LECOM-Bradenton Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haven't heard or gotten anything. After writing that big check, I was hoping to get something in the mail, but nothing.

I guess its still REALLY early in the game though.

🙂

I didn't get accepted as early as you guys did (late Nov/early Dec) and had my deposit in before winter break. They sent the matriculation packet in early February (when I got it, anyway) and told us to have them done by the end of April. If you got in close to the April deadline, I think they asked people to have it done ASAP, and only really freaked out if you didn't have it done by the time school started. (They check to make sure you didn't miss anything at pre-orientation. Not sure what they'd do if you missed something; probably just ask you to get it done ASAP.)

If you want to look into things yourself, try the Student Gov Association website at www.lecombsga.com. There's some good info on there, as well as reviews of some of the 3rd and 4th year rotations we have available so you can get some sense of that whole mess. If you have specific questions, feel free to PM me or ask on here, though next week I'll be in test-lockdown mode and I may not write anything substantial until after that.

Btw, you know how you have to sit through a PBL session during your interview? I've said in the past that what you do in there won't affect your chances for admission. For extreme cases, I take that back. Try your best not to fall asleep (especially several times) during the PBL session. And please don't spend the entire time texting on your phone (as another candidate did). If you do, the facilitator will probably mention this to the admission committee, and while I don't know how much this would affect your chances, it can't help. I know people travel, get nervous, and can't sleep the night before interviews, and I know listening to us yammer on about renal phys and path for 2 hours isn't the definition of a good time... but with even this school's admissions process as competitive as it is, that kind of behavior gives the adcom a perfect reason to hand you a big, fat rejection.

A few weeks ago, I submitted my MCAT score to AACOMAS, and thus was able to go forward with LECOM's app. I was offered a secondary, which I promptly filled out. LECOM-B made a decision whether or not to extend me an interview and will mail me an answer within a month. I also notice under "Admissions" --> "Required Letters and Credits" there is no "Requirements Not Yet Met" section. On the other hand, LECOM-E is currently reviewing my secondary and the "Requirements Not Yet Met" section is still up. Is this hinting a rejection from LECOM-B? I have not sent any of LORs to either school yet.

Sadly, I did not notice this tab a few weeks back, so I can not comment to whether or not that "Required Letters and Credits" was ever up at LECOM-B.

Thanks,
Mick

Wow...I can't believe someone fell asleep! How are you showing that PBL interests you if you snooze off? And texting during PBL too. That is grim.

I thought I was rather lucky with my PBL session. The faculty member that interviewed me turned out to be the facilitator for the PBL session that I was in. Also, I sat right next to a medical student that was an alumni from my university. He showed me all the previous papers from where they left off so I could read up on it. After the PBL session, the facilitator asked if the two interviewees (me and another dude) had any questions. I asked how they generate test questions from the things that they learned from PBL. I was interested in PBL and I made sure to express that. The other dude didn't ask any questions. The facilitator commented "You were either sleeping or bored." Ouch. The dude laughed it off.

I've sent it my deposit and I haven't received any paperwork either. I'm in the process of determining my living situation. Choices are very slim and expensive. It seems like I have to pay $200-400 more to get the same quality apartment that I'm currently living at in Tampa in Bradenton. I'm thinking about Colonial Grand since it's close and it is a gated community. I will post further thoughts in the other thread.

Congrats to those who got accepted! It feels good celebrating Christmas knowing that you got accepted. Amirite? Hahaha. So I told my relatives to not get me anything and just contribute to my medical education. LOL.

I forgot the person's name who was speaking to us about the alternate list at the school, but she said last year they had around 50 students on the list and accepted about half of them. She said there is definitely still hope if you're put on the alternate list.

Just be sure to accept the alternate list position! And I would definitely show interest through follow up emails.

I believe it was username TheUntold. He got out of that waiting list super fast.

heads up I just emailed lecom-b to withdrew from my interview november 10. Im guessing they wont see it till tomorrow but hopefully one of you can snag an earlier date. Good Luck!

Really?

My wife and I had the exact opposite experience when we moved up here to St Pete/Clearwater area during my last 2 years. In Bradenton we had a VERY nice 3 bed 2-story townhome with patio and 2 car garage for just about the same that we're paying for a 2bed not nearly as nice condo/apartment up here.

Unless the prices are just that much more competitive over in Tampa around the university......

Yeah it depends on what part of Tampa there are cheap areas and expensive areas just like anywhere else really

interview invite 1/31 😀

Congrats!! If you don't mind me asking, when was your Secondary complete? I ask because I have heard it takes anywhere from 3-4 weeks after submitting/the time it was processed. I submitted about 3 weeks ago (LECOM-B), and got an email a little over a week ago saying, "The Office of Admissions at LECOM Erie has processed your supplemental application. You can monitor the status of your application by logging on to the LECOM Candidate Portal."

... is it 3-4 weeks after submitting? Or from the time it was processed?

For me it was 3-4 weeks after it was processed!

Hey guys, I just got accepted to LECOM-B on 10/27. Here are my stats: MCAT 27Q (7P 10V 10B) and 3.6 cum GPA. I am a local guy (born and raised 30 minutes north of Bradenton).

I am thinking about starting a facebook page this weekend. Let me get some feedback from everyone to start one or to know if someone else already has, thanks.

This is the best info I have seen so far on this thread about the interview process. I was very familiar with PBL before I came to the interview and in my personal interview we discussed this in detail. I made it known that I was very attracted to the curriculum. I made an emphasis on the advantages of PBL to all the faculty and I think that's ultimately why I was accepted.

waitlisted, but i don't care. that interview was the weirdest one yet. i'm going to withdraw my app next week so someone else can have a shot! good luck guys.

Interviewed 10/25, Accepted 10/29. Waiting to hear on my top choice, NSU. If accepted there I will not be attending LECOM. Nevertheless, it's still a good school.

What made it the weirdest one yet? I interviewed 10-27. Just curious how your experience differed from mine.

Ouch, alternate list. Anyone know how many people are typically taken off the waitlist, or how many are put on it?

Really liked the school after seeing it, and thought the interview went well. That's disappointing.

interviewer didn't make eye contact with me, showed no reaction to anything i said, and then re-asked the EXACT same questions that the other interviewer JUST asked me.

Sorry to hear that. When I interviewed, only one interviewer made very few eye contact with me and the other one (who had read my profile) was the one that leaned across the table and made eye contact with me. But the whole time that I was being interviewed, I made sure to equally distribute my eye contact between the two interviewers, no matter who asked the question. I managed to get the other interviewer to glance up a couple of times which was enough for me. During my interview, somebody knocked on the door while I was talking! It was one of the faculty and he made a mistake thinking that somebody that he was looking for was in the room with us. The interviewer that wasn't making eye contact was the one that apologize to me for making me lose my train of thought when the faculty member knocked which goes to show that although he wasn't making eye contact, he was paying attention to what I was saying.

I think each interviewer has their own style of analyzing each interviewee. Some just aren't into looking at you while you are talking while others like eye contact. It seems like you just got two that aren't into eye contact. But I can't explain the re-asking of the questions. Maybe they asked it again because you didn't fully answer it the first time? I tend to do deviate from my answer when my mind gets side tracked. Usually comes out when I'm super nervous.

I live in the same quality apartment complex as Colonial Grand here in Tampa. I actually don't live near USF but more to the west. I pay $200 less for a 2 bedroom. I looked into the St. Pete area but didn't find anything good. How long is your drive from St. Pete with morning traffic on I-275? When I drove for an interview, it didn't seem congested, but then again that was around 6 am. I was thinking of the Riverview area too but haven't fully researched the places over there.

I might have to get Facebook now after refusing to get one for the longest time.

But I can't explain the re-asking of the questions. Maybe they asked it again because you didn't fully answer it the first time?

Sounds to me like they wrote out what questions they were going to ask beforehand and they both happened to write down a similar question so when they got to that question on their list it got repeated. I wouldn't over-analyze the interview personally...I was sure one dude hated me and I still got in. Apparently not.

To all the people waitlisted, the LECOM-Bradenton is expanding enrollment for the class of 2015 from 150 to 182 students. It may improve chances for certain individuals. You can read about it here: http://www.bradenton.com/2010/09/29/2613180/growth-at-lecom-college-plans.html

And about the interviews....I am 99% positive they try to do a sort of good cop/ bad cop script with everyone. In my interview they pulled out my transcript and started asking about each of my individual grades. They wanted to know my experience in each class and explain any retakes.

AOA rules/loopholes let them admit an extra 8% of their allotted seats to account for "attrition," so my class (with 150 approved seats) actually started with 162 people + 9 who were repeating 1st year.

With the new rules, they'll effectively have 197 or 198 in each class, if they add 8% as they have been doing. That's a significant increase in the number of 3rd & 4th year rotations needed, and current 3rd years seem to be having enough trouble with their rotations as it is:

Hopefully, her experience is unique, but I want to make sure all of you are aware of this school's imperfections as well as its strong points.

is it true that since LECOM-Bradenton is PBL, the medical students dont get to work with cadavers?

is it true that since LECOM-Bradenton is PBL, the medical students dont get to work with cadavers?

That's actually not true. Our anatomy faculty is adamant that students get some experience with cadavers, although they're only able to secure 4 of them for our class. They (and some 2nd years who apply to be dissectors) prosect the cadavers so that you can come and look at all the structures you need to know.

You can go either way about the cadavers. Either it's great, because you don't have to spend 3 hours de-fatting to get to the one structure you're looking for; or it's terrible, because you don't get to de-fat the cadaver yourself, so you don't have as complete an understanding of the human body. Given that the 1st year anatomy course is 13 weeks long, it's hard to see how they'd have time to let you do all the dissection yourself, even if they had 80 cadavers for us.

I thought it was a decent way to learn, and we had keycard access to the cadavers whenever the building was open, so there was plenty of time to go in and look through the structure lists.

The PBL tracks up at Erie and Seton Hill, to my knowledge, do not have access to cadaver labs, so that might be where this misunderstanding comes from.

The ambassadors said that students can volunteer to dissect in the summer. I would be interested in doing that.

You pretty sold on LECOM? Do you have other interviews yet? I can't remember lol

Nah, I have two interviews this week still (super excited for both), I just want to make sure, cuz since I got the acceptance letter from lecomb I haven't done anything, I'm waiting for this weeks interviews/results before I decide. I just wanted to make sure I haven't missed a step with lecomb.

I talked to student services today they need:

1. 1500$ deposit

2.Matriculation agreement signed

3.Updated address info, if you have not moved yet just right down current address. You can call them and let them know your new address when you move so they know to forward mail to that residence.

When you send in your depost and matriculation agreement, you status on the portal will change to " Congratulations on your acceptance to LECOM Bradenton! We received your matriculation fee and contingency agreement. We will be in contact with you over the next few months."
Congrats on your acceptance 👍

I'm interviewing on Friday Nov 5th, is there a general time frame for a response (reject, accept or waitlist)?

Anyone interviewing on Friday Nov. 5th please feel free to PM me.

Thanks

I'm fairly certain they are upping it to 5 cadavers for next year. Shouldn't be much of a noticeable difference though with the extra student load.

Not sure what I think about them increasing class size...... Much rather see them put the time/energy/money into clinical ed staff and strengthening rotations.

This is true. I'm trying to not allow myself to panic about rotations until after this PBL test.

I interviewed on Wednesday 10/20. They tell you at the interview that you can call back in exactly one week ( I called 10/27) and they let you know your status then as reject, accept, waitlist. You then get your acceptance letter a couple of days later.

I received my acceptance letter on Friday! =) But I am pretty sure I will withdraw. I like PBL a lot, but I think that I need a little more structure. Good luck everybody!

hey guys i am interviewing here next week and its my first one so i was wondering if anyone who has interviewed previously could tell me if/what they brought with them to the interview (im female btw) so i was wondering about wallet, phone, any paperwork, etc

thanks!!!

Hey,

I interviewed recently. It was my first interview as well and I was very nervous. You really dont have to bring anything to the interview. I had my wallet, and cellphone and I kept my luggage in the car. When you walk into the interview you have to sign in with security, he will give you a badge to clip on to your shirt. When more applicants come you than will be walked to a room, you are asked to sit where your name is and you clip that id to your shirt. there is a folder a pen, and a list of the interview schedule, there are most likely 3 students in each group (each group is interviewed by same people individually interviews last from 8-9:30). (there is breakfast, (water juice snack bars) There is a few min talk before the interviews begin, and at 8am the first students are called in. The list of the order in which they interview is on the paper. 20-30 min after the second student is called in and so forth. There are two people interviewing each person. I would go over the interview feedback questions, because they were helpful for me at least. After the interviews there is a talk about anatomy, and than an OMM demonstration, and a lot of other stuff. The first 1/2 hour of the day is stressful (interviews) the rest of the day is very laid back...

Back to your question: I really just brought myself, a pen (they give you a nice LECOM pen so you dont have to bring one) and I had my wallet which had my id just incase they asked for one (they didnt) Two guys did have folder and a note pad with them (i didnt need one) they give you a folder with some info in it so if you really need to write something you could always just write it on the papers they give u. hope this helps, sorry for the typos, im too drained to proofread

Can anyone tell me where I might find housing information on here? I mean current students that will be looking for roommates for next year. Thanks.

Anybody else's portal status page say this. I interviewed 10-27.

"The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days."

Just wondering if that means good or bad official letter...???

thanks again

My status now says that I was selected for an interview, but it doesnt say the date or anything. Anyone know how I find out what date it has been scheduled for? Thanks

they will call you!

i had my interview yesterday and i feel like i got totally rejected.

the person who hadn't read my file seemed to be interested in me till the person who had indicated a couple of bad grades on my transcript and kept asking me how i could handle medschool if i had gotten a c in one upper division class.

i pointed out how i had consistently gotten all a's in 6 classes/quarter in my latter years at a competitive undergraduate institution but they didn't seem too impressed.

what was the point in making me go all the way over there? sigh

now i have interviews at lecom-erie, tucom-ca, tucom-ny, and nsu left but i'm really worried. i'm thinking of applying to more schools. i don't even know if i should go all the way to pennsylvania...i'm afraid they'll treat me the same way the bradenton branch did.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, at least wait till you hear back from the school and see what the results are. ALSO, you should go to all the interviews untill you have an acceptance, just becuase you had a bad experience at one doesn't justify you not going to another. good luck and you will do fine don't worry.
