Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Unfortunately no, I finished my undergrad degree five years ago so the letters I had from then are expired or at the very least....too old? I would think a more recent review of my character would be preferred. What is your take?

I think they want a science prof cause they want an evaluation of you as a student in a science course. But like the others have said, I'd recommend calling the school and get your letters sent before you receive the secondaries to expedite the process. Also, work on the secondaries while you wait for AACOMAS to process your application! I believe the prompts for Marian (and the other schools) are posted but I can re-post them if you'd like. Good luck!

Keep up the hope to everyone still waiting!

Good luck:luck::luck:

What new residencies did Marion say they would establish in the Indiana area during interview day? Are they adding just primary care or are they throwing in some specialization residencies?

There are several hospital chains all over the state that have partnered with Marian to provide funding for the school and are opening up residency spots; I believe that these will be in all the areas of medicine, not just primary care, but someone please correct me if I am mistaken. The larger chains that come to mind are Community, St. Vincent, Deaconess, etc.

They said they would try to add an additional spot every one of St. Vincents programs - which are in several specialties...they also said IU was fairly DO friendly. However, they seemed to indicate the bulk will be in primary care fields.

Crossing my fingers they will accept me.:xf::xf:

New to SDN... I have an upcoming interview at MU-COM. Can anyone give an idea of the stats range for those that have been accepted?

Personally:
sci: 3.29
nsi:3.55
tot: 3.42

It's hard to say because DO schools are notorious for looking at the big picture... Some of your stats are a little low but do you research, volunteer, have you faced adversity, been in a leadership role?

Congrats on the upcoming interview!

This is just my understanding of what you have ahead of you, but it is based on ideas expressed by admissions members at Marian and several other schools. The thought is this:

if you get an interview, they feel confident that you are prepared to take on the rigors of medical school academics. Meaning, your numbers are good enough.

Now, obviously, your sGPA and MCAT are on the low end of acceptable, but you got the interview! Thats really all your numbers do, or at least the main thing.

Now that you have the interview, and this seems especially true at Marian and a few other schools that emphasize similar sentiments, its mostly up to your performance on interview day. You'll want to be well prepared to put your best foot forward, because your stats are lower, but if you do well, you could get accepted or wait-listed for sure! (which is annoying, but much better than rejected)

So, look up MMI's, and get to talking about some common topics so that you can come across as polished, mature, caring, etc.

One last point of advice for you, and anyone else waiting for an upcoming interview, **pay close attention to the short presentation you have just before you do your MMI's. Very pertinent information will be shared with you that can help give you some direction.

In the end...BE YOURSELF...as is commonly said. Have fun! Be your best, prepared self, and dont stress out or over prepare.

Ok, this is getting long, so Ill stop here...Good luck!

👍 both of these posts seem to line up with my understanding too.

Hi all,

I just cancelled my interview for the beginning of November. Good luck to all of you.

You're really missing out on seeing a fab school! But i hope you're happy wherever you're planning on going - is it AZCOM?

NurWollen, a couple of interview slots opened up... may have taken yours. It seems the earlier the better with regards to an interview, albeit one's prepared.

Thanks... that's helpful!

Is there any new information concerning the curriculum beyond what is listed on the website? It looks as though the standard didactic is being modified. I looked up the report that is referenced on MU-COM's website, but it was non-specific.

The curriculum is going to be based on the Carnegie 2010 report, and will be systems based, with didactics in the morning and clinical integration in the afternoon (in general).

I have asked for more details and hopefully they will come soon...

99% sure I will be going to AZCOM. Marian was my only other interview so far, and I've had a bunch of secondaries in since beginning of September. If I get an interview at either of the ATSU's I might go, but I'll probably end up at AZCOM, since it was my #1 to begin with.

Glad to be of service! Good luck on the interview!

This might be a stupid question, but is it a good idea to bring a coat/jacket? Will there be an area to hang ones outerwear or will I end up carrying it throughout the interview day?
Decisions....decisions....
Also, Is there a lot of walking during the tour? Because since the actual building is still being built, what will be toured? And will all the presentations/interviews take place at the library?

Depends on the weather. Today it's pretty nice in Indy so you could do without the coat/jacket. There was a presentation room in the library and we all left our stuff there while we went to the MMIs, so I'm sure they'd let you keep your coat there if you bring one.

I thought so, but I wore heels... bad idea. You go by the construction site, but they'll take you all over campus to see the undergrad schools, gym, and church. The presentations and MMIs all take place in the library. Good luck!

So I am looking at the campus map. How far does the tour exceed? The whole campus?? It seems huge!

And I am a little confused. Once you get to the library, there are 2 or 3 groups of students. Will they separate us initially, or will the presentations start for everyone? I had the assumption that the schedule will differ from each group.

Yeah, it was the whole campus. My feet were killing me afterward.

I was in the third group. When I got there, I hung out with group 2 and 3 people that were waiting. Group 1 went into the MMIs, Group 2 went to the presentation room, and the rest of us just chilled out for awhile. Everyone did their own presentations and such separately, but for awhile the last two groups did hang out together in the waiting area on the first floor.

Awesome...can't wait for the pain...I mean the tour! Well great information BabyDocs! Thank you thank you!

In light of the announcement today (combined ACGME/AOA GME accreditation) I am even more pleased to be attending a school that is set up for the future, and able to create a program now that will fit what medical education will be like in 2017 and beyond.

I feel pretty confident that Marian is well informed about all the changes, and with its seasoned faculty and administration, Im sure they are incorporating this news into our OMS education.

As always, good luck to interviewee's!

I'm sure this brings them closer to IU med as well, and that IU students and Marian students are going to be working side by side in hospitals. This is a win for Marian students because they shouldnt be discriminated from IU's residency programs.

I wonder how IU students feel about this lol.

The main rotation sites won't be at IU Health hospitals, so I don't think they care all that much. There may be some overlap (like the neuro profs coming out to Marian to teach), but as far as 'side by side', maybe for away rotations.

Don't be freaked out, it's awesome! I've experienced a traditional interview format, group interview format, and an MMI - and the MMI was by far the most relaxing, fun, and beneficial for both me and them in my opinion. Good luck 🙂

I don't believe we've heard anything from those who interviewed this weekend. Will they be getting accepted today like the last couple weeks?

When I got the call last week, Bryan said letters and other info would go out in the mail early this week. Has anyone received anything yet?
