Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would like to comment on this and provide a little different perspective. One of the missions of the school is to produce physicians that serve underserved areas of Indiana. That doesn't only mean rural, but also socio-economically depressed. I personally consider the location a positive aspect of the school because they can be more able to support their mission.

I think their ability to support their mission is more embodied by their borderline boundless hospital connections and support from the community than anything else. I mean the location irked me, but after thinking about it the location of where you do your first two years is the same no matter where you go, it's a 11 by 7 inches long world. I.e a book/ipad.

I get the EXACT location isn't superb, but drive less than 10 minutes and you're in the heart of downtown (which is fabulous) and the surrounding suburbs are beautiful. I don't want people reading this forum to get the wrong idea, by people saying the location is terrible. If i were reading this as someone who had never been here, I would think the location was sketch and/or farmland for miles and miles. It's not!!

👍

It's a very livable area. Dr. meows, I wasn't intending to misrepresent the school, I am just excited about the possible opportunities for pre-clinical experiences in the area.

Exactly why I actually eventually came to realize even the location isn't bad. And the prospect of a 10 minute commute is beautiful.

But like I said, when I first taxied in from the Airport I was really shocked. But then again I'm not used to a Midwestern type city. But like I'll also say, the city is nice and seemed pretty livable.

So who knows.

Yeah I remember the initial surprise of where the school really was, since I never had been to Indianapolis before and had no idea what to expect. But I ended up getting an apartment downtown and my ten minute commute is pretty perfect 🙂 it's so awesome living in the heart of the city!

Exactly, that's my perspective summed up. I think Indy is a good city to start up and as such Marian is pretty cool.

Indiana is a very doctor friendly state as well. Always voted one of the best states to practice medicine.

Im curious what exactly makes a state doctor friendly? Low malpractice insurance? Caps on damages?

Bingo. And from what one doctor told me, the main company that insures doctors in IN (Medical Assurance) is run by doctors and is much more likely than other insurance companies to fight malpractice claims--not just accede the claims and pay up. The malpractice insurance company fights for their doctors and makes sure the cases have merit in court before paying indemnity (many malpractice insurance companies won't take cases to court first).

I've heard Indiana has the lowest (or one of the lowest) malpractice insurance rates in the US.

One doctor I shadowed said they'd moved from Pennsylvania to Indiana largely because of malpractice insurance (which had gone up by 500% and is horribly expensive/almost unaffordable in Pennsylvania).

Canceling my interview. Hope it goes to someone in the sdn family.

After reading many posts on this thread and reading a few online brochures, I think I will try submitting a secondary here. Does anyone know if it is too late? GPA ~3.6, MCAT ~29, lots of clinical experience, lots of volunteering, etc.

Does anyone know if getting a letter of rec from your academic advisor is okay? I emailed the pre med advisor on campus and they told me to ask my primary advisor. I already have two science faculty letters.

I wonder how many of last week's 56 interviewees the Admissions Committee will review and and make final decisions on today. 😳

I think it's still pretty early in the season. I would definitely submit a secondary if I were you. Good luck!

I think they said they meet Tuesday and send out decisions Thursday. They also said they might not get through everyone this week, so we could hear next Thursday as well.

The MU-COM admissions committee meets on Thursday mornings. All decisions are released within 3 business days of the committee meeting.

Saw this handout today in the admissions office. Includes some stats that may be of interest to prospective students. 🙂
Edit: Can you all see this info or is it blurry for you?

II today! The 1/3 accept post interview is disconcerting though... Really want to stay in the Midwest!

My secondary was marked as complete today. How long do you have to wait until you hear anything back?

Man, Dat average science GPA.
Firstly, remember that it is an average. Secondly, I'm sure the school wanted solid science GPAs, especially for the first class. Of course, this second point is purely a guess.

Hey everyone, just wondering if they interview on saturdays? thanks : )

Does any one know if they plan to increase class size over the next few years? I know most DO schools have sizes in the 200s.

If/when an increase happens, it will not take place until after our first class graduates in 2017.

I am hoping to hear some good news tomorrow too! I interviewed on Saturday, and was very impressed with the new building.
