Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
But I was originally put on hold like, 11/1 if you wanted to know

Lol thanks. I was complete on 10/23 and still haven't heard anything- I'm getting a little discouraged.

interview decisions are taking a little longer at this time of the year. 3-4 weeks on average.

II just now! So am I correct in seeing that there are no interview openings until February?

correct, but ... you can be added to an ASAP list for an earlier interview if cancellations occur, which they do. for more info, contact Bryan at [email protected].

the other reason interviews are scheduling in February right now is that there is only 1 interview weekend in December and 1 interview day in January. there are approximately 300 more interviews between now and the last weekend in mid-April. please note, though, that seats exist as long as we are interviewing.

you are encouraged to check your spam folder or the communication log in the portal. the oldest file waiting for an initial interview decision is 10/27.

MU COM are you saying that I should email that address if I want to try to get another date?

That 7 could be a problem, but maybe not. Maybe it is in spam or it is coming up soon

Will the Admissions Committee meet and notify accepted students next week (i.e. week of Thanksgiving)? Thank you.

Could a current student please elaborate on the general class structure/exam schedule?

From the campus visit, it sounded like there's a lot of class time during first semester because of anatomy/anatomy lab. Also, I overheard someone saying that it's a block schedule, but instead of exams every few weeks like most med schools, there are exams every week... Is this true? Any insight on what the day-to-day, week-to-week grind is like would be much appreciated.

P.S. Sorry if someone mentioned this before, but I couldn't find this answer on any of the previous threads. Thanks!
I am an OMS1, so I'm not exactly sure how the year 2 schedule looks, because let's face it, I live in the moment right now.
Currently, we are finishing up Anatomy and Scientific Foundations of Medicine, which are the two longest classes we have all year (other than OPP and Intro to Clinical Med). Anatomy lab is typically 3 days a week (mandatory attendance) from 9-1130. Foundations is just lectures and attendance is not mandatory. We also have mandatory attendance for OPP (usu. Monday afternoon) and Intro to Clinical Med (Tues afternoon) every week, so in theory if you streamed all the lectures from home, you could spend about 12-15 hours on campus each week in the beginning. Exams for these initial blocks are every 5-6 weeks, although ICM and OPP deviate from that pattern.

After this week, we begin the systems based classes, which are roughly 4 weeks long with tests roughly every two weeks, although again, that varies. Attendance is not mandatory so you could come as little as just Monday and Tuesday afternoons for OPP and ICM. I know that may still be a little unclear so PM me if you have more questions.

Hope that helps!

I was put on pre-interview hold a couple of weeks ago for a less competitive overall application (completed 10/15). I know I'm still in the running, but is there anything I can do at all to get that interview? MU-COM is at the top of my list and I would LOVE for a chance to interview here. Saying that I would be ecstatic would be an understatement 🙂

What day do they typically download LOR?

It varies. If your application is not complete, you will receive an email from MU-COM when letters are added to your application.

P.S. Letters for this week were downloaded today.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question-- your post was really helpful, I really appreciate it! 🙂

I spent some time at MU-COM this week and noticed a few things I hadn't before:
  • The Evans Center has pretty comfy chairs with tables throughout, many of which are equipped with power outlets.
  • They've also got a few charging stations for all your portable devices if you forget your charger at home.
  • The huge glass or tile mosaics in the atrium are very nice.

Several applicants have received IIs after being on hold. Are you retaking the MCAT or were you placed on a nonspecific hold?

I sent in two science professor LOR and a DO LOR. I have a "complete" next to my science LOR and my physician LOR but there is an advisor section marked incomplete and my application is still incomplete. My school does not have a committee and their pre-health advisors refuse to write LOR.

Does that mean one of my letters was not counted or do I have to call to request the 2nd science letter replace the advisor letter?

The exact same thing happened to me, and since we both go to UCF it makes sense. I sent an email explaining the situation and it was fixed immediately the next business day. Not sure if that was a coincidence though, so calling them might elicit the quickest response.

I retook the MCAT this year and got the same score (twice what are the odds). they just said my app was "slightly less competitive but well let you know in a month or less"

Would someone, or MUCOM admission, answer me this question?
If the school opts for holistic review, does that mean that my stats are good enough as of now to be considered for an interview, since I got an interview invite. Does that mean that the decision post-interview will solely be based on our performances at the interview? From what I read from the earlier thread, the decision post-interview are acceptance, alternate list, rejection, hold for MCAT score, or defer for MCAT score. So this mean after the interview, my entire file and stats will also be looked at? The school website states that the school places an emphasis on interview also. So does that mean if I interview well, then my stat would not pose a problem, considering that those stats got me an interview invite?
Thanks a lot. 🙂

I think an interview invite by MU-COM means they think you would succeed academically in medical school. An interview invite is indicative of your success quantitatively. An interview is a qualitative measure to determine if you have the interpersonal skills Marian is looking for. I think the committee then looks at your application in its entirety, and makes a holistic decision based on this information. So stats get you an interview but the combination of stats and interview get you an acceptance.

With regards to the alternate list versus acceptance list. Marian only accepts candidates they deem as most highly admissible. So if you are competitive you still might get put on the alternate list, because you are not most highly admissible at this point in the application cycle.

To answer your question directly, I think the committee places your application on a spectrum relative to other applicants. So low stats could pose a problem even if you interviewed well because everything is relative to other applicants.

Obviously, I am not on the committee but this is what I understand based information I have gathered from Marian.

Thanks for your feedback Wally.
One more question though: I do not think that the school has released the COMLEX passing rate and residency matching yet right because the school has just been established? Maybe next year?
I am just curious to know 🙂

A holistic review is conducted before an initial interview decision. If invited, MU-COM feels you are minimally admissible. The interview assesses non-cognitive skills. The interview is also a disqualifier. MU-COM renders four final decisions post-interview: admit, reject, alternate, or conditional (which is used very rarely). The other decisions you mentioned are pre-interview. Hope this helps.

COMLEX pass and GME placement rates will be posted when available. 2015 will be the first year for Level 1 COMLEX results.
