LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for all the congratulations!

I am looking forward to put faces to the usernames in this thread. I'm somewhat local (live in Tampa) so if you have any questions about local haps, feel free to PM me. Tampa has a lot of fun places and good restaurants.

So I know it's far away but I'm making mental lists of what you can get before starting school. So far, here's what I've come up with:

1. rolling backpack (lots of books to haul)
2. new laptop (mine is 2 years old yo)
3. coffee maker (most important!)

Feel free to add on to the list.

Good luck to those who are still up to interview. Remember to breathe and collect yourself after each question. Also, send thank you emails afterwards.

Hey guys, I got offered an interview a few weeks ago for November 29th (stats: 27Q (9,9,9), 3.44). Its my first med school interview so I'm pretty excited!

1) I have not sent in a DO LOR yet, do I need to do that before the interview?

also,

If I only applied to the bradenton campus, can I go back and apply to the main campus as well through aacomas?

Yes you can., but it cost more money to send out a second round (around like 50 more bucks plus the original cost).
med10333 look back like 5 posts and i already answered that question.
Fenix couple more things to add:
1: Costco or sams club membership for the massive amounts of redbull/coffee and highlighters
2: a rolling suitcase instead of a backpack (yes there are that many books according to the people in my PBL group)
3: Gym membership cause you gotta look good for OMM

1) I have not sent in a DO LOR yet, do I need to do that before the interview?

DO LOR is not required before your interview. You must submit a DO LOR after your acceptance but before matriculation.

The earlier you get it in, the better.

They sent us an email saying that they wanted it before the interview now, though there were people in our group that didn't have one yet. From what I gather they won't make a decision before they have the letter though.

Ugggg.
Hey guys. Just got my first letter today and it was from LECOM-B and it told me they didn't want me for an interview.

Cumm gpa: 3.56

Amazing LOR's

Honestly...I am just surprised they didnt even wanna interview me. I keep reading about people with significantly lower stats getting invited for interviews here, and I am confused about why they aren't interested.
More then that though, Im just really crushed that it was my first response and it was a rejection. God this process is brutal. Good luck to everyone...have fun in Florida🙁

Sorry to hear that, I'm really surprised you didn't get an interview, especially since it's still really early in the cycle and your stats look good. Every physician I've spoken to told me that the application process is basically a crapshoot-you'll be surprised where you do get interviews and where you don't. Don't worry about it, the interviews will come. Good luck with your app cycle!

Yeah I've got a rejection and a hold on a couple of school that actually caught me by surprise honestly! keep you head up and it will work out! but man, the one thing I have learned this cycle is just how HUGE of a difference it makes to apply VERY early!

If you have patience, then you COULD send your DO letter after you interview. However, if you don't have that good virtue, the committee meets every Tuesday so if you interview Monday, you can find out if you are accepted that Wednesday if your file is complete. That is wayyy better than having to worry about the DO letter after your interview.

Yes...that OMM. I'm terrified. I think I'm going into 'jersey shore' mode. GTL = gym, tan, laundry. It will be a struggle since I am not a fan of black coffee...must have cream and REAL sugar.

Also, for the Sam's Club membership...there's a wholesale place called BJ's here in Florida. They send out 30 day free membership to new customers. Enough days to stock up on highlighters and red bull Oar. I understand it will give you wings during the exams...so you can fly away.

100% TRUE!!!

I'm not going to say which school; but I am a long time friend/worker with the Dean, others in the adcom, and multiple other faculty/staff at one program and they told me that as long as I don't turn in my application late, I don't have to worry about getting into the program. Needless-to-say, I have received an interview and acceptance at every program I was been complete at for the past 2 months ... except for that one program ... and not even an interview invite. 😕
(Good thing I didn't completely bank on that one program)

Definitely a crapshoot.

Yea.. I guess it really is anyone's guess how these adcoms arrive at their decisions. As I said, I am really just bummed/worried since this was the FIRST program I've heard from and it was a rejection. It makes me wonder, "is there something in my app that turned them off and will turn off other schools?". Obviously its just one school and I shouldn't start freaking out, but I am terrified that when all the dust settles, I will find myself rejected from all 14 DO schools to which I applied.

The whole process just mystifies me. I know I am not the strongest applicant in the world but my stats are above average for LECOM and I have amazing LOR's,. so I just get confused when I see others with much lower stats being accepted and then people with stats like mine are turned down. Really makes you wonder how all of this works. Oh well, hopefully this week will bring better news.

To add on. I recently went to an Admissions 101 seminar that was hosted by the director of admissions and dean of admissions at my university. They answered a lot of questions about the admission process. But their main point throughout the seminar was that most medical schools have transitioned to the "hollistic approach" when it comes to identifying eligible students. I think you have good instincts when you mentioned about reviewing your application when it comes to extracurriculars and personal statement. Your stats are good but like you said there might be something that turned those people off in your application so try to identify it. Not only will you find out but you will boost your confidence when you interview when you know that your application is as good as it gets.

I don't think it's a crapshoot. These schools have been doing this for a long time and they refine their process each year to make sure they get the best students for their program.

Just a quick note. The Admissions committee at my university said that a 17 year old was the youngest student admitted to the MD program. Whoa, I can't even imagine starting that young.

The 17 year old was admitted into a combined degree program, right? (i.e. 3+4 or 4+4 ?)

Anyways selfhealer, I'd call them up on Monday and ask them for details on their decision. If they don't tell you anything, then I recommend doing your own research like Fenix said above.

There's a reason the consensus advice is to apply to so many schools... you just never know what's going to catch somebody's eye. It doesn't reflect upon you so much as on the craziness of med school admissions, where there are way too many qualified folks for the spots available. To paraphrase the Godfather, it isn't personal, it's strictly business. It's cold when you get flat-out rejected from a "safety" school, but that happens to just about everybody. You pick yourself up and you move on.

Yes...that OMM. I'm terrified. I think I'm going into 'jersey shore' mode. GTL = gym, tan, laundry.

I can understand the anxiety, but don't freak out too much. There's a wide range of physique in my OMM lab, with most folks being about average (as you'd guess). I mean, I look like a skinny nerd compared to the bigger guys in my class, but I'm at peace with who I am. In my experience, everybody's been respectful of one other. Mild, good-natured teasing is the worst I've heard from or about anyone in lab. If somebody was particularly creepy or jerktastic, the OMM instructors would have words with them.

Crapshoot is probably too strong a word, but there is an element of randomness in it. As far as Bradenton specifically, they do try to select people who can handle the PBL model, which sometimes means they pick people who can show the extent of their self-motivation, over the straight numbers.

Here's a story that's been circulating among my classmates (presumably originating from one of the faculty) about an interviewee who wasn't accepted: The student had a science-heavy major that happens to be the specialty of one of the faculty members that interviewed him. "What textbook do you use?" the professor asks. "I can't remember," the student answers, "I don't read it. I go by the powerpoints and lecture notes." "We don't do lectures, so how are you going to succeed here if you don't read the book?" the professor asks. Awkward silence ensues.

That student could have had a sky-high GPA and great MCAT, and odds are that professor would have black-balled them. I'm not saying that's right--for all we know the student would have adapted to PBL--but it didn't fit with what the school is looking for.

Just a quick note. The Admissions committee at my university said that a 17 year old was the youngest student admitted to the MD program.

Holy Doogie Howser, batman... You think that's crazy, check this out:

That kid should be graduating soon, at 19 or 20, with an MD/PhD.

Hey all,

Good luck to everyone in the thread, first of all.

Second of all, I will be interviewing at LECOM-b on the 20th and would like to get in touch with people who have been interviewed to get a sense for how it went, what kind of questions you were asked, etc. Feel free to shoot me a PM and I'll send you my email so we can be in touch. Thanks so much.

P.S. or feel free to post it here 🙂

Really? You think that if I call them to ask for details regarding why they rejected me, that they would actually provide me with this information? I assumed that once they rejected you, that was it. If they would give me details regarding their decision I would love to hear them considering I really don't know how they decided against me (not that I was a shoe-in, but as I've said, my stats are certainly above their average stats for those accepted).

I read somewhere that adcom gets together every tuesday, So if I have an interview on Monday, they will decide my faith on tuesday, and I'll know on Wednesday????????

Mr. Shively actually encouraged calling on Wednesday to find out your status if this is where you're wanting to be and you are wanting to save interview/deposit money at other schools.

I received my letter in the mail today... rejected pre-interview. No big surprise since my stats suck. They advised me to take a two semester postbacc at the Erie campus to increase my chances. Ugh, oh well... still waiting on three other schools.

Good luck and congrats to everyone accepted. I'll reapply next year if things don't go well this year.

man so I'm the only person on this forum and SDN that's interviewing on the 18th? No SDNerssssssss! NOOO!!!!

Emailed Annette this morning and heard back: Accepted! I'll be attending.

I interviewed on 1 Oct. I arrived right on time and they took us to the conference room and they had packets with our names on them at our particular seat. The packets have in them the interview order and who are going to be your interviewers. A few welcome words are shared they come in and get the first round of interviewers. I was in first group and the interview was chill. I had no ethical questions or anything wierd at all. One interviewer was smiling and happy the other was stone faced the whole time, but he was fine. One has your file open the other did not Typical Why DO, Why Bradenton, they didnt ask why PBL cause we hadnt seen it yet so I wouldnt worry about that one. How much do I read? Why did you drop calculus twice? Do you want to explain anything in your acedemic record? How will you handle all the work of medical school? Why not MD? Everything was very typical. Mine only lasted about 20-25 min of the 30 allowed. I'm glad they did it right off the bat, it made the rest of the day a lot more enjoyable. The rest of the day is typical, financial aid, lunch with students, tour, and you sit in on a group of 8 students go through a PBL session for two hours which really gives you an idea of PBL. They day was super long and I was ready to get out of there by the days end. If you have any more q's PM me. The day is still fresh in my mind. Got my acceptance letter about 7-10 days later, although you can call and find the next wednesday after your interview.

Yes, they would absolutely give you that information. They know it's in your best interest so that you can improve your application if need be.

wow that's very surprising. I would think with those stats, you would be competitive at almost every DO school you apply to. I would email to find out why they were quick to reject you

congrats and good luck to everyone with interviews coming up!! hope this helps

everyone's super nice so you'll do fine! there were 15 of us, broken into groups of 3s and we started as soon as everyone was there. i would say don't worry too much about how long your interview took because my entire group finished in less than an hour (mine was about 15-20min) when one of the other groups was still on their second person.

i had pretty standard questions (why medicine, why DO, why bradenton, explain any blemishes on your academic record, can you handle med school, pbl etc) nothing really unexpected, and it was more of a conversation. one interviewer had read my file, and the other did not. they did do the good cop/bad cop thing, but don't let it intimidate you!

the interview was followed by an OMM demo (using poor Lauren), full pbl session (pretty freaking awesome - i sat at the table but didn't talk, and the girls i sat next to made sure to show me all the papers that were passed out, and angeled their books so i could follow along), lunch, q&a w/current students, tour, financial aid, wrap-up. it was loong and i would recommend getting there at least 5 min early

sorry for the long post, but i know i would have like to know this before i went in to interview so sharing the love 😍

So has anybody that has been accepted and sent in their deposit received anything else about what is needed before school. The matriculation agreement says we need health history forms, physical exam form, ect. I just want to get a jump on my immunizations while I can get them free through my job.

how long do you have to send in the deposite for LecomB?

does anyone know if having applied to all three campuses would affect acceptance at one campus? i mean, i have an interview at LECOM-B coming up, but haven't received one yet for LECOM-E...i'm just wondering if LECOM-B would not offer an acceptance until after i interview at the one of the other two campuses? or maybe that's not something i'd worry about since I don't have an interview invite at LECOM-E as of now and i'm not sure if I'll even receive one at all from there (lol)?

Thanks!

Has anyone who was placed on hold for a file re-review in 60 days (this happened to me around... July? I think) gotten their file back under review? If so, have you heard anything from them regarding interview/rejection?

Thanks. I am wondering because my portal still says will be re-reviewed in 60 days, but it has been much longer than that.

I applied to both and got accepted to both. I interviewed in Erie in early September and early Oct for Bradenton, they placed my decision on "hold" (though if it was a rejection I doubt they would have held it) until I could see the Bradenton Campus. When I got back from my Bradenton interview I had my snail mail acceptance from Erie.

hmm...then I take it that I shoudn't worry about it since I didn't get an interview invite at both schools? 😳

sitting in the hotel room, preping for tmrw's interview!

Does Wingate provide shuttle service from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to LECOM-B?

Interview invite!! first one!! im really excited to just get an interview. for reference i sent in my secondary 9/22 and just received my invite today for 1/5/11. i know its kinda far away but i didnt get my apps in til late so I'm just thankful to have an interview!! (3.3 science, 26Q MCAT)

Current LECOM-B students: Would any of you know of the current 3rd year rotation sites available for those with a B average where they can stay at that base for the entire year instead of having to travel from one city to another?

I know that there are sites like this up in Pennsylvania, but what are the Florida sites?
