Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm curious if anyone has actually been accepted or not lol. I get the feeling they just put everyone on the wait list lol.

What quartile did you get placed in? I'd say if it is quartile 1 this early then you're probably in a good spot.

Nothing here yet..not even sure whether that's a good or bad thing. Hoping for a call sometime today

Yeah, I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we were the first group interviewing. I'm guessing the school wants to get a better look at the other applicants, perhaps simply October, before filling many actual seats. Getting the numbers right for a school is a tricky business.

I enjoyed the school though. I'd choose to go there if I eventually get off of the wait list. I hope to know sooner rather than later though. I'd like to avoid depositing at a second choice only for the opportunity to open later. Only time will tell.

Good luck to everyone.

Yeah, last year when I was accepted early in the cycle, people seemed to be getting outright accepted each week…but you may be right. They may be taking a different approach this year…but I'd assume they already have thousands of apps and have a decent idea of what they are looking at right now.

I'm apparently in 2. But who knows what that actually means. Either way while I was impressed with the school it's too early for me to actually say or think anything.

Similar to NSU this year?

Maybe, MUCOM already is openly saying they'll be extra picky this year. So who knows just what the situation will be like. But who knows, it's still early in the game.

I was thinking along the lines of having more interview scores to compare. I'm sure they know what they have on paper. In any case, it seems more applicants are being wait listed over being outright accepted up to this point. If I recall correctly, applications are up 40% this year, and the school is interviewing fewer people, too.

I feel I'm in a good spot though, just in limbo for the time being.

I'll just have to keep myself occupied until another e-mail arrives. That's the fun part.

Same, rejected here. Got into my #1 and #2 schools so not too heartbroken over my #5.

In reply to the bevy of posts, applicants from the first interview weekend were admitted, rejected, and placed on the alternate list. In fact, once candidate was already admitted from the alternate list.

We do not release any numbers about selectivity or quality metrics until the end of the admissions year.

As mentioned during the interview days, we admit applicants who are most highly qualified. If you were placed on the alternate list, you are deemed to be admissible but not most highly qualified at this time. We will revisit the alternate list at least once a month. Finally, 1st quartile is most competitive; 4th quartile is least competitive.

In closing, the only update that we accept from alternate list candidates is a letter of intent, which you can forward electronically. All other updates should go to AACOMAS so they can update your primary application.

We hope this helps.

Guys if you got waitlisted this early in the game try not to fret! I interviewed the first day last cycle, and was put on the first quartile of the waitlist. I was accepted about 2 and a half weeks later. When MU-COM says they review the list approximately once a month they aren't lying. If you're truly interested in coming here show that to them. I agree with Kenobi above that if you are in the first quartile you are probably in a really good spot at this point. Good luck, and sorry to the people who got news they weren't hoping for 🙁

Hi I'm an Indianapolis resident and I know this might not be the appropriate thread to ask this but I wanted to know what my chances of admission to MU-COM are with my stats? I will be applying this week. Stats are as follows:

cGPA: Approx. 3.5
sGPA: Approx 3.5
MCAT: 31

Please let me know if anyone has any idea thanks!

No one can tell you what your chances of gaining admissions to MU-COM are…however I'd venture to say that your chances of getting an interview are probably pretty good from a purely stat-based perspective…chances are even better if the rest of your app is nice as well.

I submitted my secondary 2 days ago and letters 3 days ago. How long will it take for the letters to be updated so my application can be complete?

It can take up to two weeks. When your letters are added to your application, you will receive an acknowledgement email from us.

Thank you for the reply! I have about 200+ shadow hours,100+ volunteer hours and 2000+ research hours so I would like to think I have a decent application! I'll submit my application today and hope for the best 🙂

Thank you for the reassurance and for sharing your personal experience with the process.

I was ACCEPTED!!! 😀 I interviewed the first day and I was ECSTATIC when I got the phone call from Mr. Moody. Keep your chin up guys you'll make it! I fell in love with the school and the campus as soon as I walked in. 🙂

Question to MU-COM
When will the portal update for the accepted students?

I googled mmi interviews and found some solid information. A lot of Canadian schools use it so their sites helped.

I received email of complete status today. Does anyone know how long it takes to get ii call. I desperately want an ii call from my #1choice. MU COM pls show me some love.

I submitted mine on a thursday or friday and had an II on the following monday...it was a very fast turn around.

May defer my interview for next week due to prior acceptances and that I'm getting poor. 😳

Hey guys! I interviewed here last cycle and would be happy to answer any questions regarding interview day. Good luck, everyone!

Hey!

I have an interview at Marian this October, I know the format is multiple mini interview plus an open-ended discussion with faculty. I would like to know what time of questions to expect specifically?

Are they along the lines of "what would you do if your patient is a child who requires a blood transfusion, but the parent's are Jehovah's Witness's, and do not believe in blood transfusions?"
or "how what do you know about the Affordable Health Care Act?" or something else?

Did you get the feeling they were just trying to get to know who you are as a person, or are they more aggressive than that?

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it!

None of the questions involve topics you need in-depth knowledge about (like the ACA). They're more "What would you do in this situation?" Just to see you thinking on your feet and how you would think through things. If you don't understand exactly what they're asking, just ask them to repeat it or say that you're confused with what exactly they're asking. The interviewers are not trying to grill you or make you stumble. The questions may be difficult to answer but they're just to get a feel for you, your personality, the way you think through problems, etc.
I googled MMI questions ahead of time and tried to prepare... but really there's no good way to prepare for the MMI. Collect your thoughts before speaking, ask for clarification if needed, and just be yourself!
Good luck! :luck:

ii for Nov 15..chose the Blue group whatever that means

The two groups, gold and blue, are just there so that the interviewees can be divided up. While one group goes through the interview process, the other group goes on a tour of the school.

Good luck.

Is there a 2018 facebook group yet? 🙂

So once you make it to the interview is your acceptance/denial based mostly on your interview performance?

Last year I was interviewed then rejected based on grades.
Do your best with the interview but everything still matters.
