Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got my phone call on Friday! Incredibly relieved and excited to join this family, I was put on the waitlist back in February, so there is still hope for those still waiting!! I can tell I am way behind though, but I'll get there.

Awesome, congrats!

(and you're not behind on anything...except maybe celebrating. So catch up with your celebrations and welcome to MUCOM's inaugural class!)

Congrats Vumu!!
You're really not behind on anything. All the info we have came from the DOctor series in the portal, or is information from the facebook group. So if you're bored, reading back through some of the facebook posts may give you a little more information. 🙂
:welcome: to the class!

Writing final volume of DO Series ... any information of particular interest?

MU-COM

I agree that I'd like to hear some details about what equipment we should be buying and where we can/should be buying it from. I'd also like to know what our dress code is, if any, or at least what parameters should be followed when coming to class (e.g., wearing non-scrub shirts with scrub pants, particular scrub color we should be buying, scrubs or business attire with white coat, etc.).

has anyone purchased their scrubs yet? and if you have, what colors did you get?

I'm hoping to get by on the scrubs I wear for work but I might buy a few more sets just because you can never have enough! I tried to stick to solids in basic colors like navy, black, blue, and maroon (ok..and pink). If I remember correctly, there isn't a specific color/dress code for anatomy lab. I think they discussed this on the tour?

I'm excited for the final update!

FYI: At the accepted student day, There were MU-COM scrubs in the bookstore (light blue). I already have some scrubs (blue), but may pick up a pair from the books store as well at some point.

I got some scrub pants from the bookstore and I gotta say, they chose a great vendor. Very comfortable/nice material!

Agreed! I'd buy another set if they weren't so pricey (poor medical student= have to buy cheap scrubs) 😉

On a new topic, Anyone a little bummed about the limit on number of guests attending the white coat ceremony? I would like for my siblings, parents, and significant other to all be able to attend, but that definitely exceeds the limit of 4 guests. I just don't want to tell a family member "Yes, this is probably the biggest day of my life so far... but you can't come". I'm not talking about extended family or friends, but immediate family. Anyone else in this predicament? I completely understand if there isn't enough room at the venue, It's just a really unfortunate situation. 🙁

I would love for my wife, parents, siblings, and in-laws to come. They have all been such a great support to me!

But, I think it just comes down to logistics here...not enough seats for them all.

I'm just having my wife and parents come and now after thinking about it, I sort of like the idea of a more intimate white coat ceremony! I mean, graduation will be a party, but white coat feels more symbolic and intimate to me.

But, I can see your point too!

That's true. I mean if everyone brings their 4 guests that puts the number into the upper hundreds already! The more people attending means the more nervous I'll be! Yikes! :scared:
So yes, smaller is nicer, I completely agree. I just feel bad excluding certain family members is all.

Can't believe orientation is in less than 2 1/2 months!!! 😱

I've ordered from rmfscrubs.com in the past for scrubs under $10 a set. How much are the ones at school?

Inaugural class, right? 👍

What'd you guys like most about Marian? Do they heavily favor in-state applicants?

Inaugural class, right? 👍

It is!

Quite a few things for me, but some that stand out are:

-Being a part of something new.
-Their Hospitals and Community (awesome hospitals, and very excited and involved community. Its very unique in the support system it already has)
-MUCOM organization, faculty and admin. They share more than any other school I've seen and have been very responsive to feedback. I def feel like we will be taken care of here. Teachers they have gather are cream of the crop, objectively. Last I checked there were at least 4-5 teachers who write/review for COMLEX (there are only 20 or so total in the country)
-They seem to like technology almost as much as me! MarianCOM and its new building have more resources than any other Ive seen. Very cool.
-systems/competencies curriculum that has been custom built by the above mentioned faculty and staff.
-They value character...when you review their MMI interview strategy, and compare it to the norm, you'll see that they care about who they add to their school. Numbers can get you an interview, but then they actually put value into the non-cognative aspects of their applicant in a very real way.

Those are a few...I think its a rare thing to find all this in a school, and for that school to be so friendly and helpful (and by no means pretentious). Its crazy to find all this in a new school. I'm very excited to be a part of this all.

(oh, and they are private so they don't necessarily favor in state. They will have plenty of in state applicants and students, but thats more due to the number of applicants that apply here. Im out of state and know plenty of other who also are OOS as well.)

Anyone who has recently been pulled from the alternate list, what quartile were you in?

I'd assume they are in the 1st...since the 1st is the highest ranked quartile.

Too bad none of this info is disclosed. It is definitely frustrating for people who can't proceed with their planning and are waiting on the exceedingly lower chance that they might get accepted. Wish this process could be made more applicant friendly, where applicants are given a very realistic idea of their chance so they can proceed with alternate plans or begin the reapplication process. Regardless, it seems like the class is full right now based on what accepted applicants have said.

I agree - but it is definitely nice that Marian is one of the handful of schools that puts you in a quartile you are aware of. It's way more frustrating to be on "unranked" waitlists where you have no idea where you stand as far as a roughly 100-person long list goes. At least u have a rough estimate of your chances here.

Yeah, but who's to say the alternate list is a 100 applicants? And if there are 50 or 70 people in the first quartile or any other quartile?

That's true. My guess would be max 150. The class size is only 162. It's probably reasonable to assume u have a very good shot in the first quartile, maybe a shot later in the summer if ur in the second, and probably not much of one of you're in a lower quartile. Just my two cents. It's the people in the second quartile who are in ultimate limbo though, so I get your point.

I get what you're saying. Applying to medical schools is an extremely long, exhausting process that always leaves you wondering and stressing for months on end. :scared:
But, I think it's awesome that Marian says right out that you're in X quartile. A few schools I interviewed at just said "You're on the waitlist and it will be ranked in June" So you don't know if you're at the top or bottom until June! Yikes! I think Marian is one of the top schools for being applicant friendly. Especially with their timely email responses and participation on SDN! 😍
Unfortunately waiting on pins & needles is the name of the game when it comes to applying to medical school. 😉

Good luck to you Dr Dazzle! :luck:

I know they dont tell us our rank on the waitlist, but do they let us know when we move up a quartile? Or do you think they would tell us if we email them and ask?

I loved reading all of the new information in the newest DOctor series today! But I have to say I'm a little bummed about not getting the names embroidered. Only because I have quite a few friends at various med schools and they all have their names embroidered, so I feel like we're a little behind in that aspect. Just my opinion though 🙂 Loved all the info provided today.. Now I need to go schedule an appointment and get up to date on all my vaccines! 😱

Yes! It was a great new DOctor series! So much awesome info. Love that MU-COM does this for us.

I agree about the name embroidery deal. The friends I have that are in different med schools all have their names embroidered on their coats too, so I found the part about name pins being the convention across the country to be interesting. I believe that IUSM also embroiders their student's names on their white coats as well... as the new kids on the block in Indiana we should be doing everything better 😉. Honestly, it just looks nicer IMO not to mention name tags can get lost etc.

I am, however, very grateful that MU-COM even took our request into consideration!

I agree, Kenobi. Love that MUCOM takes our ideas into consideration! I was amazed at how much information was included in this last update! Just checked out the registration in CAMS :scared: It feels so real now! Loved the details on the final curriculum/schedule, too. SO excited for August! 😍

I found this to be interesting: my significant other goes to a DO school and they didn't even get so much as a name plate at their white coat ceremony (and it was January of their first year). Their school book store offered embroidering for about $10 after the fact. So even though we may not get embroidering AT FIRST, maybe MU-COM can work out a deal for afterwards for when we are in ICM and rotations and such so it looks "more official." Since MU-COM noted that the reasoning for no embroidering was the time crunch, I don't see why this would be a problem 🙂 👍

I think a lot of people (most) would pay $10 for that! I sure would. The only issue I could see with it is uniformity--if some people choose to get their coat embroidered and others don't. Not sure how much that matters though.

For the Immunization form do we still have to get titers done if we've had the required vaccines in the past?

For the Immunization form do we still have to get titers done if we've had the required vaccines in the past?

My understanding is this:

If you have immunization documentation to attach to the MU-COM form showing you've had the shot(s) in the past then you don't need titers for those.

If you don't have/can't get the vaccination documentation for whatever reason, but you know you have had the vaccinations (or actually had chicken pox but dont have proof) then that's when you would need to get the titers to show proof of immunity. Then the titer lab results showing immunity are attached to the MU-COM form in place of the vaccination documentation.

If the titer report comes back not showing immunity then you'll probabaly need to consult your doc and will probably have get those vaccinations.

The Hep C and TB requirements are just tests you will have to get showing you don't currently have either. There are a few options of different types of tests you can choose from to fulfill the TB portion.

As usual, if anyone knows something I don't, feel free to chime in.

Hope that helped!

That sounds pretty accurate to me. I'm going to meet with the doc in a few weeks... Time to be a pin cushion!

Hey Guys!
Accepted a couple months ago. I have a question - I was looking at my AACOMAS application and it states that I have a credit deficiency for Inorganic Chemistry - I, however, took a semester of general chemistry and then another semester of advanced inorganic chemistry. Seeing as how a year is required, will this affect me when I plan to matriculate?

What does it say on the Marian portal? If there's a check mark next to gen chem there I don't see why there would be a problem with matriculation.

I realize this is probably a better question for Ms. Ford, but for those accepted, has anyone else received a letter in the mail about financial aid? My letter says I have an account balance of just over a couple thousand dollars and I cannot figure out why I have a balance outside of the tuition and technology fees. It also says I need to pay it by July 15th. I understand that tuition and fees are covered by loan disbursement in early August, but am concerned that aside from those costs, Marian is expecting me to come out-of-pocket with over $2,000 by July 15th. Does anyone understand this?

I think that is a credit. Meaning it is what you have left over, not what you owe. This happened because of the deposits we put down that go towards tuition.

Ok so this is how I am seeing it... Bare with the rough numbers, I don't have it in front of me.

The Tuition is $21,000

"Manditory fee for medical school" is $750

For sake of simplicity lets call this $22,000 you owe
------------------------------------------------------------

You paid $3,000 (seat/tuition deposit)

You are getting ~$21,500 in loans (minus ~1% loan fee)

Lets call this $24,000 you have

-------------------------------

~$24,000 you have MINUS ~$22,000 you owe = ~$2,000

So like I said, that is the sense I made of it and again those are really rough numbers.

Hope that helps and if you find out something different please share!

Ok that actually makes so much sense. I saw account balance and immediately assumed that was what I owe. Thanks so much for the input. I will be sure to contact ms. Ford to verify and will get back to you. Thanks again.

Any account balance on your bill in "( )" is a credit. For example ($2,387.00). In this case, you would receive a refund of $2,387 when refunds are issued. This, of course, assumes no other charges are incurred for books, parking, etc.

If this does not answer your specific question, please contact Julia Ford or the MU Business Office.

Thanks,

Thanks so much for the response. Ms. Ford told me the same thing today. Looks like you were right, Mr. Kenobi.
