Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Regarding the entering 2015 class, MU-COM has added three additional prerequisites: biochemistry, psychology, and sociology (3 credit hours or 4 quarter hours in each).
  • The biochemistry prerequisite is lecture only. There is no minimum level (100, 200, etc.) but the committee will consider the degree of difficulty as it does with all completed coursework.
  • MU-COM does not allow substitutions. For example, biochemistry cannot be used for biology.
  • MU-COM does not render decisions on whether or not a class satisfies the prerequisite unless the applicant is admitted. Until a final decision is rendered, we default to what is reported on the AACOMAS application.
  • MU-COM will review anthropology classes on a case-by-case basis for sociology. However, a sociology course will better prepare the applicant for the Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior section of MCAT 2015.
Admissions

Dear MU-COM Admissions,

I am a new SDN member and I joined specifically so that I can ask a question about the Sociology/Psychology requirements. On my AACOMAS application for MU-COM, they list 6 required hours of Behavioral Science and also show that 2 of my courses satisfy those requirements. However, the courses listed as meeting the requirement are not Sociology and Psychology. Does that mean that the Sociology and Psychology requirements have been met with those two courses?

I do not intend to enroll in a Sociology or Psychology class before matriculation, however, I have been invited for an interview and want to know if I should attend, assuming my courses are accepted as listed on my AACOMAS application, or whether my effort would be futile without the exact Sociology/Psychology courses as listed by MU-COM?

Thank you for being on this forum, and answering questions about the application process!

Only two more days for those of us that interviewed last weekend!
I love the quick turnaround!

Unless of course they don't get to your app and you have to wait another week, but hey we gotta stay positive right? lol

You have to complete 1 course in psychology and 1 course in sociology before matriculation to matriculate.

They are strict on that.

I actually called them this morning and thankfully, they said they will accept my courses since AACOMAS listed them as fulfilling the requirement. Now time for me to prepare to ace that interview! 🙂

How does getting transportation from the airport to the hotel/university work? I was told there is a bus that would take me downtown.

Highly like there will be bus from airport to downtown. However, If the hotel you will stay is at downtown area, you may have to arrange some transportation from hotel to MU as it is not that close to downtown in my opinion.

Make sure you were clear.

Unless your aacomas app says you have a course that specifically satisfies SOCIOLOGY, then NO you have not satisfied the requirement.

They explicitly told me that even if you have 6 credits of behavioural science on your aacomas, 3 of those MUST be sociology.

You could be in a situation that satisfies 6 credits of behavioural, but 3 of those MUST come from sociology.

I would make sure you explicitly told them and they had your app infront of them to decide. It will be much easier now, then to find out later you still have to take a sociology course.

And if for some reason they are waiving the 3 credit Sociology requirement, for 3 credits of some other behavioural science, then let the rest of the users on here know, so it can be fair and equitable across the board.

But good luck on the interview!

While MU-COM believes applicants will be served better throughout their career if they take sociology and psychology, it has been decided recently to honor the letter and the spirit of the behavior science prerequisites for this year only. For this reason, the following will be acceptable:
  • 3 soc and 3 psych
  • 6 soc
  • 6 psych
  • 6 behavioral science
Our clear preference, as indicated on our website and in our viewbook, is 3 credits of sociology and psychology. All applicants are encouraged to review their AACOMAS application to see if deficiencies exist.

Hope this helps,
Admissions

No. Primary application deadline is March 1, 2015. Interviews just started and will continue until mid-April. Spaces are available in our class as long as we are interviewing.

On the secondary, there's a question that asks about an undergraduate pre-medical advisor. It asks for name and address. Does it mean the actual address or email address? I find it strange that they would ask for an actual address

Also, when it says for the shadowing question "describe the experience (name & location of hospital/clinic, name & specialty of physician, and amount of time spent shadowing)", do they really want us to describe what we learned, how it was, etc. or do they just want us to list what's in the parentheses?

I put the actual address of the school's department

It's a pretty small field, yes? Put the information they're asking for and add to it if you have space and feel it's relevant.

Does anyone know which day of the week MUCOM downloads LORs? I know that LORs are downloaded once a week, but I would like to know which day 🙂

It varies. Unless your file is already complete, you will receive an email from us when we download your letters.

Thank you 🙂 I am complete with everything but LORs and sent them last Thursday, so I was curious.

Nothing yet. Perhaps they are sending it out at the end of the day. I think I will just stare at my phone until then.
Another solid way to pass the time is to hit the "send/receive" button on your email app repeatedly. Refreshing SDN every 6 seconds is also pretty good.

Another week of waiting... just got this email:

This is a quick email to let you know that the committee did not review your file this week, due simply to the volume of files to review. You will be first on the agenda at our next meeting, which is September 25.

Thank you MU-COM for the communitcation though!

Congratulations! Does this impact how you feel about KCUMB?
Heh not terribly much... the phone call was kind of awkward because I think the person on the phone was expecting me to like scream or cry or faint or something out of joy...

Which dont get me wrong, I am thankful... but idk... maybe I need to visit the school again or something, or get in more contact with some of their current med students. I guess to just put it frankly, I had a better experience at KCUMB.

Well it's surely nice to have choices.

Anyone else not hear anything either way? Bad sign I'm guessing if they mail rejections

Decisions are sent electronically starting today and finishing no later than Monday. We have a three business day rule after committee meetings.
