Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1) I feel like the last few weeks have really changed my opinions on what I want to ultimately do. From the beginning, I’ve been dead set on GP and now I can’t help but wonder if maybe I would like an internship/ residency. It’s not even that I love GP any less, it’s just I feel like I found something I love even more. It’s kinda confusing and I don’t even know where to start with all of that...kinda intimidating, honestly.

2) I got a scholarship to attend a conference this fall and I’m super excited!

I was also confidant at the start of the year I was going to be a GP but have been having the same thoughts since this semester. Ahhhhh.

I feel like I would’ve gained more from this internship had I done it next summer... Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I’m learning a lot, but I feel like an idiot most of the time because my mentor will ask me questions and my brain goes:

CED9AF04-91B6-4AF2-A4FD-4DCD425DFEAC.gif

I’m trying really hard, but I sometimes feel like I haven’t had enough medicine specific classes to answer her spontaneous questions right (ex: pharmacology, virology, bacteriology, clinical pathology, diagnostics).

Lately we’ve talked about drugs a lot and the only drugs background I have is physiology. So back to the basics I have a pocket notebook that I’m currently writing drugs and stuff out in so I can better understand *things*.

Edit: and it’s not super hard oblivious drugs. It’s drugs like Acepromazine and Torbutrol so I’m sure it’ll all be helpful for future classes! Just needed to express my concerns!

I’m sure current vets could give you a list of ‘use them all the damn time’ drugs to look at so you can be a bit more prepared? I’m sure they aren’t judging you too harshly, anyway.
Oh they’re not judging too harsh.

And yeah yesterday she was walking me through all the drugs she frequently used and there were four in particular and I had only heard of one before. So like... dexmedetomidine, acepromazine, midazolam, and propofol. It’s all just a learning experience. They’re not judging, they’re just trying to teach and I’m trying to absorb it all.

If anyone tells you that getting your vehicle registered in Colorado is idiot proof, you can tell them you know an idiot. Lol. I couldn't even get an extension done right.

Be patient with yourself!

Antibiotics:
Convenia
Clavamox/Amoxi
Cephalexin
Ciprofloxacin
Zymox (marbofloxacin)
Orbax (some other floxacin)
Doxycycline - tick borne diseases esp!
Metronidazole/flagyl - diarrhea

Injectibles:
The ones you listed above, plus ketamine/Valium at times
Buprenorphine (we have an oral version, but oral absorption is debatable)

Others:
Proin (Phenylpromanalamine? PPA) - for urinary incontinence. Can also use diethylstilbesterol (DES... estrogen!) in females and see if it works

Prazosin - helps with bladder spasms and stuff, good for blocked kitties

Cerenia (maropitant, magical drug) - nausea, car sickness, but also inflammation, heard of using it for bladder problems, breathing problems - loads of possible uses. IV version great for sick critters that can’t keep down pills.

Zofran - another anti-emetic option. I usually reach for cerenia first. Also injectable and pill options.

Apoquel (olclatinab or something like that) - allergies and itching.

Cytopoint - also allergies. Injectable SQ, only for dogs

Dog NSAIDS - rimadyl, previcoxx, meloxicam

Cat NSAIDS - onsior (cats will straight up eat these little tabs and want more!) I’ve also used meloxicam in cats for 3-4 days with no issues

Gabapentin - dog pain relief, cat pain relief and also good for fractious cats!

Trazodone - good for fractious or anxious dogs

Alprazolam (Xanax) - also good for anxiety in dogs or cats but trazodone is becoming more favored, less chance for abuse

Apomorphine - make that dog barf! We have it formulated into eye drops for ease of use. Works great. For cats, I think low low dose dexmedetomidine is favored now.

There’s so much variety in ear and eye meds, you may as well just see what your clinic carries and look into that. Same for flea/tick/HW options.

I know you didn’t really ask for that but eh... I got started and couldn’t stop. [emoji23]

Too much pharm on this page, hello PTSD
Old McDonald had a Pharm A M A M OOOOOxicillin. And on that pharm he had an opioid A M A M OOOOOxicillin with a bupe bupe here and a bupe bupe there here a bupe there a bupe everywhere a bupe bupe old McDonald had a Pharm A M A M OOOOOxicillin.

You joke about pharm now. Just wait😛

omg. I love you TT. You are truly too kind.

Tox was better 😛 Especially the poison plant unit. Now I can tell people when we're hiking what plants will kill them! They love it 😉
I get to enjoy tox next semester too! :heckyeah:

My boss was so good at tox that we all joke she wrote the poisoner's handbook, so I'm hoping I can hit her up if anything is beyond me in that class

You now have a Vetscapades skit for next year.

Tox was certainly interesting here...and I did better in it...but I did not like it all that much either 😛

Apparently our tox class is online only and it makes a lot of people really upset with that so no one really learns tox.

My externship program is sweeeeeet. So many surgeries.
I love being a vet student and officially remember why I wanted to do this:biglove:

That's exactly how I feel about my externship! I'm at a pig vet clinic for half of my summer and they have 3 vets that I get to ride along with. I've only been here a week and a half, but I'm already in love with the clinic! I had been considering working at a large/mixed animal practice after school, but this has already shown me that I do really just want to work with pigs. 😍

I’m so glad that you love you externship @PigFarmer25 !! Such a good feeling. I’ve learned similar things about myself and what I love (i.e. surgery makes me super happy).

In one more hour I’ll go take my lab practical and be done with my first year! Except for the stuff I missed that I’m making up this month. But.... done! Hopefully! If I don’t fail! Soooooooo ready to be done. Soooooooooooooooooooo ready. I should look over my notes again because it’s good not to fail things but dooooooone.

@strider144 rock that lab practical - you GOT THIS! 🙂

I think I probably passed. I won't know for another week or two, presumably. But it didn't feel like it was a <60% exam experience and thus far most of my med school grades haven't been a big shock.

It kept getting delayed. I get accommodations so I'm in a separate group for testing and the earlier groups had technical difficulties. It was already something where it was 5+ hours between written and practical exams, and then it was delayed by at least another hour and it took forever to get started.

HOWEVER. Holy crap did it feel awesome to walk out of that building. I still have some stuff to make up from being out for surgery, but I am now effectively a rising second year! Ahhhhhh how did that even happen how is this real. I, uh, was not on a clear path for a long time. So having fallen onto this very clear-cut path with a set goal and set steps that ends in a totally respectable and feasible career is still very, very strange to me.

Congrats strider!!
Thanks! Not gonna lie, there's a tiny bit of well I guess if they were going to find out I was an admissions mistake it would've happened by now. So that's a relief, since it's a little late for my original plan of failing out of my post-bacc at this point.

Obligatory post bump since 18, 19, 20, and 22 are all higher on the list than us.

We're slackalackin

Picking up the keys to my new place tomorrow. While my current place has been great to me for 3 years, I’m super excited to live in a place that has a backyard for my doggo 🙂
