Hi there, I need some feedback choosing between these schools. I'm OOS

This is what I have so far:

NYMC (pros)
-proximately to NYC

NYMC (cons)
-did not like the area

SUNY Upstate (pros)
-liked the area
-friendly students + staff
-Level 1 trauma center

SUNY Upstate (cons)
-On LCME probation

Since I'm OOS, financially the schools are very similar. If SUNY was not on probation I would choose them in a heartbeat because I really liked the staff and students but alas now I have to really think this through. I would really appreciate any advise anyone has on these two schools that will help me make this decision. Thank you

Probation itself is no reason to have worry about a medical school. In 99% of cases, the school will fix what is needed to be taken off probation.

The reasons behind the initial probation are a different story, and one may (in general) wish to research them. It seems upstate has suffered from a non-cooperative administration in the past (students strongly desiring to change the 4th year course that they ended up "cheating on", leading to half of a graduating class having to remediate). A current upstate student could tell you the current situation with that. I imagine things are cleared up to an extent, I'd 1) follow the money, 2) go where i'd be happier/more likely to succeed. I don't have any personal experience with upstate but I actually thought NYMC was in a beautiful area, and I certainly liked its proximity to NYC.

If you like SUNY, go for it. You will get instate tuition after the first year. I wouldn't worry about the probation.

NYMC also has a Level 1 Trauma center (WMC).

Unfortunately, you no longer get in-state tuition after the first year if you're an OOS. You pay OOS tuition all 4 years..

Also, with the probation issue, my concern isn't that they will lose accreditation as I'm sure as stated above the school will fix the issue. My concern is residency matching.

I would really appreciate any other input. Is the NYMC touro merger cause for concern...say a future name change?

I don't think they will change their name. I think they will keep it like this:

Also, if you like Upstate better than NYMC, I would go for Upstate.

I don't think the probation will have much of an effect on your residency matching.
Just make sure to look at the match lists for both schools.
