Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed recently and they said if you're waitlisted and want to write a letter of intent to tell them why you want to attend Marian. They said don't repeat your personal statement or why you want to be a doctor. It's supposed to be specific to Marian and the reasons you want to attend this school. Just what I remember, but maybe MU-COM admissions will respond to your post on here. Your safest bet is to contact Bryan Moody, though.
Thanks! This will help

For those who attended the open house last year, do you have any recommendations for what to do in the area during the weekend?

Hello all, I interviewed at Marian a little while ago and got waitlisted. But after going to other schools I'm certain that I want to attend Marian. So my question, to anyone who can answer it: I want to write a letter of intent but I not sure if the COM is looking for anything specific. Could anyone let me know if they are.
Thanks

A letter of intent is a non-binding way to state the reasons why you are a good fit for MU-COM. It is also an opportunity to address any deficiencies in your application. It is not a restatement of everything we've already seen though. Please address them to the committee and send to [email protected].

Hello...Did anyone get accepted off the alternate list yet ? came to know about couple of alternate list reviews - wondering whether someone here did get through off the wait list yet ??
Thanks

We review the alternate list about once a month, which is why postings would be lower. Nonetheless, we have admitted from the alternate list this year.

My biggest advice is housing search. That was all I did the entire weekend I was here and it still wasn't enough time. Was nice to just drive around and get to know the city, too.
Otherwise it depends what you're into-- there are some cool areas for bar hopping, great restaurants downtown, canal walk downtown, etc.

I just sat in my hotel room the whole weekend rocking back in forth in the fetal position dwelling on the fact that Indianapolis was where my life as I knew it would end. 😉

But seriously, what buddy said pretty much sums it up.

Absolutely! Heard back from both schools within a day of each other, feeling quite blessed. I've started "The Spreadsheet"... 🙂
Ah the old spreadsheet...feel free to message me if you have any questions that you feel I could help with and good luck with deciding. I know how tough it is.

Question regarding living spaces.
Does a majority of the current 1st years live with roommate(s)?
Also, where are some of the 'designated' student living areas in Indianapolis?

TIA

Information about on-campus options will be released this week for admitted and deposited students. Off-campus options will be released next week.

I would say most either live with roommates or with their significant other. Like MUCOM said, they'll give you more info about this. There are no 'designated' areas, except on campus. However, there are apt complexes that several students live at. If you're in the 2018 Facebook group, current students have discussed this at length.

Halfway through the waitlist-waiting...congratz to those who have and to those who will be pulled from it. I hope that I am among you. :angelic:
I would hate to have to quote Bill Paxton at the end of this cycle in reference to my situation. :beat: (may this emote be a hint)

Agreed, I would love to join MUCOMs class.

Does anyone know if Marian's Medical school will ever open up a Special Masters program for the Med school?

They are beginning a Biomedical Sciences Masters program this Fall, 2014.

Edit: Here is a post from admissions in this thread from several months ago confirming:

Good luck to everyone applying for admission to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program at Marian University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (MU-COM) for the entering fall 2014 class.

In addition to the DO program, MU-COM will start a graduate program in BioMedical Sciences for fall 2014. More information on both programs, including admission and application requirements, will follow in the future.

Request more info at http://marian.edu/osteopathic-medical-school/admissions/student-inquiry-form. Finally, save the date of September 6th for our fall open house.

We appreciate your interest—and trust in us.

Thanks man.

Do you know if it is meant to be a primer for the DO program with linkage like other schools have?

The intended start date for our Biomedical Sciences program is August 2014. Since this is a new program, detailed information (brochures, curriculum, and admissions criteria) is not available yet. Once it is, we will update the website. This will not happen, though, until March 2014.

Otherwise, the program will be similar to the certificate model currently used across the country.

Thank you for the prompt response.

If I am understanding you correctly, the Biomedical Sciences program is not meant to be a 1 year master designed to help students get into Marian University's Osteopathic program, but instead, it is meant for people wanting a masters for further education/employment opportunities?

Incorrect.

The certificate model used across the country is designed to help students get into medical school. Our program will have 2 tracks: this certificate and a terminal masters for those who want to do industry research. More info will be available in March.

Will this program be located in the Evans Center, as well? Wondering if this will be yet another burden to our lack of parking and studying space.

The program will be in the Evans Center.
On parking: There are enough parking spaces for 1st and 2nd year students; plans are to add another lot, though, to ease the situation.
On study space: Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever have enough study space to satisfy the demand.

Welcome to the club.
I know MU-COM won't provide more information, and I think I understand why. However, I am in the second quartile as well, and my inability to quantify and analyze my position is difficult.
Best of luck to us all, the wait listed few/many...

Well you got your information later, I was second quartiled early and at this point could be either 1 or 4. Who even knows.

Thanks for your patience with the alternate list. If you did not see the post earlier in the thread, here's a fact for you: 18% of students who were placed on the alternate list between October and mid-May are in the inaugural class.

Around the middle of April, applicants who are still on the alternate list will be asked to "confirm" your interest. By confirming, you will remain on the list for the committee to pick from after the May 1st tuition deposit deadline.

How good/safe/reliable is the public transport system? (IndyGo ?) I'm trying to decide if I could survive the first semester or first year without a car and postpone buying one until the summer or 2nd year.

Also, is there anyone on here who's a MUCOM student living on-campus? How do you like the living arrangement? Is there a roommate match system or do we find our own roommates?

I personally don't know anyone in our class who uses IndyGo, so I'm no help for you there. I believe most, if not all, students have a car.
Regarding chatting with someone who lives on campus, it may be helpful for you to join the FB group and ask current students on there. 🙂

You are encouraged to have a car simply for convenience. For example, as a part of the Meaningful Medicine Mentor Program, you will need to get around town to see your physician mentor. More info on IndyGo including maps and schedules can be found at http://www.indygo.net/. There are 2 stops near the MU campus.

If admitted, you are encouraged to attend the Accepted Student Open House to view the on-campus living options personally--and to talk to current students. MU-COM does not provide a roommate matching service. The Class of 2017 organized their own roommate service via their Facebook group. The Class of 2018 is encouraged to do that same.

I took a look at the maps on IndyGo, and it seems that the routes are pretty widespread. I was just concerned about the safety and reliability in the timing of the buses. But I think it makes more sense to have a car, especially to get the most out of the mentorship program. Thanks for the response MU COM and Buddy The Elf

Also, I noticed that deposits for on-campus housing are due before Accepted Student Open House. I (and I'm sure many others) would like to take a look at the facilities before I put money down. Is that a flexible deadline? It would really help to have a deadline after the Open House because it will also allow us time to potentially meet future roommates.

The deadline is flexible, but the sooner the better.

Just a friendly suggestion...but Indianapolis is a commuter city. To do most things that are worthwhile it requires traveling to all corner of the city which is 10 miles in diameter. Just my humble opinion, but car or a friend with one is a neccisity in our city.

I totally understand, thank you! I think I am spoiled after having spent time in Chicago and DC and using their public transport systems extensively. I most probably will buy a car and add to the loans I have to take out 🙁

Get used to taking out loans now, it's never-ending 😉

Thanks for that response - But, unless there is a "count" associated with the percentage, this number does not give any information, or a fact. It could be 18% of 50, or 100, or 200...
So are there any numbers to substantiate on this 18% of "?", so that it is really a usable "fact!".

Is it possible that a person can move down that way ?

Who knows, i've never been on a waitlist so I couldn't say that I know either way. Personally I've heard news of people who were in second quartile getting in from the last year's thread, but with limited information it really becomes a waiting game.

Is it possible that a person can move down that way ?

Yes. When I was at my interview, Bryan Moody told us that you can move up and down the list during the cycle based on the people they waitlist after you. He said they will only tell you your quartile when they initially waitlist you, but you could move after that, and they won't notify you.

Then, I fail to see the point of quartiles, especially in the very beginning. Sure there can be quartiles, but why notify the applicants of their placement? I know a few of us who were placed in the first and second quartiles in the beginning of the cycle. To be moved up and down afterwards without being notified is both pointless and kind of cruel.

The inaugural class size is 162 so 29 students came off the waitlist last year.
