Wonderingstudent: I’m worried about my interview, and I haven’t heard anything yet. I interviewed 11/20. I really hope this doesn’t mean I’ve been rejected. Congrats though!

Thanks! Stay strong! Even if it doesn’t work out with Midwestern there are other schools and always another cycle. A lot of people have to apply to vet school multiple times to get to where they wanna be! If you have the passion it will happen! Don’t give up

Thank you! I did call them this afternoon and unfortunately I am on the alternate list. I have a feeling it was my interview, as I think my nerves got the best of me. All I can do at this point is try to prepare more for my in state school interview in a few weeks and will hopefully hear back from the other schools I’ve applied to soon. Congrats to those who did get accepted!

Did anyone get a call this week from Midwestern telling them they were accepted? I only got an email

I received an email yesterday that I got accepted! I'm not sure if I received a phone call since I don't pick up random phone numbers. Interviewed 11/20.

Congrats wonderingstudent and st3phni. I got an email today, did not receive a phone call.

I got my alternate list letter in the mail today. Boo. Better luck next time.

I wouldn't give up hope entirely. A lot of people who are accepted outright to Midwestern will decline the offer of a seat in lieu of other schools (generally for affordability and/or location reasons, but not always). Midwestern usually burns through their post-interview waitlist in order to fill the class; you still definitely have good odds of receiving an offer down the line.

I agree with ElkHart, I was an alternate student and I’m here! Actually, quite a few of my classmates were interview waitlisted or alternate students. So there’s still hope!

I'll keep my fingers crossed, gotta plan for the just in case anyway! Appreciate the positivity though! 🙂

Does anyone know if there is anywhere to find previous questions Midwestern has asked for practice?

Thank you Hp48g 🙂. I'm really excited about the acceptance since this was my second round of applications. Also, for all those preparing for Midwestern's interview, I couldn't find any previous questions online when I was scouring the internet. However, from my experience, it really felt like the interviewers were gearing the interview towards my own personal experience. It really did feel like they were just trying to get to know me as a person and I definitely felt less stressed as the interview went on. I say the best preparation would be to go over standard DVM interview questions (i.e. strengths/weaknesses, why do you want to be a vet, etc) and maybe prepare for ethical questions. I wasn't asked any but it wouldn't hurt to prepare just in case one gets asked so you don't get taken by surprise. I wasn't asked any difficult questions but was asked to expand my answers as I gave them so definitely have a good understanding of your experiences. Also, really get to know the program before you interview and why you want to apply there. Go into the interview confident since there's only so much preparation you can do. The confidence will definitely show! Hope this helps and best of luck to everyone!

This is my second time applying and the second time they jumped the gun on “offering an alternative” to waitlisted applicants. The Pharmacy department could at least wait a little closer to the deadline

I was just about to ask if anyone else got this email lol, you beat me to it! This email confused me, I thought I was waitlisted not rejected so the first sentence really confused me.

Flying to Phoenix now! My interview is tomorrow morning! Anyone else?

I got waitlisted both this year and last. I got this same email around February, about three weeks before my official rejection email. They don’t seem to send rejections until all interviews are done and the class is filled, since there’s a small chance you could be taken off the list

This is such a weird way to reject someone.

So is that email technically a rejection or? I’m also waitlisted so I was like what....it’s so random.

same, i was wondering the same thing. its weird
I contacted vet admissions and asked about this. They said people on the interview waitlist will remain there until the cycle is over. So, this email doesn't mean they have been rejected. However, they do not anticipate calling people off the interview waitlist at this point in time which is why the emails were sent out.

I’ve sent this several times to the CVM Deans. The first time I told someone about this they had no idea what I was talking about. I would encourage you to contact admissions and give feedback about receiving this email directly to the school!! You’re not the only ones who have expressed similar feelings (last years thread mentioned it too I believe).

So basically it is an unofficial rejection but they won’t actually admit so as to not upset/annoy people.

Theycould have had the decency to wait until February or March (when people mostly have answers) like last year, rather than December. If they’re going to send premature emails trying to get us to apply to another one of the schools’ programs without officially notifying of rejection, they could at least have a little more decorum about it.

But it’s not a rejection. If you’re on the interview waitlist, then you’ll remain there until the cycle is over if you don’t get pulled off prior to then (and Midwestern does go fairly deep into that waitlist, too, so there’s still a chance for admission); you shouldn’t consider yourself out of the game until you receive an actual, official notice of rejection.

That said, I do agree that the way it is worded is odd and the entire notion behind the email is perhaps a bit inconsiderate, so I understand the complaint.

Midwestern goes deep into the waitlist *post-interview*, not the interview waitlist. The post by Elkhart confirms they do not anticipate offering any more interviews to those who have been waitlisted.

Edit: grammar

Maybe in the past they use to go deep into the interview waitlist but last cycle they ended up taking no one off the waitlist and had too many people enrolled at first. Sorry to be a downer but it's hard to say what will happen this cycle.

Are they finished with interviews? They e-mailed me today asking me to apply to their pharmacy school since my "vet school application didn't go the way I wanted it to"

Sure; with increasing applicant numbers every year, I can see that. But so long as someone is on the interview waitlist, there is still a non-zero chance that they may be offered an interview at a later time. That’s the whole point of the interview waitlist. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said “fairly deep”, but I definitely know people have been offered interviews and subsequent acceptances off of the interview waitlist before.

My real main point, though, is that, IMO, it’s premature to call this email a “rejection”; it is hyperbolic and unnecessarily alarming to other applicants. You are not and should not consider yourself rejected until you receive an official notice as such.

Also to add - one of the administrators mentioned that the committee meets usually after about 3 interview dates, and this was the 3rd. So anyone whose waiting should hear back soon hopefully? They wouldn't give a clear answer if it would be done before the holiday break though lol -- so maybe not haha.

I was told at my interview last week that they will be letting us know prior to December 20th because they don’t want to make us wait until January.

Does Midwestern have a teaching hospital?

Yes, during the afternoon of the interview day everyone is given a tour of the different buildings. They try to give examples of some things that are done at each place (EBC vs CAC) within the buildings as well (rehab vs surgery).

Anyone know if they are committing to Midwestern? How do you feel about the $$$ ?

I am still waiting to hear from seven schools. I don't find that Midwestern is worth the price for my goals if I have other options, but a vet school is a vet school. I'm sure MANY others are in the same boat as I am.

Anyone know when the committee could be meeting / making decisions about the last batch of interviews?

They said they will be meeting this week and letting us know by the 20th, before they go on break.

I feel like this would’ve been a good interview style to follow up with thank you emails. It slipped my mind to do so after Thursday in the midst of everything else. 🙁

I’m wondering if most others sent thank you emails?

By the time I realized that I should do that, it was already 2 weeks after the fact, and by that time I didn't think I would be relevant, or they'd remember specifically who I was.

Honestly I sent thank you emails almost 2 weeks late and I think 5 days later I got in....I don't necessarily think it is a do or die type thing!

I'm in kind of a tough spot with this because I LOVED Midwestern (the people, facilities, etc) when I had my interview, I have lived in Arizona my whole life, and my family is here. I did undergrad in CA and while I loved it there, a big part of me is ready to return to AZ. However, I was also accepted to Oregon and Washington State, and I know they have some of the cheapest tuition you can get, while Midwestern is sooo expensive. It has put me in a really tough spot because I feel like having my family close would be a huge support system while going through vet school and I don't know anyone living in Oregon or Washington.

As someone currently in repayment, unless you have some seriously exceptional reason not to do so, I really urge you to attend the least expensive option you have available. I've heard of people coming out of Midwestern with $400k+ worth of debt once interest and capitalization are all accounted for. That is a ludicrous amount of money to have to pay back. That level of debt can make it exceedingly difficult to ever afford being able to start a family or get approved for a mortgage or car loan in the future. Not to mention the very real psychological toll simply having that amount of debt hanging over your head can have. I attended my (much cheaper) IS vet school for two years and even only being ~$100k in the hole sends me spiraling mentally sometimes, though I have sort of unique circumstances.

I have no doubt that Midwestern is a fine vet school at all and I am sure that they produce great doctors. Hell, I applied and was accepted there myself several years ago, but try to consider your wellbeing for the long-term future. What happens if you fail out? What happens if you have to leave for other reasons? What happens if you graduate and ultimately decide that your first job or vet med as a whole isn't for you? Trying to navigate complex and unforeseen life situations with ~$400k worth of debt is a whole other world from doing so with $100k or even $200k. We all like to think things will pan out perfectly, but that's not guaranteed. Hoo boy, is it not guaranteed...

Anyway, insofar as support systems are concerned, most of your classmates will be in the same boat, honestly. Family won't be able to really relate to what you're going through unless they've been through it themselves and they can surely root you on from further away, too. You'll find and build a new support system along the way. More than that, though, as I tend to say around these parts a lot: vet school itself only lasts four years; the debt lasts much, much longer than that in most cases.
