CSU/NEOMED POST BACC/ MED PROGRAM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You certainly have given me a lot to think about while I wait for this wait list email anxiously. I am from Ohio and I actually personally know people that have gotten kicked out from NEOMED for weird reasons, but I still somehow thought it was my best shot.

I mean my alternative is to wait until the fall, finish the few prerequisites I have left and take the MCAT, and then see apply direct entry and DO. There are great DO programs I am interested in, but it's a lot to think about!

What are some of the reasons for people getting kicked out of the program?
Also, it must suck to be waiting every day for an email until you hear your off of the waitlist, hang in there!

If one matriculates to NEOMED, what's the consensus of the quality of education recieved? Prior to applying, I spoke to current students (not in postbac/md, some were bs/md) and they seem to like the medical school. I also spoke to professors there and attending physicians who work with a lot of med students/residents who came out of NEOMED and again no one has anything to say there. I'm not sure if it's just bc med school is what you make it or I haven't spoken to the right people. I know most of the residents place in OH or in MI & PA but I don't have a problem with that.

So I think the training is alright as a whole (lots of loops to jump through and tons of little requirements most medical schools don't have) but the issues for me are how quick they are to kick people out for these requirements. Even while at the medical school I know people that have been kicked out for weird infractions. I haven't heard of this being the case from friends at other medical schools. It's also such a young group of people. Most were straight out of high school from a BS/MD program so they start Neomed at 19-20. I was in my mid-20s when I started and felt ANCIENT. There is a lot of drama and relationships and immaturity that I last recall from high school. This is not the case at most medical schools, where mid-20s is a common median age. I don't think I got challenged as much as I needed to be while there and I think they wasted some of my time with extraneous requirements.

They told us in the email we had until March 25th to confirm our acceptance, so I think you will be hearing back from them shortly there after.

Fun fact: those of you starting post-bacc in the fall will (if evvvvverything goes smoothly) be starting medical school with a class majorly comprised of BS/MD kids from YSU/Kent/Akron who are currently seniors in high school.

Why are you admittedly putting the program down? So far you contributed no useful information to the forum, and you created your profile on Monday, so why should we give you any credibility? And I don't get why the age gap would be a problem, we are all there to learn medicine.

NEOMED is known for having a young student population, so I don't see why that's relevant. What we've essentially learned is that there's no flexibility with the requirements so don't expect any. It seems like if everyone meets the [very clearly stated] reqs, they'll be ready for matriculation.

Just be careful. I know many people with regrets. Regardless of how clearly the requirements seem, they can change and requirements can be added out of nowhere. I am admittedly bitter for many reasons both personal to me and due to my friends. Good luck with whatever you decide! I'm done here.

Well if it makes the post baccs feel better, the Bacc/MD students are sophomores in college, not high school seniors, so we can be a little mature.... Just a little 😉

Does anyone know what % of the first CSU/NEOMED post-bacc class matriculated and made it to NEOMED? They should be first years now.

I also got accepted.

I don't think that the requirements are too much to ask for. Honestly if you can't hold a 3.4 GPA you shouldn't be attempting to attend anyone's medical school and the required MCAT score is average so again I don't see the problem. If you can't meet those requirements you're oh well too bad. We have starting when we decided to apply to being studying for the MCAT, or atleast after we've been accepted.

If anyone is interested I have the 2015 kaplan ebooks.

Found out that 12 people started at NEOMED from the first CSU/NEOMED post-bacc class and 3 people from the CSU/NEOMED bacc class. Wonder how many there were to start with. I hope not the full 35.

Hmmm. 😵 That is the first batch of students though, so the number might have gone up. (ps i think the first class are MS3s now? I read in an article online the program started about 5 years ago) Also it may be that the first batch didnt start at 35. Too bad we can't get in contact with others in the program to learn more.

So the 12 is from the class that are MS2s now. There are 18 that are currently MS1s. Not sure how many there are in that first class who are MS3s then.

I have a friend who is in her second year at the CSU portion. She did say the attrition rate is around 40-50%.

That's not very reassuring….I wonder what the issue is...

I have received a few private messages asking about the attrition rate, so I'm back to answer on here.
The requirements aren't as easy as they seem - that's pretty much it.
That and they don't care if you make it to NEOMED.
They have direct entry applicants with stronger GPAs and MCATs than the post-bacc students, so they really don't care.
They've already made the money off you from CSU.
There are a lot of required classes to cram into two years while studying for the MCAT on top of that.
Most people take classes year round - yes, even during the summer.
There's a lot of busy work.
They WANT you to take a third year because that means more money for CSU, so they make things hard so that you end up taking that third year. Then even after that, a lot of people can't get their requirements lined up.
You can think I'm being negative, but the numbers of post-bacc students from CSU that make it to NEOMED being less than half... that speaks for itself.

Summary advice:
If you have better offers, even other post-bacc programs or masters programs (medical schools love masters programs) lined up, I would say take them. If you have a chance to get into DO school this year or next year, take it.
Like I said earlier, if this is your ONLY shot into medical school, go for it, work your hardest, and be part of that 50%.

Thank you, I always appreciate your honest input. This program is my best shot so I need to work to be a part of that 50%. It does seem like a third year is a very real possibility, especially if you don't have any science courses already done. From the outline they gave, it looks like we'd have to take the MCAT the summer right before [potential] matriculation (if you want to take it with all your chems done). That's cutting it close. I really wanted a summer to study for it but that just leaves this next summer where I would be studying for it and taking biochemistry….

You need a B or higher to transfer any classes from your old university. I'm not sure if they let you transfer credits after you've accepted (like classes from this upcoming summer). If they don't reach out to us this week I'm going to call and ask about that.

Good news for you waitlisties.... I got the email a few weeks ago, accepted the offer and now I am in. There is and will be movement in the list. Keep your head up.

I truly appreciate you posting this- I will keep my fingers crossed!

Does anyone know how many people they put on the waitlist? I remember they said 3-4.. but am not sure because I was pretty sleep deprived on the interview day haha

I have no idea! I don't remember them mentioning it on my day.

I was accepted into the program too, is there a facebook group or something that I can join?

Thanks in advance
