Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh wow. I'm doomed.
Don't get discouraged my friend. It's more than just stats. I am going through a rough patch right now with family issues so I am pretty sure I botched my interview.

It's a long process, I am sure you will be fine.

I hope so. MUCOM is a top choice of mine. I hope things work out for you and your family.

Anyone else interviewing on Nov 8th with me?!

I'll be there the 9th! Finally haha. I'm getting really nervous... on one hand, I'm really glad the interview is simply about YOU, not your stats. On the other hand, that makes me nervous in case I mess things up. I really want a chance to choose this school, but I feel like so many people are getting rejected! Def way more nervous for this than other interviews.

Don't be nervous first of all. But pretty much every school the interview is about you, not your stats. (I don't think I have heard of a school where that is not the case.) But at the same time, I have talked to at least 5-6 people who said that they were told they interviewed really well, but because of their stats they were not accepted to MU-com.

For those that are accepted how do you find what quartile you fall into?

I assume you mean for those who are wait listed. If you received a waitlist decision they tell you which quartile you are in. If you are accepted/rejected there are no quartiles. That's their final decision.

Hey,
I have a Nov 9th morning interview, and I'll be staying at a hotel nearby the airport.
Does anyone want to split the cab with me?
Please message me if interested. I'll be at Extended Stay America.

Cheers!
Rachael

Got the acceptance call today!!! 😀😀😀 It was at a very "inopportune time"-- I read about that happening to others on here but never thought it'd happen to me haha. I'm so excited my hands are still shaking haha

Congrats.

Does anybody know which hotels have a shuttle service to and from the airport and school? Appreciate it.

I've heard good things about this school lately. Is it too late to add to my primary and give it a go?

I've stayed in the baymont inn on eagle view drive during both of my interviews and they had a shuttle to and from the school and the airport. I'd definitely recommend that hotel

You can also try über car, I haven't gotten the chance to try them out myself but I've heard good things and I know they have cars in Indy. If you want PM me for a code that gets you 10 bucks off

Seriously don't be nervous. Last year I was told the same thing and didn't believe it, but I think that being nervous was what messed me up at that interview because my mind blanked ad I started rambling. Just think about all the stuff you've been doing over the past few years (shadowing, classes, volunteer work, etc) and about why you learned from those experiences and you should be good imo. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions that can put your mind to rest and I'll be happy to help if I can!

Was that the hotel formaly known as the Jameson Inn? The information Marian sent seems outdated if that is the case.

Gave up my interview slot, hopefully one of you guys gets it, and good luck to everyone!

Yes it is. That caused a few moments of confusion haha. I think it's now called Baymont Suites Indy West

Lol thanks.....do you know if the shuttle service runs 24/7 to and from the airport? Did you have any difficulties scheduling the shuttle to/from the school?

For those that have already interviewed at MU-COM.... Do we get the campus tour and info session before we interview? Or do we interview first before everything? Thanks!

It depends on what group you are in. Everyone arrives at the same time and the early group interviews first, tours second while the later group tours first and then interviews.

Question.
Is there any kind of fellowships @ Marian during medical school? For instance, like AZCOM's OMM fellowship at 3rd year (medical school becomes 5 years, but year 3,4 and 5 are paid, including food and rent)

During orientation week, they mentioned a program like this. We haven't gotten anymore details about it yet but as far as I know they do intend to have something similar.

no, the shuttle i believe begins at 7 am but idk how late it goes because ive only gotten there around dinner time at the latest. during my interview a week ago i had to get a taxi in the morning to get to my 4am flight, but really the shuttle has not caused me any problems. I made the shuttle reservation way in advance and forgot to call them to remind them as i was flying in, so i called them when i got to indy and they sent one right away (it took about 15 minutes to get there) no questions asked.

A lady i spoke to on the phone said they dont do shuttles to the school but when i got to the hotel I had no problems scheduling one to the school. I also called after my interview was done and they came and picked me up, which was really nice.

PS the drivers accept tips and are really friendly and conversational, so be sure to give em a few bucks 😉

Those of you who had an interview recently, did you have "role play" or teamwork activities as part of your MMI ?! I just want to know what to expect 😉 Thanks

There were no role-playing or teamwork stations. Just ethical scenarios where you had to verbally discuss it with the interviewer. Pretty straight forward and overall very enjoyable, actually.

Quick question for current students:
On the financial aid email I received I saw that there's a "live on-campus." I was wasn't aware that there was graduate housing at MU and no one mentioned it at the interview. Do you know if any or many students take advantage of the on campus living? where can I find more info on this. I really wish MU-COM updated their website more often.. it hasn't been so resourceful 🙁

Flying in tomorrow and going to the Bulls @ Pacers game. Woot!

I feel there are a decent amount of people that live on campus, not sure the exact number though. They gave us more information about stuff like that after the deposit deadline and closer to the accepted students weekend (which I believe is the beginning of March for you guys). You can always call and ask for information. The things that personally turned me off from it was the fact there were no single rooms, and the housing really isn't that far from the football field, so I was worried about it being loud. Idk if anyone that lives on campus checks SDN so maybe one of them can chime in!

I'd have to agree with Meowser on this one. I don't live on campus but I know several students who do. I believe they are planning on construction another building specifically for graduate housing, but I don't know much about it. They'll give you a lot more info about housing in the portal series that they send out periodically. No worries this early, there's plenty of time for you to find housing. I didn't find housing until 1 month before moving! It'll be discussed more next Spring when deposits are paid and all that. Housing is not a huge issue here in Indy (IMO). Lots of good housing within a 10 minute drive. Apartments right downtown that are close, houses to rent/buy that are affordable, and gated apartments that aren't too incredibly expensive. All within a reasonable driving distance. Hope this helps! 🙂

There are about 20-25 COM students who live on campus in either campus apartments or suite-style residence hall rooms. Info will be in volume 4 of the Advantage Series, which will be launched in about 1-2 weeks.

We are also starting a review of on-campus housing this month with the goal being to build new graduate housing. Stay tuned.

Does MU have a significant area preference or is there a good chance for international students.

MU-COM

Hi MU-COM,
Are interviewees allowed to bring a piece of paper to jot down their ideas for the MMI?

Just got the email... Alternate list, 2nd quartile :/ Bummer. Hopefully it'll see some movement though! Congrats in advanced to those who will be receiving calls today!

I was actually curious, how does the addition of other people to the waitlist affect those already on it? I mean lets say someone from the first interview day is put on the waitlist and in a 3rd quartile or so, will the addition of more people over ranged stats and reviews change the composition of the quartiles? Will the person in the 3rd suddenly potentially find themselves either in the 4th or in one of the lower quartiles as more people are added? Or will they remain in that quartile and simply compete with those who were put in that quartile for spaces opened up in the lower ones?

Congrats to all of the acceptances! I just reviewed their website and virtual tour, and I'm very excited to be submitting my secondary application this weekend (better late than never...).

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but can some speak about Marian's study spaces and library? They briefly touch upon community study areas in the video, but I'm having trouble finding info about individual study spots and their med school library (do all students use the Mother Theresa Hackelmeier Memorial Library? Or is there a separate med/nursing library?).

Also, if anyone has a link or info about their student clubs/organizations other than intramural sports, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance. Good luck to everyone who is applying! 🙂

Unfortunately I can only give you a somewhat negative review of the study areas. There are maybe 20 individual study rooms. They range from 4 chairs up to like 12 person rooms. Most days they are completely full of students. Some with a group of students studying and some with only 1 or 2 students in them. Also, we share the building with the nursing school and that just adds to the number of people trying to use these rooms. It is a tolerable situation this year but next year it will be difficult to find quiet study areas. We also have a few common areas with comfy chairs to study, but if you don't like being around noise or get easily distracted, those are not ideal. The med school does not have it's own library since we are a paperless school. All our books are on our iPads and we have access to a virtual library filled with books. The campus library is usually full of undergrad students so I only go there when I absolutely have to (only 2 individual study rooms over there, too). They are building an alumni center right now that should be opened next summer so that should help with having some extra study space. So it's a little frustrating to me, but some students may not have a problem with it. Depends how you prefer to study. Some students study off-campus all the time or at coffee shops. Personally, I prefer to study on campus in a study room.

Our student orgs are getting up and running now. Basically, you name a club and we have it. (SOSA, FM, Peds, volunteering, Timmy Global Health, SGA, SOMA, SAAO, etc etc). And I know there are intramural sports here, but I'm not involved in them so I can't give you a lot of detail on that. I do know that the med school has 2 flag football teams that play weekly though (vs the undergrads).
Hope this helps!!!! 🙂

I enjoyed Marian. The MMI format was definitely unique. The questions for the most part were a good assessment of how a student can think on his or her feet.
