Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sounds good. I'll focus on the interview then.

I have been told that DMU's interviews are super laid back. They dont ask trick questions or go out of their way to make you nervous. Its a pretty cool place. They want to get to know you as a person, a conversationalist. Just go in there and be you.
And like everyone else said once you get the interview your stats are already "approved" basically. I got my interview also with a 25 MCAT.
When is your interview? I am so tired of waiting for the 13th to get here....

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before, but how long after the interview does DMU notify you as to their decision (ie rejection, waitlist, acceptance)? I'm interviewing on 9/20. Thanks!

Their website states "usually within 3 weeks of the interview date a decision is sent via email"

Congrats, ma'am! Shoot me a pm if you need anything.

Put on hold. 🙁 3.6 32MCAT I think I did a crappy secondary though

I'm sorry to hear! I haven't heard a peep even though my file is complete. We're you notified that you were placed on hold or did you call them and find out?

I haven't heard anything either. I've been complete since July 23rd.

They emailed me. Holds feel like application purgatory

II here - complete 8/7

Super excited for this one. Looks like all of September is booked.

got an invite today! Thinking of doing 10/31, anyone else interviewing that day? I'd be happy to split a room 😀

Where is a good hotel to stay?

I was looking at Holiday inn by the airport, they have free airport shuttle and apparently a complimentary shuttle to DMU! That'll save some $ on a rental car 😉

Congrats!

Had to drop Sept 27th, forgot about a wedding I need to attend in the excitement 8(

Rejected pre-interview... But received another ii from a different school right after, so all is well. Wasn't expecting much love with a 24 mcat. Good luck all!

I have a lower MCAT too. Where did you get the ii to?

Have you called and told them? I would like to call them and try to snatch that date if at all possible

I am interviewing on Oct 17th, and Holiday Inn by the airport is booked for the night of the 16th. 🙁

I booked a room at the Baymont Inn by the Des Moines airport for $67 through Priceline.

If I was complete in late July and haven't heard anything from them yet should I expect to be put on hold soon?

Rock it girl!!! That's great!!

I don't know about expecting but I was complete and a day later got an II, before those who were complete earlier but the later got an ii. So I think you're not out of the running.

Anyone know information about the big tuition scholarships? Like what stats you would need, what they look for, etc.?

So the secondary app asks about clinical experiences in rural areas, and with primary care physicians. My shadowing and volunteer experience has all been in areas with >15,000 population, and only with DO orthopedic surgeons...however, one of the surgeons also works in the ER. Is the ER considered primary care? Also, I grew up in a rural area so I know my family DO just through regular doctor visits...would that be an acceptable thing to write about? If not, do I just write "None" in the box? Frustrated because I have experience, just not in 2/3 of the areas the essays ask about :bang:

Both my PCP's growing up were DO's and I talked about that. Definitely worth me mentioning. And ER can be considered primary care I believe.

Just released my interview for September 23... so anyone waiting for and wanting a September interview date, go for it...

So if I do write about my family doctor being a DO, what do I write in the "hours" box? I ask because I never did formally shadow him.

Hmm I don't remember what I did. I shadowed two DO's but mentioned my PCP's growing up for one of the essays so they didn't all sound the same. I wanna say I left the hours blank, but not sure.

When you talk about the PCP you shadowed, does it have to be a DO?

ya, i dont think ER is primary care, but i think its grouped together with IM, FP and all the other ones as "basic care" specialties. Just asked the ER doc sitting next to me (im at work) and he says they're not technically primary care though they do a lot of similar things to primary care physicians in the current health care system.

The recognized primary care fields are family medicine, internal medicine, OB/GYN and pediatrics. You may have primary care trained physicians working as ER doctors but ER is not primary care.

Hey guys and gals just a little word from a current student for all of you out there stressing about getting your interviews. A few of us that are involved with interview days met with admissions yesterday and they reiterated to us how DMU carefully selects students that show more than just good GPA and MCAT scores. They have seen people that do service in undergrad generally continue to do service in medical school. The same goes for leadership/shadowing/research and all the areas that make you a strong applicant. DMU wants students that are strong in these other areas because they care about the people in our community here and they want our student body to be involved. So good luck!

So do you have any clue what the likelihood is of being accepted in the earlier interviews- Like September
