Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have more info on how rotations will be setup? It seemed like they would be spread out around the state, and students would have to move for them.

Hoping and thinking this topic will be covered pretty well at the accepted student event on March 9th. Ill bet we'll have more info at that time. 👍

I hope so because I don't know much about them more than their hospital affiliations. Definitely an important subject to cover!

Yes, yes, yes.

Remember, if you have RSVPd for the Accepted Student Open House, MU-COM is inviting you to email your questions to us. We will incorporate everything into our planning, presentations, and/or hand-outs.

Questions should go to Bryan's assistant; her name is Kelly Early at [email protected].

Thanks,

Volume 3 of the MU-COM DOCTOR Series has been moved to next week; however, an email update was sent to all admitted and deposited students. Highlight of the email is the new, revised Year 1, Semester 1 curriculum after the merge process.

Have a good weekend,

Awesome! I was hoping/thinking so. I think we are all looking forward to this event!

For people who have been admitted, I am curious about your stats. I am considering applying here to be in the 2nd class.

Has everyone accepted to other schools in addition to MUCOM finalized which school they'll attend? How long are you waiting to decide?

Unless folks are dropping deposits at multiple schools, I suppose they are deciding within a few weeks this late into the cycle and due to the current 14 day AACOMAS traffic guidelines. I know that there are some that have actually dropped a couple deposits and will be using the New Student program in March as a second look at MU-COM to be the deciding factor.

I know of others (myself included) that were accepted to multiple schools but decided way back at the December deadline that they would be attending MU.

And I am sure there are even others that have decided and are planning to attend MU-COM, but if they were to get pulled off of a wait-list at certain programs, things would change.

Makes sense. I guess things should be pretty much settled by late April/ early May. Although, people can be pulled off waitlist till July for a lot of schools.

PMed you 😀

Definitely waitlist movement all summer long. I would expect the majority of waitlist movement to happen in May since that's when major deadlines are. Especially after May 1st since that's when accepted students have to put down another 2,000 dollars :scared:

Idk if it has been brought up before on the thread, but is there any bias to out of state students? I thought that I read on their website they wanted at least half of incoming students from Indiana.

But I would assume that since it is a private school, there are no obligations to take in staters. Does anyone from Indiana have any insight on this?

This is me just thinking out loud (no real source), but even though they are a private school, they do want more practicing physicians in Indiana. I would assume they have a number in mind of how many students they will have in their class from the state. That being said, there's plenty of people accepted into the class that aren't Indiana residents (myself included). I guess we will only REALLY know when the first class starts.

Yes it's private but its also a significant part of their mission to address Indiana physician shortages and a proponent of this is in state students. Being very familiar with Indiana since most of my family lives there and with the fact that Indiana only has one other med school until MU-COM opens its doors, I think IS interest will increase and with it the quality of applicant applying to MU-COM. Like DrMeows I don't speak for anyone but my own thoughts but I foresee regional preference may get more evident in the coming years.

I agree with the statement I bolded. I bet year after year they will get more in-state students! The first year, they will probably aim for a certain amount but they also need to have a strong first class, as well (which is more important is up to them). Not saying the best students aren't in-state LOL I'm just saying if they don't have as much of a preference there is more to choose from.

I was accepted to multiple schools, I decided on Marian before the December deadline and withdrew from all other schools.

 This is what I feel like these days

I agree with what others have said about IS vs OOS. I think there is an IS bias and it may increase over time, but don't let that deter you from applying if you're OOS. I know many, many students that were accepted who are OOS. IS will always help you, but as long as your stats are good, OOS won't hurt you (in my opinion).

So how would that translate when ADCOMs are looking at apps? Is it just like a nudge in the right direction, like just a plus on the app?

Again, this is just my guess, but I would think if there was a complete tie between an IS and OOS applicant (same MCAT, same GPA, similar ECs) the IS would have a better chance. On the other hand, I don't think that it will give you a significant advantage to be IS... if someone OOS is the better applicant, I would assume they'd be accepted over an IS applicant with much lower scores, etc.
Just my thoughts. 🙂

Maybe MU-COM can chime in here and give you/us a better understanding of the IS bias.

MU-COM's mission is clear: to address the shortage of primary care doctors in rural and under-served Indiana. To do so, some of our students have to come from Indiana and/or to be willing to practice in Indiana. Accordingly, we would like to have 50% of our class to be from Indiana. Even so, there are no quotas for in-state students (or, for that matter, restrictions for out-of-state).

Our goal is to enroll students who are highly qualified for admission (and career success) while ensuring a diverse classroom experience.

Yes, those hours are EST.

Interesting that they never got back to you. I don't think I've gone more than 48 hours without receiving a response from the admissions office when I've contacted them. If you give it another shot via email and don't hear back within a reasonable time for your specific issue, then give them a call. They are super helpful and I'd be willing to bet that there was simply some sort of delivery issue with your original inquiry.

Were you able to reach someone? That surprises me-- I've always received a response within a day or two. Keep trying!

I agree with Mr. Kenobi. This admissions office has been very prompt with any questions I've had. I'm hoping for good news on Thursday!!

Good luck!!!!! :luck: 🙂

Withdrawing acceptance. Hopefully it goes to someone who really wants it. Best wishes for a great first year, guys 👍

So which SDN-ites will be attending the accepted student program next weekend?

Alternate List, 2nd Quartile. Good luck to everyone else.:luck:

First quartile alternate list since January and still no call...ah well, LECOM it is then.

Nooooo don't give up just yet!! At least give it a couple months. First quartile is very promising!! Marian >>>> LECOM (well...I'm a little biased 😉 )

Doesn't first quartile alternate have a high chance of getting in? I'm still waiting to hear, but I think they are filling the second quartile alternate list now.

Wish I could say the same. Still have yet to hear back from LECOM.

When did you interview there? Jamie said you should hear within 30 days, and from what I can see, most people have a decision 2-3 wks after their interview (provided their files are complete).

In my opinion, yes, a good chance. There's what...less than a month left of interviewing? After that they will always be going to the first quartile for people to accept (that's why I'm telling them to wait until spring). I was in the first quartile for two weeks before I got accepted - good things can happen!

Also going off your last statement - is the first quartile full? That's what I'm getting from what you said, or maybe I read it wrong?

I think so, someone mentioned earlier about being in the second quartile alternate list. If I don't get in outright, I hope I at least can get into the 2nd quartile list, so maybe I'd have a shot.

Does the first quartile have to be full before they put people in the other quartiles? I remember someone posting a couple weeks ago that they were placed on the third tier... So I'm not sure...

I don't think that's the way it works. When people are waitlisted, they are informed that they can either be moved up or moved down - therefore, someone later on can be put in the first quartile/potentially move another first quartile person into the second quartile. People are probably getting lower quartiles right now just because the amount of competition there is at this point, not because the first quartile is set in stone.

No I don't think so. People were getting placed into lower quartiles back in the fall too. I'm sure they have some type of system (maybe people are given numerical scores or something and each quartile has its own numerical range?) in order to place someone into a certain quartile. But that's just speculation....no idea how they actually do it lol. To answer your question no it does not have to be full.

Yeah, I just read the other posts, and saw that. That worries me a bit more, but I guess whatever will happen will happen. I just remember seeing a LOT more 1st quartile posts earlier in the fall-jan, so I thought it was based on app time. I think they mentioned that 1st quartile and even 2nd quartile has a good shot, but 3rd and 4th are even less likely. Plus, people can apparently get rejected from the alternate list outright any time, since they review it once a month.
