Oh they’re not judging too harsh.
And yeah yesterday she was walking me through all the drugs she frequently used and there were four in particular and I had only heard of one before. So like... dexmedetomidine, acepromazine, midazolam, and propofol. It’s all just a learning experience. They’re not judging, they’re just trying to teach and I’m trying to absorb it all.
Be patient with yourself!
Antibiotics:
Convenia
Clavamox/Amoxi
Cephalexin
Ciprofloxacin
Zymox (marbofloxacin)
Orbax (some other floxacin)
Doxycycline - tick borne diseases esp!
Metronidazole/flagyl - diarrhea
Injectibles:
The ones you listed above, plus ketamine/Valium at times
Buprenorphine (we have an oral version, but oral absorption is debatable)
Others:
Proin (Phenylpromanalamine? PPA) - for urinary incontinence. Can also use diethylstilbesterol (DES... estrogen!) in females and see if it works
Prazosin - helps with bladder spasms and stuff, good for blocked kitties
Cerenia (maropitant, magical drug) - nausea, car sickness, but also inflammation, heard of using it for bladder problems, breathing problems - loads of possible uses. IV version great for sick critters that can’t keep down pills.
Zofran - another anti-emetic option. I usually reach for cerenia first. Also injectable and pill options.
Apoquel (olclatinab or something like that) - allergies and itching.
Cytopoint - also allergies. Injectable SQ, only for dogs
Dog NSAIDS - rimadyl, previcoxx, meloxicam
Cat NSAIDS - onsior (cats will straight up eat these little tabs and want more!) I’ve also used meloxicam in cats for 3-4 days with no issues
Gabapentin - dog pain relief, cat pain relief and also good for fractious cats!
Trazodone - good for fractious or anxious dogs
Alprazolam (Xanax) - also good for anxiety in dogs or cats but trazodone is becoming more favored, less chance for abuse
Apomorphine - make that dog barf! We have it formulated into eye drops for ease of use. Works great. For cats, I think low low dose dexmedetomidine is favored now.
There’s so much variety in ear and eye meds, you may as well just see what your clinic carries and look into that. Same for flea/tick/HW options.
I know you didn’t really ask for that but eh... I got started and couldn’t stop. [emoji23]
