries, so when I interviewed at a ton of places I made sure to make that an important factor. It is really, really hospital and location dependent. As a rule of thumb, the bigger the clinic, the less likely you will be able to do surgeries as an ER doc. But it seriously varies.

I am at a pretty moderate-sized specialty center with a handful of different specialists that I can bug when I have a weird case, which I love. We also have surgeons, but on evenings and weekends, if the ER docs are comfortable, we do all the abdominal surgeries. So just in the last year alone I've done 30 some FB surgeries, 10+ C-sections, 10+ pyometras, a few splenectomies, GDVs, a few enucleations, and at least 50+ laceration repairs.

Overall, I really love where I am, I really enjoy my mentorship I received, and despite complaining most days I like what I do. If you have any more questions about ER, feel free to ask away! :D
