Hey guys!!

Just trying to get some advice here! I have been accepted to both Iowa and Emory, and I am in a bind of which one to attend. Price is an issue, as Iowa would cost me around 31k/yr in tuition while emory would be about 42k/yr, plus the increased cost of living in Atlanta. I am in-state for Iowa, and went to Iowa for undergrad as well, so a change of scenery would be nice. I know that the CDC is associated with Emory and it has a great global health program, which is what I want to go into. Is the reputation of Emory worth the extra cost? Is Emory really that prestigious of a school compared to Iowa?

Honest answers appreciated, I have 10 days to decide the next 4 years of my life :/

Emory 100%. I think you could stand to get out of Iowa for four years (not that it's a bad place, I just think that everyone should live somewhere different, at least for a time). And considering your interest in global health I'm sort of surprised it's even a question.

Thanks for that input!!! You are right that I want to leave Iowa for a time (great place to live though). Do you think the extra 40-50k of debt in the end to attend Emory over Iowa is a big deal? I plan on a specialty that can be used overseas, which won't be a high-paying specialty.

Thanks!

Look at the pros and cons

CONs for going to EMORY
That's a minimum of $44,000 difference.
If money is the issue I suggest u stick with Iowa .

Atlanta is very expensive to life.

There is also a tendency that you might not like Atlanta. Who am I kidding Atlanta is awesome

But again am not in Iowa . It's not a place I would want to live for whatever reason

PRO

1. U get to leave Iowa

2. U get to leave Iowa

3. U get to leave Iowa

I honestly can't say how big of a deal it is bc I'm not you and don't know your financial situation and attitudes. But many people seem to take on a lot of debt in medical school, so I think it is manageable! The CDC connection seems worth that extra debt, especially if that is the work you see yourself doing, but thats just one dudes opinion.

Thanks for your input guys, I really appreciate the opinions! I am leaning towards emory at the moment, but I still have 4 days. I am very excited but also nervous/scared 🙂

Hey everyone I just wanted to give an update! So 3 days before I had to decide, one of the admissions board people came into a meeting I was having with a financial advisor at Iowa and gave me a scholarship that made the difference between the two almost 80k total, plus living costs which would make it probably 90k. The kindness they showed was just awesome. I had tried to contact emory about financial information, and none of the 4 people I called responded in a weeks time, and I just got a bad vibe. I know that moving to Atlanta would have been awesome, but I made the decision to stay at Iowa. I felt like they cared about me a lot more, the students were less "gunner-type", and obviously the scholarship made my decision a bit easier.

I really really appreciate all of the info you guys gave me, it was helpful in making this hard decision. I think Emory is an amazing school, and I hope that I don't regret my decision in the long run.

Just because Iowa is in the Midwest, don't underestimate the opportunities in global health. There are combined degree opportunities (MD/MPH, and MD/PhD). Many students do international rotations the summer between M1 & M2 as part of the Barry Freeman fellowship (http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/md/freemanfellowship/), and there are a fair number of students actively interesting in Global Medicine:

Thank you for this!!! I am excited to attend and hope that my feelings of "did I make a mistake?" wear off once school starts 🙂 I am very interested in this, thank you!
